The Neverhood - Klaymen's Theme
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WreJGBEF5iA&hd=1

Was introduced to this the other day by a topic on Board 8 about The Neverhood being ported to mobile platforms. The Neverhood is apparently an adventure game for the PC that was notable for its unique artstyle (claymation) and music (which incorporates scat singing heavily in most pieces and as a result sounds very different from just about any other game's soundtrack). Obviously, considering what topic this is, we're gonna talk about the latter!

Actually, while Klaymen's Theme does incorporate scat a little, it's a LOT more subtle here than in most of the other pieces on the soundtrack. Despite that this is still my favorite of what I've heard. I've been to a couple jazz clubs/concerts/other performances, and this really reminds me of both what I've heard and the kind of thing I always hope to hear. But it also reminds me a little bit of the kind of music you might hear being performed on the street, and - random Kenri trivia - I love street music more than is entirely rational. It's the mix of the two similar but distinct styles that really draws me to this. Really, it's hard for me to even single out any one part of this as better than any other, because it all works together so well.

Suffice to say, I want to play this game now.

Umineko no Naku Koro ni 4 - dreamenddischarger

The length of this is an issue. There's just no way around that. It cannot ever justify its 10 minute length. It's good, but it would be better at half or a third the length.

5.5/10

The Heart Speaks - Ar tonelico II: Melody of Metafalica

this is... not my favorite AT piece. by which i mean i just really don't like it very much at all. sorry.

3.5/10

.hack//G.U. Vol 2//Reminisce - To You, My Dearest

This is really good, though to me it's beaten out by a few other sad piano pieces that have already been posted or which I've heard recently... Not that that really affects its score, but yeah.

7.5/10

.hack//G.U. Vol 1//Rebirth - Victory Must Be Grasped

That effect you mentioned liking is not a credit to team for me. It really just sounds more like my computer's speakers are eating themselves or something. Rest of the song is okay.

4.5/10

Le Ali Del Principio - Baten Kaitos: Origins

Feel almost like I should skip this until I play Origins but oh well.

Wish the lyrics here were louder; I find they just get drowned out by the instrumentation. As is I think it's... interesting, but it doesn't end up as one of my favorites or anything.

6.5/10, probably on the lower end of that

The Burden - Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII

Sort of like the above, I think this is good but it never really... pops. And then it ends a bit too early, though that is preferable to dragging on for 10 minutes or something.

6/10

Touhou Project: Perfect Cherry Blossom - Necrofantasia

This is like... the Touhouiest track that ever Touhoued, and I don't particularly like it.

4.5/10

NieR - The Ultimate Weapon

The good news here is that this is possibly the best Nier song I've heard, with only SotA / Fate really in contention. The bad news is that I am really getting tired of listening to Nier songs, specifically, their vocals that all sound the same in every song. The other good news is that the vocals in this song sound different enough to prevent me from pounding it with like a 6 point penalty. Or rather, I wouldn't actually do that, but if you had posted like Emil / Karma I'd have been VERY TEMPTED.

7/10

Vein of Grief - Drakengard 2

This is interesting. It's really sort of a chaotic mess that tries way too many different techniques, but it somehow manages to... work. Very odd, but not in a bad way.

6.5/10

Xenosaga II - The Image Theme of Xenosaga II

Reminds me a lot of Exceeding Love, and is similarly difficult to score. I feel like Image Theme is a lot better in places, but it has this one really weak section (1:33 to 2:00ish) which leads to them getting the same score.

7.5/10

Broken Balance - Eternal Sonata

...Well, I do like that violin, but this really just doesn't stand out to me much. Except for that one section (1:02 through 1:10) that reminds me of Pokemon, but uh, I really don't think that's what they were going for there.

5.5/10

Archer, the Hero Who Nobody Knows - Fate/Extra

I definitely like the techno elements here. Really I like the song in general. It's not one of my favorites or anything but yeah.

