Tetris A Type - Tetris
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4ufp4ll-E_E

I never really got addicted to Tetris as other people. I can't stay that hooked on a game when it has no plotline or characters to attach to (first person who says L block is an intriguing character gets blasted with a firework). It's definitely fun, just not something I can play for long. But this music is darn catchy.

Tetris A Type - Super Smash Brothers Brawl
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tapzwyMgziE

I like this remix a bit more than the original due to how dramatic it sounds, but it probably has a lot to do with me not being hooked on the game as a child. No nostalgia to incredibly blind me. Oh well, they're both good.

Okay that surprised me, why did you listen to that one?

The same reason I listened to Zero Two. There's a video game music contest going on and it came up over there.

Sonic & Knuckles - Flying Battery Zone Act 1
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iXxaNDJkaT8&fmt=18

While in every other case I generally treat Sonic 3 & Knuckles as a single game, here I won't completely arbitrarily. This is probably my favorite Genesis Sonic Song. Although, there's a kind of 4-way tie for that... and they all happen to be from S3&K (with 3 on the S&K side.)

Flying Battery Zone is also probably my favorite zone from the Genesis Sonic games, it's just so awesome in both acts. Other zones can sometimes have a single act as awesome as Flying Battery, but having both that good is a lot more rare.

Took at some old SNES classical music that i recall that i found awesome.

Contra 3:Alien Wars ~ The Final Gauntlet
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4OfDecPgx-E&feature=PlayList&p=A9C41310127B5AF3&playnext_from=PL&playnext=1&index=19

Four bosses, each one of them with a awesome theme. After you kill one, the track switches to match the next boss's theme, and each one gets more exciting as it moves on. very awesome.

Combatribes - The Slaughter Troops/M. Blaster
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n94RR490tuo&feature=related

Couldn't find one with separate tracks. A old classic game called the combatribes where three dudes beat the crap out of everyone to rescue a girl. The first soundtrack is basically where the Combatribes gotta go fight the last boss, but in traditional cliche style, you gotta fight the Slaughter troops ~ who are basically the first four bosses each guarding a tower floor up to the last boss, who is M. Blaster. A Robotic Army Soldier who can open up his chest and fire a cannon o_O

Yoshi's Island ~ Big Boss fight
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fMSKYa71pMk

I loved the bosses in this game. this music made it even more fun.

Super Metroid ~ Red Soil
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FyFcSHHdIQE

and

Super Metroid ~ First series of bosses
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gy1MZpv3L8U

I know someone mentioned it earlier, but here's some soundtracks to one of my childhood favourites as well from Super Metroid.

Chrono Trigger ~ Battle with Magus
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UbbLN_GRSNI

Magus! :O
It so feels like a duel, despite it being 3 Vs. 1.

7th Saga ~ Dungeon Theme
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DwFdHwdGE60

God, was 7th SAga TERRIBLY hard... especially the dungeons... but the music was noteworthy for making you feel like not to let your guard down one bit at the same time.

7th Saga ~ Boss Theme
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x_i3-f_smXU&feature=related

