Network Announcements
I'm back, back again. (I think I've used this title before.)

Although I have already extricated myself, more or less, from the self-imposed exile discussed here, I have not made an official return, namely because I had nothing to offer upon said return. Now I do.

In the past few hours I have done three things:

1. I have begun a purge policy. Unfortunately for me, I've taken to using the database as my own personal playground/amusement park, despite a limitation of 100 MB or so per database. (And realistically the boards and SS can only use one database.) As usage of SS theoretically continues to expand - as it is wont to do - so too is undeletable database space eaten up. Thus, I must target the boards. My method is as follows: I find a topic that nobody cares about anymore, use the Firefox Scrapbook extension thing to save it, then delete it from the database. Obvious targets thus far have been the Archives, Sticky Topics, Network Announcements, and mod-only boards, but this number will grow to include the DSB, the Social, Site Info, and Polling, as is necessary. My work this morning was largely symbolic, as I only stripped away half a megabyte of data, though this will be the normal pace for a [long] while, as these purges will be relatively nonexistent until there's a pressing need for them. Just be aware that this policy is lurking around, and don't get too attached to any non-"historic", non-SS topics that get moved to the archives.

(Aside: If you want a topic, you can PM me with the general gist of the topic and I'll send you the Scrapbook clip. I will probably release them all at some point, anyway. >_>)

2. I have fixed and enhanced the article system. Sort of. Now articles are not automatically confirmed; editing an article will not automatically rate it among the newest articles (unless it's accepted as part of the edit, of course); and there is now a way to search through the body of articles, which is found under the Title Search link on the home page because I didn't feel like changing the link. Possible additions to this system are as follows: the ability for editors to delete articles from editarticle.php (or at least to hide them); an "average rating for this author" type notice; better searching, including the ability to search fanfic chapters; and some changes to the fanfic system. If you have any other suggestions for me, such as specific changes for the last addition I mentioned, feel free to mention them.

3. I have made new user Moderator activation mandatory. Now we won't be inundated with alts, and if you're banned, you're probably going to stay banned. The downside is of course that we'll have to be vigilant in confirming our one, two new users a month, but I'm sure at least one of our eight Moderators can handle that.

I'm aware of some other horribly annoying problems as well, the nonfunctional usermap issue among the more troubling and urgent of these. Previous to today I believed it was unfixable, but it seemed to work when I was rejecting a test user, so I'm guessing there is a solution here somewhere; I just have to find it.

Lastly, let's all wish Pavel a happy birthday. He's turning 17 today.

I sense cynicism. <_<

Anyway, ^5.

My only suggestion currently isn't really a suggestion at all, but I'd like to see the Fanfics section divided into actual fanfics and original fiction. This isn't necessary at all, but I imagine it would take like 2 minutes to do and look nicer. >_>

I'm so transparent. =(

It won't take 2 minutes to do - I still don't know how the fanfic section works - but it's certainly doable. I could just make another category for original fanfiction.

That's more or less what I meant. >_>