6.5/10, could even be a 7 maybe, I'm just being sorta arbitrary here.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=woQ3Ih6jKNo&fmt=18

This has an unfortunate side effect of almost sharing the same title as a .hack piece that is superior, but that does not make this a bad piece. The horns are, as always, a big factor for me, and I like the background bells and wind instruments. Really, the entire thing manages to flow together pretty well. I especially like the sections that seem to mellow out briefly before going back to the dynamic parts. It has the feeling of a triumphant piece done right.

Broken Balance - Eternal Sonata

Hmm, this is definitely above average, but I'm not entirely sure how far I'm willing to go past that. This definitely has some pretty neat parts to it. I suppose I'll say 6.0. There are definitely parts of this better than that, but the rest of the song...

Elebits: The Adventures of Kai and Zero - Infinity of Our Love (Japanese ver.)

This is pretty good, I'm not sure if I like it more than The Smile of You, it's kind of close. I guess I'll say 7.0. It's a lot better when the vocals are there, when they're not it suffers.

Elebits: The Adventures of Kai and Zero - Infinity of Our Love (English ver.)

I'll go with... 6.5. A bit torn with still giving it a 7.0 but stressing it's definitely inferior to the first version, but eh.

Archer, the Hero Who Nobody Knows - Fate/Extra

Oh, hey, it's an Emiya remix. I'm a bit torn on this. Some of the things it does, it does better than Emiya. Others though... I think I have to side with the original Emiya here. 7.0.

The Neverhood - Klaymen's Theme

...*sigh*

I had a not-so-good feeling about this immediately after the first few seconds. Then the vocals started. I miss those first few seconds. Honestly, every time the vocals stop, I start thinking "Okay, maybe I should back off just a bit, this isn't-" and then they come back. And that's just not good. 3.0. And I really think I'm giving it a huge break there.

Here I Am - Growlanser Generations

This is pretty good though. I'll say... 6.0. Again, there are definitely sections better than that score, but the rest of the song dragging it down, IMO.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EkJB2TrIeG4&fmt=18

So, this is the opening theme to Disgaea 2, and I think I vaguely referred to this like 600 posts back when I was talking about Opening Themes I like. Probably with Karma or something. So, yeah, this is an opening theme I like quite a bit. It's definitely outclassed for me by other openings like Ring A Bell, but I still like it a fair amount. My favorite part is almost definitely the section towards the end, with is another "probably not too surprising if for some strange reason you keep track of my comments like these in these write-ups" at 3:08 - 3:22.

Disgaea 2: Cursed Memories - Sinful Rose

So this is... interesting. I'm mixed on the instrumentation. Actually, sort of mixed on the vocals as well, but then every now and then there will be like a dramatic swell and those push me firmly onto the side of liking it.

Chex Quest 3 - Provincial Park
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rrIQ4UHQDBk&hd=1

So Chex Quest - the original Chex Quest - is probably in the running for the most better-than-it-sounds game ever. I'm not kidding; it was quite possibly the best cereal-based FPS for the PC ever made.

And hey, like the id Software games it was sort of a ripoff of, it has some pretty good music! This isn't from the original game, but... whatever, I like it a lot anyway.

So... this piece. It starts off with an "instrument" (I'm sure it's some synth thing so I won't even attempt to take a guess here) that I like a lot, and that instrument remains front and center for a long time. Between that and the basic melody, which appeals to me and sorta reminds me of Conversation 1, actually, it's enough to make me like the piece by itself. ...But then whenever I start to get bored or think the song is getting too repetitive, it changes it up or introduces a new effect. Sometimes the changes are pretty major, as in, it nearly becomes a completely different song. Normally I'd hate that, but works so well here, for whatever reason. As an example: 30 seconds through about 48 seconds, just love that part, and it's completely different from the first 30 seconds of the song.

The Neverhood - Klaymen's Theme

I have never heard of this game. Interesting premise for graphics if nothing else.