But that was only the saving grace... for the boss music ;_;

~~~
And now, for something unusual. I'm not sure if anyone remembers RAgnarok, one of the more popular MMORPGs in it's earlier haydays? WEll, some of the OST was online and here's some noteworthy tunes i found:
Labyrynth
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vjMVg57VfNs
Peaceful Forest
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LBgGsuNRIqo&feature=related
Morroc
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=izZduA_x6ME&feature=related
Aeon (The Clock Tower)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GTAH_m3hT4E&feature=related
By the way, it came to my attention also that FFVII - OneWinged Angel was posted. <_<
I *was* going to post Battle With Magus eventually, but I guess that's out now. I'll have to play Chrono Trigger for a different one.
As for Dancing Mad, eh. I'm more familiar with the Black Mage remix than the actual piece, though that should change whenever I beat FFVI. ...Whenever that is.
Love-Colored Master Spark - Touhou Project: Imperishable Night
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4ssmxWJftyo
When I first started to learn about Touhou, I wasn't sure what to think of Marisa. As I've continued to study it, I've found myself growing more and more fond of her. Now she's one of the characters I'm anticipating the most for learning about.
I'm not very familiar with the Imperishable Night soundtrack. It's good, like all Touhou music is, but I've listened to Embodiment of Scarlet Devil, Perfect Cherry Blossom, and Mountain of Faith a lot more than Imperishable Night (those are the only four I've heard so far). This is one of the only pieces I can recognize and name immediately, mainly because of its connection with Marisa. It kind of feels nostalgic for some reason. Not sure why that is, since it was nowhere near one of the first Touhou pieces I heard...
Burning Force (Silver Forest Remix) - Touhou Project: Imperishable Night
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=koYzA2Paej0
This is probably my third favorite song on the Silver Forest soundtrack I've listened to, after Keep the Faith and Sweet Little Sister. People seem to have varying mileage on it though. A lot of them don't really care for it. I'm not sure why. My only complaint is I feel the song gets cut off one stanza too soon. Feels a bit shortened. Oh well, what is there is nice.
Mass Effect 2 - Afterlife
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cHu5JUSuVGQ&fmt=18
I'm not actually sure if this song has an official title in Mass Effect 2, but well, it plays in Afterlife (well, the upper section of it), so yeah, I'm going with that. When I first entered there (and this is very early in the game) I didn't want to leave, because this music is just so good. And any time I was on that planet for any reason, I'd make a point to go through Afterlife even if it was out of the way just to hear this song some more. So awesome.
This is a good song.
Glad you think so. =D
Fighting of the Spirit - Tales of Phantasia
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OZ7FW4lzR5s
Sadly, all I've gotten to play of Tales of Phantasia is some of the Gameboy Advance ports. It's better than nothing though, even with the incredibly bad battle voices. I didn't get very far so I'm not too familiar with most of the tunes. I did like this one though. Very catchy battle theme.
Of course, on this board, probably more people are familiar with...
Fighting of the Spirit - Tales of Symphonia
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UxtPCpPUCdw&feature=related
I played Tales of Symphonia first and therefore heard this one before the original. Despite that, I think I prefer the original to it. Go figure. Both are good though.
If the sequel has this piece, I couldn't find it with a simple search on Youtube and I did not want to pry further due to fear of spoilers, so there you go.
And I am going to Spain tomorrow so no new posts until... July 18th I believe.
Not much I can say about this without spoilers, but it takes place in a village without shops and barely any NPCs, yet is the most memorable location in the game.
Weapon Raid - Final Fantasy VII
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3Sb9ToVRU3Q
I think I'm the only person to actually really like this piece. There's better FFVII tracks certainly, but they get proper respect from the masses. This one is almost never mentioned.
Weapon Raid plays during most scenes with the Weapons, IIRC, but the one that sticks out in my mind is the first time encountering Ultima Weapon. When I was playing my first time (at a far younger age!), I actually stopped on a dialogue box to listen to this track for a while. It really sticks to my mind after hearing it.
Staff Credits - Star Fox 64
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YEbX2acWUKQ
To me, this piece has always felt sort of out of place in Star Fox 64. It always seemed more like classical music than normal VG music, what with the different movements and all. It's the kind of thing that would work perfectly at the end of a movie, but less so in a video game. Listening to it now, though, I can kind of connect the dots and realize that, hey, Star Fox 64's entire premise is pretty much parodying movies, so I guess it makes sense that it would have something like this play during the game's ending.
Normally I might add something here about what part of the piece I like the most (if you want to know a secret, I usually just do this as padding <_<), but in this case, while there are parts I definitely like more than others, I think the entire appeal of the piece comes in it constantly changing and contrasting with itself. So there.
Checker Knights - Kirby Air Ride
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qkosFvX0m4o
