Dear members of our internet forum,

As we mark another year of our community's existence, I cannot help but feel grateful for the camaraderie and connection that has been fostered here over the past 19 years. While our forum may not be the biggest or most active, it has undoubtedly been a place of refuge and belonging for many of us.

As the administrator of this forum, I want to extend my sincerest gratitude to each and every member who has contributed to its growth and success over the years. Whether you have been here since the beginning or just recently joined, your presence and participation have made a difference.

While we may not have the same level of activity as we once did, I firmly believe that our community still has value and relevance in today's internet landscape. We continue to provide a safe and welcoming space for those who share common interests and experiences.

As we look to the future, I am excited to see what new conversations and connections will be forged here. I am committed to ensuring that this forum remains a place where everyone feels heard and respected, and where we can continue to learn and grow together.

Thank you for being a part of this journey with us, and here's to another year of our forum's existence.

Sincerely,

[Your name]

I had not realized it was really the 19th year of TFN. I also hadn't realized I really have been here basically from the start.

It's not actually 19 years old because there was a stretch where it was even more defunct than it is now; it's only been continually active since its reinstatement in 2006 (whose anniversary is marked by this post), which is a mere 17 years. However, our oldest accounts were registered in 2004 (or at least mine was), so at least some database entries are 19 years old.

I should add that I don't really remember much about the early history of the site and reading old posts I wrote makes me want to switch fields to physics so I can invent a time machine and go back and punch myself in the face, so I'm a little unclear on what drama occurred between 2004 and 2006 that led to the website going down and apparently also me losing the .com version of the domain name for a while.

Well yes, I do remember the defunct period but I was here in 2004 as well.

Wasn't that the whole Gensou merger and stuff with ns stemming from that around that time period? Seems like it matches up to my memory. I haven't thought about any of that in forever.

Oh right, Gensou! I remember that name. I don't remember anything else about it but I assume it sucked enormously.

The Wayback Machine would mostly confirm that assumption. There's a lot to digest from this snapshot. There's a thread in there asking whether they're still with "the flux" but Wayback didn't archive it. There's also apparently a topic called "The following users will be banned: ka24, ns1987, ka25, EpsilonX" which is supplemented by an announcement claiming "Four people got banned for calling Nick a homo," suggesting a deeper origin for the famous TFN/Gensou split. I don't remember who Nick was but I assume he was not a homo and was very sensitive about it. The current poll is "Coffee or masturbate?" which is probably worse than any poll on TFN that wasn't made specifically by Tiger. The board appears to have at least one feature that TFN doesn't, which is that recently-updated topics such as the "ns1987 is banned" topic are highlighted on the board list, except the link to that topic is broken (not unarchived by Wayback, just broken) so I don't think it worked very well.

A few months later, still in 2004, their social board had a post by user Dark entitled "I say THE FLUX is dead," but the topic was not archived so I can't confirm the contents. In any case, joke's on you, user Dark! Also, user Don appears to have died(?).

Tiger requests account confirmation in an unarchived 3/05 topic, and by that point a bunch of current and former TFNers like Burgess, EpsilonX (apparently not banned!), and our very own Scorpion 316 have various (unarchived) posts on their social board. SomeRandomGuy also might have been a TFNer. It would be very funny if that's me. There's a random Terry Schiavo callout. You guys remember Terry Schiavo?

The first snapshot that demonstrates an overt TFN-Gensou merger is the last snapshot before the domain expired. Unfortunately Wayback does not appear to have a current-as-of-this-date snapshot of the social board, because it's just got the previous one I linked to. Notable here is that Tiger thought it was a good idea to use his actual name for his personal board there. Tiger is now a roboticist so perhaps he can send a robot back in time to punch us both in the face.

I was indeed over at Gensou at one point during the merger fiasco. I remember there being a lot of funny posts at the time of how terrible the whole idea was because it was in fact, quite bad. I also had almost forgotten Terry Schiavo until I read the name and now I'm reminded of a large amount of dark humor things.

Nick was the admin of Gensou if I'm not mistaken and the main point of contention here was ns favoring Gensou in the merger pretty hard.

Also, if you search Network Announcements with the word Gensou you'll find some posts from here about it. Mostly Kenri and ns. But you can also find stuff in TFN Social.

EDIT: I especially like this post I found from 2011 in TFN Social.

2011 me had some strong feelings about this Gensou detour. It is very funny that 2023 me doesn't remember any of it. However, I think 2011 me may be wrong on the Adsense point: I think that got nuked when I let Tiger put it on another website and we got banned for click farming or something. In any case, TFN sucks and would have lost Adsense support eventually anyway.

Fun fact: I met my future wife a little less than a month after making that post. I remember one of those things much more clearly!

EDIT: No, I had the Adsense story right in 2011, it was just elsewhere in the topic.

This topic is also illustrative. Burgess really laying the smackdown on EpsilonX reveals a dynamic I had forgotten. Nick's last login here was in 2011.

That is indeed a fun fact. I do think that was around the time you lost Adsense though when the merger shenanigans went on so it could be either or.

Scrolling through the TFN Social posts about this subject made me come across the fact I used the same password here as I did on Gensou and had my account here hacked by Nick at some point which I don't recall. That's actually hilarious. There's a good bit of funny out of context posts.

EDIT: I miss Burgess.

Haven't seen him since 2010. I imagine he got tired of Tiger and/or myself being idiots and hit the road.

Kenri's last login was apparently four months ago. Weird! xp1337's was in 2017.

I know Burgess became a mod on GameFAQs for a while. I never heard from him after that.

I have noticed Kenri pop around from time to time every few months to lurk though.

Tiger here with the one-hit KO against me. That's right, I'm in my 30s and I'm still paying for this domain name!

I know Burgess became a mod on GameFAQs for a while. I never heard from him after that.

This is also the last thing I remember about him. By that time I wasn't using GameFAQs anymore though.

The only other thing I'm taking from reading that particular thread is the fact I miss Summoner's Seal every time it gets mentioned.

I also forgot about the ns' account logging in and deleting the boards fiasco. That was funny too.

;_;

I think I might give it some attention after I finish my dissertation, which could also be never at my current rate. Incidentally, one of the (many) reasons I got into linguistics was that I couldn't figure out how to implement a system to translate plain text descriptions of what spells etc. do into game implementations, so I wanted to look into that more, although ultimately I went away from that in my research and in the intervening decade machine learning techniques have come from behind with a steel chair to accomplish similar tasks through brute force statistical analysis better than linguists have ever managed through symbolic reasoning. I don't think this site's hosting package can handle the computing requirements of any serious AI stuff, however.

I also forgot about the ns' account logging in and deleting the boards fiasco. That was funny too.

Funny in retrospect! I don't recall thinking it was funny at the time.

I miss that too, I didn't get too far but it was an interesting game.

Lets be real, that last bit can be left off.

Nah, it was kinda funny at the time too.
IIRC I noticed and stopped him from going further or something?

Wow I feel seen! I wish I could claim I was checking in to see if the site has magically revived but it's actually just because there's a lot of my writing here that I occasionally want to reread/reference but have never saved to my computer.