I had to specifically be told where the vocals are because of that overlying instrument that caught my attention far more than said vocals. That said, this really is not my type of piece. Good try, bad match up for me. Sorry to say that, and to be fair, a couple of instrumental parts are interesting.

Disgaea 2: Cursed Memories - Sinful Rose

My gosh, the Adell and Rozalin in that video picture look awful. Tink always looks awful so who cares about him.

I've always liked the opening version of this. I think the long version actually suffers a bit despite me usually liking the full versions because of its overly long introduction and instrumental parts. They're good, but I like the vocals more and wish they were around more. In any case, still a good piece, as are most Disgaea 2 pieces.

Rating: 7.5/10

Chex Quest 3 - Provincial Park

At least this is not a Cheetos game piece. Dear gosh that game has awful boss music.

This is pretty mediocre all around. I like the later sections of it more, around the two minute mark, than the first part. Neither particularly stands out to me, but it could be worse, I guess. Falls around average, which is honestly better than I'd expect from a Chex piece. Seriously what on earth guys.

Main Theme - Half-Minute Hero
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kIRQ1j169fU&fmt=18

Apparently this is piece 600 for the topic, so to celebrate I posted something... that is good, but not amazing. I sure know how to rise to the occasion. I debated between this and The Last 300 Seconds, which is OPERA in a DRAMATIC and DARK sense, rather than SPYRO OPERA. I recommend giving that one a listen at some point, but anyway, to concentrate on this piece. The, uh, organ I guess, as the intro is cool, then it throws in an electric guitar, then it throws in background vocals with the electric guitar. This is an awesome combination. The last section is my favorite due to that combination, but all of it is quite good. It has an epic feeling to it.

Chex Quest 3 - Provincial Park

I'm going to disagree with CG7, it's the beginning that's the best part of this, with the "later" sections trying to destroy my opinion of this. It's definitely an okay piece though. Let's say 5.5.

Main Theme - Half-Minute Hero

This is better before the vocals show up, but it's still pretty good, that very last part though... I think it was trying very hard to make me take back the nice things I wanted to say. 6.0.

Ar tonelico: Melody of Elemia - Audhumla
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZnXTAIPx01U&fmt=18

Hey, look a non-hymn battle theme (Though arguably you could count, say, Rustling Throb ~Cloche~ as one since it's a dungeon theme that overrides the battle theme)! This is, IIRC, the final boss theme for Phase 1 of Ar tonelico. Certainly not something I was expecting out of Ar tonelico at the time, but I do really like this song. I actually really like the vocals, but the non-vocal parts might be even better to me, I just really like practically everything going on there, both the constant background effects with the guitar (I think) and that other effect that I couldn't even begin to identify. For favorite part, again, honestly I like the whole song (although I suppose you could exclude the very beginning before the vocals come in.) I'd say, "the non vocal parts" but that's still the vast majority of the song, so let me try to narrow this down a bit more. How about... 1:12 - 2:08. ...Which is still a really large section of the song, sorry!

Metroid II: Return of Samus - Surface of SR388
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fCIH943auRA&hd=1

My whole situation with chiptunes is that I really want to like them, because they're usually closer to the kind of music I tend to like, but a lot of times I just find them grating, usually due to them being too high pitched or something similar. As such, I'm always happy to present a chiptune piece that completely avoids that, like this one.

Metroid II is... it's a game, all right. It's a lot better than the first Metroid and worse than pretty much everything that came after it. It's interesting, at least. A lot of its soundtrack goes for complete ambience; not so much this piece, which is... you know, if I was exploring an alien planet, it's the kind of thing I'd want to have playing in the background. As usual I really like its sense of movement, and also as usual, I'm going to say that parts of the song remind me of footsteps, which I always like. As for my favorite part... this piece, I would say, gradually increases in complexity, and my favorite part of it is sort of the midway point, say :09 to :42.