I have never played Kirby Air Ride. I first heard this track in Super Smash Brothers Brawl. However, it was not a remix, and even if it was, I would have to give proper credit to the game which first had it.
I don't know the context of this piece, but Kirby Air Ride is a racing game, and this definitely fits that mindframe. The clopping sound is a nice touch, but I most like the horns. It's very energetic and a blast to listen to. If all Kirby Air Ride music is this nice, I may have to try finding the soundtrack.
Maximum Carnage: Opening Intro
Remember that game that came out with this red cartridge? Yeah. that game. this is the SNES and Genesis version. both awesome.
Doom - Suspense
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TLJr-zObCMo
I forgot about this gem. despite the simplistic story of the game, the game plays this song during the second last chapter to get you hyped up. you fight alot of shit with this 'suspenseful' song playing as you near the final boss.
Azure Dream - the 4th floor
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HmLET_YQgtg
one thing i loved about Azure Dreams was the fact that the game's music got more suspenseful as you go up floors. the game was shit hard when you got close to the 100th floor, but when you got to the 80th floor, songs like this started playing, making it feel like pushing you further and further >_<
Mysterial's Theme - Pokemon Battle Revolution
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F33plyQtcAs
Pokemon Battle Revolution is one of those games that's a piece of garbage for single player but enjoyable for multiplayer. It has the ability to connect to opponents randomly, which can make for some interesting matches you would not get otherwise. Using Pokemon transferred from Diamond, Pearl, and Platinum (maybe Heart Gold and Soul Silver work, not sure on that) is the way to go, and it has pretty good graphics for a Pokemon game in 3D.
There are ten colosseums, each with its own theme. Most of them are pretty good, with only one being outright dislikable in my book. I especially like Magma Colosseum, Gateway Colosseum, and Neon Colosseum. But the others are good too.
There are a handful of boss themes as well that only play during single player mode. This one plays during the battle with the 'master' of the world you are in. No real story behind it, but he has a sazzy hat. His is my favorite in the game because of how incredibly epic it sounds. Far more epic than a game like this deserves, IMO, but that doesn't make it any less awesome.
Well, I won't be back until July 24th due to the salmon run, so here's another hiatus for me. I'll at least return much sooner!
I said I'd have two, but today's Tuesday, so I actually needed three. But then I decided to do five. Except, not really, but there are five links, at least!
Heal - ICO
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T9ErwNCbYEQ
I've seen this called both "Heal" and "Save Progress", the former of which is probably the official name and the latter the unofficial one. Because no healing happens in ICO, so that name doesn't make much sense. <_< Anyway, it's weird to say that a track that only plays when you save your game works better in context, but... I'm going to try to explain why I think that.
The vast, vast majority of ICO has no music at all, instead using ambient sounds. The vast majority of ICO's world is also dangerous: for Ico, who is the one exploring the areas, because one misstep can mean a fatal fall, but especially for Yorda, who, if left alone, could be dragged off by a shadowdemon at any moment. Let me tell you, leaving Yorda somewhere out of sight is the most horrible feeling in the world (or at least in any game I've ever played). And the game, of course, makes you do it. A lot. So when you find one of the save couches strewn about the world (yes, you save by sitting on couches - I don't get it either), Ico and Yorda sit down and real music starts to play, and you know they're safe for the moment... It's just a fantastic feeling. The piece itself is sort of unremarkable, but the moment just makes it.
(Also, Ico and Yorda sitting on the couch is the cutest thing ever. Just look at them. :3)
Together, We Ride - Fire Emblem 7
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yERQqvP0598
The track that defines Fire Emblem to me. This plays when you recruit a new character, and considering that the huge and constantly expanding cast of playable characters is one of the reasons I like Fire Emblem, obviously this theme would be one of the ones most memorable to me. Together, We Ride is a very powerful theme, which is appropriate, because there aren't many moments in Fire Emblem where you feel more powerful than after turning what is no doubt one of the strongest units on your enemy's side to your side in a single action.
Hyrule Temple: Fire Emblem - Super Smash Bros. Melee
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jZYnntV85ak
...On the other hand, it doesn't work so well in Smash Bros. When I play on Temple, which is far more often than I'd like, I always prefer the actual Temple music. This is not a condemnation of Melee's remix of TWR, which is actually pretty great; I just feel it's out of place. Now, if it played after recruiting a character in Brawl's SSE, that might work better - but like hell am I going to replay SSE just to see if they did that.
Fire Emblem - Smashing... Live!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yQQVSElo2hw
I think it was Nintendo Power that was kind enough to send me the Smashing Live CD. The CD contained "15 Melee Classics" played by a live orchestra, including this, which is my absolute favorite version of Together, We Ride.
(And yes, I think both this and the last one are half TWR, half FE Main Theme, but whatever.)
Together, We Ride - Fire Emblem 1
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9xlMErV9Fts&fmt=18
