| Level: 49 Liberal Arts Major | It's that time of year again, and I figured with all the "Year in Review" specials we're being swamped with this year - more than any other year? you be the judge! - I'd join in on the action and come up with a "Year in Review" especially for this site. You could say 2008 was a banner year for TFN, provided the banner was woven by Satan. The few legitimate bright spots TFN had were completely buried in a vast moor of destitution. To recap: - The year didn't start with the usual New Year's topic on account of the fact that I was being dragged to some miserable Romanian-themed party complete with ensemble of strange and surly Romanians who I didn't know or like and wouldn't be able to recognize anyway because I spent my time actively drinking, entertaining myself by playing solitaire, eating not-very-Romanian food (most of which looked suspiciously awful), and somewhere down the line losing a bunch of money at a variant of poker I rarely play because, again, drunk. This was only a few hours after I wrote a mind-blowingly comprehensive E-mail to Andrea (who else but Andrea?) asking her to come with me if she wanted so we could discuss her ingenius plan to fuck with my head on Christmas Eve with some fucking cookies. Fuck Andrea. But more to the point: this New Year tumbled down the line with nobody really caring, least of all myself. TFN was off to a running start. - At Tiger's insistence, Mobile TFN (m.thefluxnet.org) was pulled from the ether in the middle of January. Somewhere during the year it fell right back in. - The actual New Years announcement came on January 21st and introduced no changes to the administrative structure but added a new feature, the anonymous board. This year we've had two characters - Mister Rogers and Optimus Prime - and the board has seen a grand total of 18 topics and 214 posts (11.89 average posts/topic) all year. Is this a success story? No. It is not. - Seven days later I realized, after some deal of thought, that my sagely prophecy about SS (and site development in general) had really come to pass - that is, I couldn't handle the stress of both high school and writing code/copy for TFN. So I decided to postpone development until May when I graduated and had a lot of time on my hands to... watch old sitcoms on the Internet. - In the middle of February, two things happened. First, I became aware that the nightly-points-boosting I had previously written a workaround for was no longer functioning. I still haven't fixed this, namely because I still don't know why it fails and I'm too lazy to figure it out. The second thing I realized was that TFN was getting a number of weird errors. Just as I predicted, these went away on their own. I wouldn't be surprised if these two events were in some way connected. - TFN's reinstatement anniversary came and went with nobody noticing. - I got rejected from Stanford in mid-April (it's always the middle with you people!) and ended up stranded at Boise State University after it turned out I was too poor to go to the University of Washington for my freshman year. This is only important because of this topic, where Tiger claims his fetish for replacing actual words with numbers will end while he's at college. In fact now he's decided to expand his idiotic system to encompass not just the girls his incompetence has driven away but also all his male pseudo-friends, other acquaintances, every day words, etc. This isn't immediately relevant to TFN but, seriously, what the fuck? - Somewhere during what I'm going to say is May I had my annual bitch fit and considered closing TFN because the site's trademark feature, it's barenness, was beginning to grow tiresome. This is somewhat confusing given that I adamantly avoid advertising TFN or even acknowledging its existence on account of its lack of... well, its lack of any other features, so I really should expect, perhaps welcome, the barenness - but again, bitch fit. During said bitch fit I decided it'd be a mighty swell idea to give everybody administrator privileges, forgetting of course that ns was very careful to make his password hunter2. TFN was subsequently "hacked", by which I mean someone logged into ns's account and started deleting boards left and right before some wary administrator, either Scorp or xp, banned "ns". I decided to take advantage of my no longer being a slave to the public school system to shut the site down for a week, restore the boards and messages using a slightly outdated backup file, and do some other stuff while I was at it. The site came back May 30th. The original bitch fit topic was, as far as I can tell, deleted when I restored everything, but here's the first topic made when the site came back up. - In June, my masturbatory lust for site development took the form of a few fixes then petered out and died by the time July rolled around, when I decided, what the heck, I'd bring back SS after shutting it down during my bitch fit. It continues to gnaw on my sanity. - Also in June, my cat died. - In August, I decided to follow up on an ancient project, namely my circa-2006 effort to import the card game Scum to TFN using Sajax. This was going great until I got to the finishing touches stage somewhere in October and the server, in its infinite cruelty, decided to murder my glorious project in cold blood. (In other words, the program overwhelmed the server and stopped working for some but not all users, suddenly and without warning.) This really put a damper on my plans to lift TFN out of suckdom. - September 2nd marked one year since the last update for SS was released. - Election Day in November saw Barack Obama ascend to the position of Emperor of the Universe. Despite TFN's strong support, Cthulhu was once again defeated. CTHULHU FHTAGN - Speaking of significant days in the United States, Pearl Harbor Day was on the right day this year. Put that in your pipe and smoke it! - On December 27th I spontaneously decided to replace TFN's old HitGodFist favicon with something hideous of my own creation. The next day I received word that my submission to lewrockwell.com had been rejected because it was unsuitable for the site. Its subsequent posting on TFN brought about the most activity the actual TFN part of the site had seen in several months, most of which was spent feeding a very bad troll. (You expected a link to Tiger's profile, didn't you?) The troll was then banned and TFN resumed the business of being dead. Are these two events related? No. - The year drew to a close without further incident. Yes, 2008 was for TFN the suffocating darkness of Hell. So it makes perfect sense to enter 2009 with no alterations whatsoever to either the site itself or the administrative staff. As for TFN's prospects, well, assuming I won't have another bitch fit (this won't happen) and I successfully fulfill my New Year's resolution (this won't happen), maybe we'll get somewhere. Exactly where that somewhere will be is another question entirely. |

That would require activity and work. The only two words that should be banned on TFN. It's funny, I was going to say something like "Hey, I have power! let's do this" and go into the Control Panel and ban the words activity and work, but then it turns out Editors can't access that part of the CP, and either I forgot what to change the URL to to access it or that exploit was fixed at some point. >_> So, sorry, no dice. --- "I'm not perverted!