Main Theme - Half-Minute Hero

Still not a big fan of electric guitar pieces, but this one is fairly successful, so I'm okay with it. I really like what it does at 55 seconds. The ending is pretty bad though, yeah. I also think it's about the perfect length for what it is.

6.5/10

Ar tonelico: Melody of Elemia - Audhumla

The vocals are definitely the best part of this for me and I wish the whole song was based around them. I like the technoish elements but there's sort of a disconnect between them and the vocal portions. ...And then the intro is like Donkey Kong-esque, really not sure what they were going for there. Overall it's pretty successful though, it's just not very consistent.

6.5/10, probably on the higher end of that.

Metroid II: Return of Samus - Surface of SR388

My first two or three second was something that could be approximated as "oh god no" but it then got better. But then some of the sound effects here... are not credit to team. Particularly this one that... I'd probably describe it as like... you know when the lava balls jump out of the pits in like SMW or other early 2D Mario? Don't ask me why that reminds me of that, but it does, and I'm not too sure I'm very pleased at it being here. If we overlook those for the moment, what I'd call the "main" part of the song is actually pretty good. Let's say 5.0.

Persona 4 - Pursuing My True Self
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VKrPtx6LzrU&fmt=18

Hey, speaking of "opening themes that I think Sinful Rose is outclassed by"... This is the opening theme of Persona 4, and definitely one of my favorites. I waver back and forth between which has the better soundtrack, Persona 3 or Persona 4. I think Persona 3 probably has it, but it's harder to tell because Persona 4 plays its better songs more frequently. This is especially defined on the world map, where you have Your Affection up against P3's normal world map theme and Persona 4 wins that so badly. Anyway, that's a whole different subject. This is actually a case where I think the full version of the song would hurt it, so this is just the opening version. In any event, my favorite part of the song is at 0:57 - 1:04, specifically the lyrics with "We're all trapped in a maze of relationships that goes on with or without you." Really, I like all the vocals parts in the song, and most of the lyrics. The non-vocal sections are solid too, IMO.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zdNP7s7EC60&fmt=18

I got this game for $10 on sale but never got to playing it. I probably will not for a good while either, I have heard it is incredibly mediocre. That said, it has a nice soundtrack overall, I liked a lot of what I heard. This one is sort of an unusual pick for me. It feels a lot more optimistic and cheerful than a lot of pieces I post. But I have to say that the melody feels really nice to me. It's not so much a particular instrument I like, which is fairly unusual because I often point one out. In this case I simply like the end result of the combinations and recall how it sounds overall. I can't particularly point out a section I like more than any others either, it all seems to go together well. So while I enjoy this piece, the unusual reason for liking it is one reason I chose it.

I do all I can to get links that are not from favorite video game pieces lists, but in this case, I really could not find an OST link for this particular piece. There was a variation of it that was nice, but this one stood out to me more. I love the background vocals combined with the strings. The sections where the strings are alone is not quite as good, but they are still nice. It also manages to be a good length for the type of piece it is, I think. It manages to be relaxing and lovely.

I think that's the name of the opening at least. Anyway, more openings! I think I prefer this to the "normal" Persona 3 opening, but it's kind of close. IIRC, the very beginning is from Memories of You, and I think interspersed throughout the song are parts of Burn My Dread, which are both pretty neat features, IMO. Anyway, I like all the vocals, and the instruments too. Another pretty solid song, in my opinion. I'd say my favorite part of the song is the very beginning with the part from Memories of You at 0:00 - 0:17.

Persona 4 - Pursuing My True Self

This is... decent. The issue I have here is that if I dropped this into, like, TWEWY's soundtrack, it would be bottom tier to me. I do like the vocals I guess, or rather, the non-rap style of vocals, the more rap-like style not so much. I feel like being the full version might help this out, but uh, you say it won't, so. >_>;

5.5/10

Divine Wings - Infinite Undiscovery

Just kind of... generic and unmemorable and slightly annoying. It just kinda sounds like bad JRPG music, which I guess isn't surprising. (Note: I haven't played Infinite Undiscovery.)

