forside.php

I feel somewhat squeamish making this available to the public in such a crude state; however, I wanted to release something today and this is all I have.

Scum, also known as Jackass, President, Asshole, and various other top-notch monikers, is a trick-taking game, so far as I know, where the goal is to run out of cards first. A more complete set of rules will be posted later; those of you who know how the game works can play now, I suppose, while the rest of you can anxiously await the explanation.

There are some caveats. Players who use IE are unable to access the rudimentary chat because their browser is trash. IEers also have to suffer through some other inconveniences, like having to scroll a lot more. There are numerous bugs. The interface to start and join games is sub-par at best. Find feature creep on the map of design foibles - you'll find this thing at the exact opposite point. In other news, it's also my first full-scale Ajax application thing, made possible once again by the great and powerful Sajax.

To start a game, go to New Game or whatever and start it. Then PM or IM people to join so that you know whether or not anybody else is in it before you go to Start Game and start it. After a game has been started, players should go to forside.php again and it'll redirect you - or you can just go to scum.php yourself. The game starter himself is provided with a link to the latter.

I'll be keeping and updating a list of known bugs and projected updates in this topic. For now, these lists look like this:

Bugs

- If every other player leaves, you should get a screen that tells you to join them. Sometimes you don't.
- When one game ends and another starts there are sometimes some problems cleaning up: hands not displaying, tables not clearing, etc.
- The chat does not stay scrolled down as new messages are posted to it. Unfortunately it turns out that onscroll events in scrollable divs are... difficult. So I decided to cheat instead. New messages are posted at the top of the chat box, which solves the problem.
- You can pass a free turn, thereby confusing the game and probably causing a rift in the universe somewhere. This isn't actually as bad as I initially believed, although it still is quite stupid; however, as a "non-essential" problem, I'm going to class it under interface improvements rather than bugs.
- Validation of straights is completely nonsensical.
- Apparently exiting a game fails to reset some values in the database, so you might find that you aren't able to see the table in the next game.
- Some behavior when a player leaves in a 3+-person game is unpredictable. I can predict the majority of this behavior now.
- Some straights do not validate. This may still be true, but not as far as I know. Oops, forgot to write code to evaluate Aces as low and Jokers might not work e.g. in a flush straight. This isn't a pressing issue (although not being able to use an Ace in a low straight is fail), though, so at the moment, in this version of Scum, I'll just go ahead and declare Aces high.
- The exit "wallpaper" no longer materializes. This should no longer occur.
- Doubtless there are more problems!

Features

- Rules.
- There is currently no tribute system of any kind. Nada. This clearly needs to be remedied.
- Jokers.
- Game settings, including max players, starting hand size, chat height, etc.
- Watching games.
- Joining running games.
- Elimination format.
- A ranking system. Currently unnecessary.
- A nicer play interface. Also unnecessary for a first release.
- A less idiotic, probably Ajax-enabled start-join-manage interface. No Ajax as of now, but it sure looks nice!

Enjoy.

I'll laugh so hard if Fimbulvinter is involved.

I'm tempted to throw it in there for continuity's sake.

I've fixed, to the best of my knowledge, all the bugs I listed. Straight validation is not well-tested, so that might need some more work, while the rest of the bugs were fixed with some caveats (as noted above) or were fixed but might spontaneously degenerate once in a while anyway, as I am incompetent. There may be more problems, of course, and more will be introduced as I now move on to feature creep.

EDIT: I can actually think of one such problem right now. Once feature will be a "max players" setting on new games that will have the game start automatically when the last player possible joins. This potentially introduces a race condition if multiple people join or drop at the same time or if the game creator ends the game in the middle of the process. However, so long as the simultaneously-active population of this site stays at a comfortable 6ish, I don't see this particular bug being a problem.
