Level: 49 Liberal Arts Major	A couple semesters ago I taught the world's most poorly defined ESL class, where students were supposed to learn about culture while improving their listening and oral presentation skills. Needless to say, none of that happened. I had a series of weekly assignments where my students had to listen to a (somewhat) classic English song and answer a few questions about it. The questions I wrote turned out to be rather extremely insanely difficult, but the rest of the assignment turned out well, maybe. I also had a "vocabulary journal" assignment wherein every week students had to write an entry using a new word, including a bunch of irrelevant details nobody cared about in each entry, and ultimately that was nothing more than a huge bother. I'm teaching that class again over the summer and I figured I might combine these two assignments and have them listen to a song, then choose one-three words from the lyrics and do something with them. I want the songs to be both somewhat notable and to either deal with cultural issues (in this poll, the Sound of Silence, the Visitors, and In the Ghetto) or have some interesting structural quirks (here, All Along the Watchtower). Level: 49 Liberal Arts Major	They used to randomly show the music video on the Disney Channel when the song had just come out, and at that point in time I watched the Disney Channel, so that was how I was first exposed to it. Back then I thought it was kind of neat.