3.5/10

Holy Ground - Jade Cocoon 2

Better. I like the vocals, like the strings, like that... background effect, think it's like a tambourine or something. Really just like the whole piece, this is definitely more my speed than the last one.

6.5/10

Persona 3: FES - P3 FES

...the hell?

I bounce back and forth on whether this is good or awful. And then it ends before I can really figure it out. I'm really not even sure it all works together or not. The good thing I can say about it is that it's unique and memorable, at least; I think because of that I lean more towards this than Pursuing My True Self, but really they're close to even in my mind.

Final Fantasy X-2 - Eternity ~ Memory of Lightwaves
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9Diyn-J_N1g&hd=1

Hey look, it's Kenri, posting a piano piece. It's also a Final Fantasy piece, in this particular topic. It's like two incredibly unlikely things that have never happened before happening at once. I'm really sorry but I can either put effort into this OR play Xenosaga 3. I made my choice and I stand by it.

So! I haven't played FFX-2, but I sorta want to in the future. But it's just not gonna happen until I play a bunch of other, better JRPGs, if even then. I really like this song, though! In fact, one of the whole reasons I posted Blue Dragon - Waterside was because I figured Final Fantasy was too overposted in this topic for me to post this instead. I definitely like this more. First of all, the piano is absolutely gorgeous here. But what really elevates it above just being a really good piano piece are all the kind of subtle effects; as such, I think my favorite part is probably the ending, when the effects all become much more obvious. Just a really good way to end the song.

Good gosh, when you take out the Kingdom Hearts series, there really are not many RPGs that start with K. The King's Field series has average soundtracks overall. Some pieces were annoying to hear, others I liked to some extent but would not relisten to. King's Field II had a couple of pieces I enjoyed enough to keep in mind, though none I would rank all that highly. This one is my personal favorite out of what I heard. The strings mixed with the background... vocals, I guess... gives it an eerie atmosphere while still being interesting to me. I like the constant strings with the shifting background. Overall I wound up liking this more than I thought I would, which is something I guess.

Ar tonelico: Melody of Elemia - Audhumla

Of all the Ar tonelico pieces to pick...

Ar tonelico in general has one of my favorite soundtracks, but this falls really short compared to a lot of other great pieces for me. The vocals detract from it for me, and the instrumentals are only a bit above average to me. It all evens out to an average score, but compared to everything else, average is pretty low for an Ar tonelico selection! And I still do not remember hearing this in game.

Metroid II: Return of Samus - Surface of SR388

Oh 'good' a Gameboy Metroid piece.

This is not doing it for me. No interest in any of the parts, though certain sections are better than others. Nothing catches my attention and makes me want to hear it. On top of that it lasts a while and never goes anywhere that makes me feel rewarded for hearing it. Really the only credit it gets is not being horrible enough to make me regret hearing it.

Persona 4 - Pursuing My True Self

Whew Persona 4 to save the day.

I have never heard the full version of this. It surprises me that the full version is apparently worse, I think it would benefit from being longer. That said, I like this opening. The lyrics in particular are enjoyable to me. I wonder if some of it comes from seeing how connected they are to Persona 4, but even without that I think I would like them. The 'rap' section is my least favorite part, but even by my dislike for rap standards, this one manages to do all right. Incidentally, I like it and Sinful Rose about the same, and they get a similar score due to that.

Persona 3: FES - P3 FES

At least this lacks "BUUUURN MY BREAAAAD" jokes.

I always liked this opening piece. In fact, one of the better sections of Persona 4 is seeing this get used again! And what do you know, I like it just about as much as the other openings posted. Maybe some of my bias here, despite the 'rap' parts, is having a mix of female and male vocals that are good, which I always like.