Chiptunes and I have a sort of love/hate relationship (you'll note that I haven't posted very many of them). I definitely like this one, though, especially as a contrast to the orchestrated version. Goes to show that what makes TWR so appealing, to me at least, aren't any bells and whistles that might be attached, but the tune itself, no matter how simple.
Route 47/48 - Pokemon HeartGold/SoulSilver
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YbNA8pjFZ9I
An absolutely beautiful piece that plays during one of the new areas added to HG/SS. It was quickly noticed by everyone and overrated to all hell. But still, it's quite pretty, even if it does a couple things I don't like. (Sorry, I'm sort of in the mood to complain right now, and you'll just have to deal with it. >_>)
First of all, the place this plays is, if I recall correctly, a high, mountainous path over waterfalls. This piece really doesn't fit that location at all. This really needs to play in a windswept meadow or something and let the high mountain path have something more dramatic. Second, that snoring noise at :53 and 2:02. What the hell is that, and why is it in this, and why can't I get rid of it. It doesn't seem like much but it almost ruins the entire track for me. I'm not even kidding.
Castle in the Mist - ICO
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X_PszodM17s&fmt=18
Sorry about another ICO song so soon, but there are two reasons for this. 1) I have a headache right now, so I just went with whatever would let me get this done the fastest. And 2) my memory of games fades incredibly quickly, especially regarding music, so I pretty much have to strike while the iron is hot.
This plays during one of the game's opening sequences, if you linger on the start screen for too long. I think there are at least two, so you might have to keep trying to get this one. I don't think it plays anywhere else in the game, but I could be wrong.
This is probably my second favorite track from ICO. (No, Heal isn't #1 - I haven't posted my #1 yet. So, yes, there is at least one more of these coming.) I love how simple this piece is - it sounds like something that you might hear a guy on the street playing. I'm not sure how well it works with ICO's setting - my mental imagery for this piece immediately goes to the American southwest - but I'm willing to cut it a little slack in that department because it plays during the game's OP and not the game itself.
Floater Land (Buoy Base Galaxy) - Super Mario Galaxy
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lQrQtLPccZw&fmt=18
The track that cemented Super Mario Galaxy's soundtrack's place among the greatest VG soundtracks ever made in my mind. I mean, probably 90% of SMG's soundtrack is incredible, but this track even manages to blow the rest of that 90% away. Not just my favorite track in SMG, but definitely one of my favorite musical compositions ever.
This plays during Mario's assault on/climb to the top of Buoy Base Galaxy, which is also one of the better galaxies in SMG. The level itself, and Mario's conquering of it, is noticeably more epic (and I use this in its non-slang sense, that is: heroic; majestic; impressively great) than the traditional Mario stages; Buoy Base Galaxy is probably unmatched in that regard until Super Mario Galaxy 2, in fact. And a large part of it is the music, which sets the stage perfectly. When this plays, you feel completely invincible; it's the kind of track that you might find playing when a lone hero is about to rout an opposing army singlehandedly. I enjoyed Twilight Princess' soundtrack, but the next Zelda game really needs to take a page from SMG's book and have more tracks like this.
Give me ICO. >=( I've been looking everywhere for it. ;_;
I actually got home a day early but the internet wasn't working, typically. So back on track...
*WARNING: If you plan on playing this game, don't look at the related videos because they have spoilers.*
Exceeding Love - Suikoden III
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8YmQoREyleE
The only game from the Suikoden series I have played is number three. I hear it's one of the worse ones. If so, then the series is down-right amazing, because I loved it. Having three (four technically but the fourth has side chapters) main characters with intertwining stories is awesome. It continues off one and two, but despite that, I felt right at home just starting with three.
This opening is one of the best in any game I've played. Beautifully drawn scenes, shows important flashes of story pieces without spoiling, lots of characters get the spotlight, and the music is fantastic. I love this piece. Though I linked to the opening video, listening to the music alone is something I do often. It's my favorite piece in the game.
Yeah, this is a good song.
Floater Land (Buoy Base Galaxy) - Super Mario Galaxy
Oh, this will be fun. >_>
...Well then.
I mean, probably 90% of SMG's soundtrack is incredible, but this track even manages to blow the rest of that 90% away.
So, a 6/10 - maybe 6.5/10 song is blowing away the rest of the soundtrack? >_>
but the next Zelda game really needs to take a page from SMG's book and have more tracks like this.
Oh god no. If I imagining this playing in OoT/MM/TP I become very scared, because that's a disaster. >_>
So, a 6/10 - maybe 6.5/10 song is blowing away the rest of the soundtrack? >_>
your nines are upside down, bro.
Oh god no. If I imagining this playing in OoT/MM/TP I become very scared, because that's a disaster. >_>
I said like Floater Land, not Floater Land specifically. <_<
Believe In Myself (Tails' Theme) - Sonic Adventure
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3DTjw_SXB8Q
I wanna be strong, I really wanna be trusted...
I'm really not even sure why I like this one. I have no memories of it from the game itself, the lyrics are sorta dumb, and the chorus is awful. I just enjoy listening to it... though I liked it a lot more before I knew the lyrics. I think I'd really prefer a karaoke version, but whatever. My favorite part may be the first 15 seconds, actually.
