It's for having little weasels like Glenn Beck whom say things such as "I think it's obvious that Obama has a deep seated hatred for white culture" and then refuse to back up or explain what they mean by this. It's for putting a WAR CRIMINAL on their payroll.
They're a media outlet that is more interested in riling up their base and feeding them the sort of bullshit they want to hear than actually objectively portraying the news, all the while complaining about dat dere "liberal media" while the supposed liberal media fails to call them out on this bullshit.
I mean if Fox News is your thing, than I don't really care, but the Whitehouse is more than justified in calling them out.

I don't watch TV news (except for the ever-hilarious financial news), so I don't know much about Fox News compared to other channels. I also haven't been following politics lately so I don't know what shenanigans these folks have been up to recently.
I will say however that the White House press team "calling out" news organizations, however blatant the propaganda, on political matters demonstrates a great lack of decorum. If, for instance, Fox News were spreading some jive about an impending natural disaster, yes, the White House may feel compelled to issue a facepalm, in which case they are acting well within their prerogative. Denouncing fictive political accusations, however, breaks whatever veil of benevolent political indifference the executive branch is supposed to possess. The key difference is that one action exercises vested authority for the benefit of others, whereas the other does so for the benefit of oneself.
Will this statement convince Fox News fans that they're consuming baseless drivel? No. Will this statement convince Fox News detractors that Fox News sucks? No, they already think it does. Will this statement shift the opinion of anyone who, like me, doesn't give a shit about the legitimacy of Fox News? No, because we don't give a shit. Will this statement affect the disposition of an arbitrary minority of people concerned about whether or not Fox News is terrible but too stupid to make up their own minds using what resources are presently available? Maybe. Depends on just how stupid they are. There isn't much substance here.
Ultimately, the move is a politically-motivated jab at the Republican Party, not a public service, and anyone who approves clearly views the supposed role of the executive branch much differently than I do.

Those are legitamite reasons to be upset about this move by the white house. My main point was that the drivel Fox News pumps out can hardly be called objective news, or even actual news half the time due to the pure amount of misinformation they spread. DF's original point was that this was purely because they do not throw support behind Obama and I was responding by pointing out there is a plethora of reasons to claim Fox News is not a legitimate news source and the Whitehouse's statement is justified in that regard.
Whether it was goodform or even something the Whitehouse should be doing with is of course up to debate, and I do agree with you that the executive branch should probably keep their nose out of these matters.

This is true, in which case I agree with your comments.
The White House is far from the source of the claim that Fox News is illegitimate; Fox has been labeled a joke news station for years now, from everybody on every part of the political spectrum. The fact that the network doesn't actively support the Obama administration is not the motivation for this statement. A multitude of news sources do not support Obama - Fox News is not the sole resister in a sea of brainwashed zombies some people seem to think it is.
Fox News is simply terrible, and has been for a while.