Final Fantasy X-2 - Eternity ~ Memory of Lightwaves

A Final Fantasy piano piece? Sign me up.

This does fairly well and is peaceful. At the same time nothing stands out to me over other piano pieces I have heard and prefer. Nothing that makes me think it is bad, just that it could perhaps be better. I like the first part more than the second, but at the same time it is welcome to have some sort of change occur during it. The ending is nice though.

Touhou Project: Imperishable Night - Flight of the Bamboo Cutter ~ Lunatic Princess

Goody, more Touhou to be excited over.

I always liked Kaguya's theme. Is it one of my absolute favorites from Imperishable Night? Hard to say. The section xp mentioned is very good, and that is one thing interesting about this piece, it changes a couple of times in very notable fashions. Some Touhou pieces do lack in the severity of their changes, but this one stands out to me in its change. My favorite part, as long as it is, is 1:23-2:32.

Lake Noel - King's Field II

Really, this is a strange one to comment on. I like some of the effects and all, and I don't think I can properly claim it didn't go anywhere, but that is the distinct feeling I'm left with. I feel like I should have liked this more than I did, but I certainly did not. Let's say 5.0.

NieR - Snow in Summer
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EtR7EkF9vl8&fmt=18

This song, as far as I know, only plays in two places in NieR. The prologue, and in a much later sidequest (which might be my favorite sidequest in the game, at the very least, I'm pretty sure by chance it was the last one in the entire game I did, which was kind of fitting in a way). That said, it may be one of my favorite songs from the game. ...Although, with NieR that is really hard to say because even an "average" song from NieR would probably be good enough to be one of my favorites in most any other game. I really like how the song continues to build up as time goes on, going from just the vocals, to adding in the drums, etc. It also conveys this "feeling" to me which is kind of an intangible and so I don't think I expect most people to like this as much as I do, I guess I'd call it some kind of feeling of desperation or determination or... something... and really this is why I try not to talk about stuff like this because I can see the trainwreck this sentence is becoming. Anyway, moving on, I think my favorite part might be towards the end where the song completely drops the vocals and drums, and is left with... you know, I'm not entirely sure how I'd describe that. It's very neat though, IMO. The section I mean is very noticeable, but 4:17 - 4:56.

Rogue's Tower - Legend of Legaia
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OTc7H-SS_X8&fmt=18

Legend of Legaia is one of the PS1 games I really want to acquire someday, but I have no idea how I ever will. In any case, this is a cool 'marching' theme of sorts. I really like the beat to it. It does nothing to make it go rocketing above other pieces I have found, but something about this one made it dear to me instantly. I wanted to post it because I really like it, even if my rating does not quite reflect that.

well this is

...

not very good

and then it goes on a looooong time

yeah

Lake Noel - King's Field II

I'm distinctly okay with this until it goes on for like 3 minutes and is super repetitive the whole time.

5/10

NieR - Snow in Summer

And this is... well. It's not Generic Nier Song #14, at least. Unfortunately, it just ends up being like... Generic Ominous Vocals Song #89 instead.

5.5/10, I'm spotting it half a point for the drums.

Rogue's Tower - Legend of Legaia

I'm okay with this. It's not amazing, but it's good enough.

Village of the Sacred Beast - Musashi: Samurai Legend
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vtxCcltKIZE&fmt=18

I think I got this game for like five dollars, not that I have played it yet or anything. This piece probably stood out to me so much because it has some of the same qualities I love from the Okami soundtrack. Would I ever say it could fit in that soundtrack? No, it has enough differences to easily set it apart. But certain sections remind me of it due to its instrumentals. I was not sure how I felt about the... um, boinging noise, if you will. Thankfully it is nowhere near as obnoxious or repetitive as Welcome to Slaughter Gulch's BOING BOING BOING is, and I actually found myself enjoying it as it went on. The 'vocals' and the other instruments are what make it a prize winner in my mind. This does a lot of things to appeal to my tastes.