Since I can't talk about the game I might as well talk about the character! I like Tails. I know a lot of people don't, but I actually do. Not so much after he started talking, but back when he was just a little fox who could completely break the game by flying in games not meant for flight? That was great.
Melty Monster Galaxy - Super Mario Galaxy 2
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=stLwU5745yU
"Wait what I thought you didn't play-"
Yeah, yeah, I don't play many Mario games and it's rare for me to listen to its music. The only Galaxy music I heard before this was when Kenri shared Floater Land, which is okay but not something I was going nuts over. I happened to hear this piece yesterday when checking out a Pokemon video that used this as the background.
As inferred by some of my previous posts, I like horns quite a bit. This track has them as a main portion. The piece as a whole has a really epic feeling to it. Its energetic nature makes me appreciate its place in a fire world (that or the name is really messing with me). I can't say how well it works in the game but as an outside listener, I think it's pretty nice.
Is that a shot? Because my posts are never late. They are, however, frequently six days early. <_<
Menu Select Theme - Metroid Prime
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k0_-BkhG9Sw
This track IS Metroid Prime to me. I think that it's generally overshadowed by the Title Theme, though I always get those two mixed up, so maybe I'm wrong and this is the one everyone likes? But regardless. Metroid Prime has an incredible soundtrack, and while this isn't its best track, it's definitely one of my favorites, and, like I said, the one track I most strongly associate with Metroid Prime. Like, I really want to play Metroid Prime right now, from having listened to this. (Though that happens every time I listen to any of its music, really... but now especially.)
Normally, I hate non-music sound effects in music (if that makes sense), but for some reason I really like the weird static effects in this piece. It just works here, and it's not overused, which is nice - if it was present throughout the whole song (and loud enough to draw attention to itself), I probably would dislike it, and dislike the track as a result.
The Detective That Came From The Wild West - Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dne7tQB1DC8
This is probably my favorite character theme from the Ace Attorney series, though I could be forgetting a few I like more. It really captures the western feeling that Jake Marshall is supposed to convey, even if he is a phony and it's played frequently for laughs. I always caught myself humming along to this one. Wish Jake would show up again, but he seems to have been dropped off the face of the earth along with all the other characters that were newly introduced in the fifth case. Besides Ema. For whatever purpose.
Radiant Life Fostering Light - Tales of Vesperia
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7HvfE9DL8Os
(yeah, I know the video says "Brilliant Life, Rising Light". I'm going by what the game says, which is, IIRC, Radiant Life Fostering Light, and no, that name doesn't make any goddamn sense, but I'm pretty sure that's what it is, and if not I'll edit this at some point)
This is the... much conversed about already BGM for Egothor Forest in Tales of Vesperia. Egothor Forest is, oddly enough, probably one of the least important/noteworthy areas in the entire game, but it lucked into having my favorite dungeon theme. Maybe because it was such an unnoteworthy area that they just went with the first track that kinda-sorta fit it, and it actually worked out in their favor? I dunno. I certainly don't hear this track and think, "oh yeah, that should be playing in a forest".
In fact, funny story (well, to the extent that anything I preface with "funny story" is actually a funny story): one night I had RLFL stuck in my head, and it was driving me crazy because I couldn't remember its name or what game it was from, and I was POSITIVE it was from some beach area. So I was basically listening to every single beach-related track I could think of (including nearly the entire Super Mario Sunshine soundtrack) trying to find this. I, of course, did not, though I managed to expand my future material a bit, so it wasn't a complete waste. And then I remembered that it was from Vesperia like three hours later. Yep. Moral of the story: if I ever own a beach house, I'm just going to have RLFL playing nonstop, at my beach house, and it'll be awesome.
June Mermaid - Xenogears
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nl2phFAktbM
I'm sure I mentioned this before, but here it is again. Xenogears is probably my overall favorite soundtrack for one good reason: I like all the music on it. No other track has been able to claim that so far. Though if xp's right, Xenosaga III might change that.
Despite that, I found it easy to pick June Mermaid for posting. It is such a moving piece and it plays for one of my favorite characters (Emeralda). Though she can fit the mold of cheerful child at times, her backstory makes this tragically beautiful piece fit her. I guess there's not much else I can say due to the need for atmosphere.
June Mermaid (Creid Remix) - Xenogears
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xZUeI6RCNR4
Creid is a soundtrack that has ten Xenogears pieces remixed, with June Mermaid being the seventh. Some of the remixes have lyrics added, but not this one. It's basically the same as above except for the different instruments, which gives it the familiar feeling without being repetitious. I do prefer the original, but this is a lovely remix of it.
