| Level: 43 Editor | Final Fantasy X - Besaid Island I'm not sure I'd quantify this as peaceful or relaxing, at least the same kind of peaceful/relaxing as Waterside, but it is quite good, yes. 6.5/10, probably low 6.5 though. --- "There's a pony in the shop, but don't buy it. | Level: 43 Editor | Dragon's Lair - Stormy Night http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2bbwyUBwI8Y&fmt=18 Dragon's Lair's soundtrack isn't amazing, but I think it's okay, and this is my favorite track from it. I like Stormy Night for the same reasons I like a lot of other pieces I've posted: the drumbeat in the background gives the piece a nice sense of movement, almost working like footsteps, and the "instrument" that plays in the foreground is just something I really like the sound of. On the other hand, this doesn't immediately read as "stormy night" music to me, but then I've never played the game, so it could be that it fits perfectly. I dunno. --- "There's a pony in the shop, but don't buy it. It might do something unfortunate to you." ~from the first Summoner's Seal topic |

| Level: 43 Editor | Etrian Odyssey II: Heroes of Lagaard - Cherry Trees and Wings (PC-88 Sound Version) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S5NpP6SBUzk&fmt=18 (This loops halfway through.) Etrian Odyssey II has such a good soundtrack. Really top notch. I didn't realize that until recently, and it definitely requires more investigation. I haven't listened to the entire soundtrack, but I've really liked most of what I've heard, and this is certainly near the top if not at the very top. Anyway, I like this track because it's got a great air of mystery to it, and there's this great sense of... how can I describe this... sort of like building sadness as it goes on. I do think it drops off a little bit towards the end, but it's still really good. FYI, I don't really know what the difference is between the "PC-88 Sound Version" and the "DS Sound Version". They sound extremely similar to me, so I just went with the slightly better one. --- "There's a pony in the shop, but don't buy it. | Level: 49 Liberal Arts Major | Dragon's Lair - Stormy Night Eh... was not a fan of this. The drums were okay, but everything else? Not so much. 4.0. --- xp1337: Don't you wish there was a spell-checker that told you when you a word out? |

| Level: 49 Liberal Arts Major | .hack//G.U. Vol 1//Rebirth - "She" http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4ziRlRBe6gE&fmt=18 And here we are yet again. Oh well! "She" is another one of the Phase Themes, probably my 3rd favorite behind Here I Come and Location of Power. As with practically every phase theme, it has tons of effects I like, and pretty much nothing I don't. Of particular mention are of course the bells, the vocals (both the more "clear" vocals and that vocal-like effect), and this other one that I don't know how to classify that comes in periodically (like at 0:22). Really, the more I listen to it, the more effects I notice and really like - like the really faint percussion beat, which is more clearly heard when the only other things going on are the vocals and the vocal-like effect, as well as another effect you can hear in the background around 0:55. ...Let's just say I really like .hack//G.U. songs and leave it at that. >_> For my favorite part, let's say the section from 0:35 - 1:15, but really, it's a great song overall. --- xp1337: Don't you wish there was a spell-checker that told you when you a word out? |

| Level: 49 Liberal Arts Major | Etrian Odyssey II: Heroes of Lagaard - Cherry Trees and Wings (PC-88 Sound Version) Eh... I feel like this doesn't do too much. What it does do, it's not bad at, but... I'll say 4.5. There are definitely elements of this better than that score, but I feel like it leaves a lot of potential just sitting there. --- xp1337: Don't you wish there was a spell-checker that told you when you a word out? |

| Level: 49 Liberal Arts Major | .hack//G.U. Vol 2//Reminisce - Wailing Capital Wald Uberlisterin http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NmyRnkHkSwA&fmt=18 So, throughout .hack//G.U. there are locations called Lost Grounds. Primarily, I think they're there to show off unique songs like this (Okay, not really). Really though, pretty much every Lost Ground has a unique theme to it that's generally pretty awesome. This is probably my favorite of them all. It's a song that I think conveys a pretty good effect of sadness, which if you look at the title, isn't too unexpected. This isn't most-Phase-Themes-tier for me, but it's still pretty good. Honestly, I don't think I could pick out a favorite part of this, it's pretty solid all around, with no part really sticking out above all the others to me. --- xp1337: Don't you wish there was a spell-checker that told you when you a word out? |

| Level: 43 Editor | The Flintstones - Unused Track 1 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=abIwdBnanwI&fmt=18 The Flintstones, despite being a crappy licensed game, has a pretty decent soundtrack (apparently some/all of the same guys who worked on Waterworld's soundtrack worked on Flintstones', which would explain it). This is especially true if you go past all the tracks that were actually used in the game and into the unused tracks. I've seen a lot of people on YouTube heaping adoration onto Unused Track 2, so I intentionally went for something different here. Anyway, about Unused/Unknown Track 1. It's definitely an atmosphere piece (and also 7 minutes long, though it might loop), so I can see people not liking it on that front, but I really enjoy it. First of all, it reminds me of the music of games like Donkey Kong Country and Metroid Prime, and if I'm filing it in with those, it's a pretty big indication that I think highly of it. Now... I've mentioned before that I tend to associate music with imagery, but the odd thing about this track is that I can't really associate it with anything. Or rather, it seems to fit with more of a broad concept than a specific image - the "concept" of being in a unknown place, alone, with the elements working against you. So, for example, a dense jungle... or on the ocean during a storm... or climbing a mountain while thunder clashes around you. Part of it is probably the persistent wind effect that's used throughout the piece. In any case, I find it fascinating that I can't tie this song to a particular image; that's unusual enough for me that I decided I needed to post this because of it. --- "There's a pony in the shop, but don't buy it. | Level: 49 Liberal Arts Major | The Flintstones - Unused Track 1 Eh, again, this is okay at what it does, but it basically goes nowhere. 4.5. --- xp1337: Don't you wish there was a spell-checker that told you when you a word out? |

| Level: 49 Liberal Arts Major | Ar tonelico: Melody of Elemia - Tower of AT http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0z9q_erhb6U&fmt=18 This is probably my favorite area theme in Ar tonelico I, it unsurprisingly enough plays in some locations in the Tower of Ar tonelico. It kind of conveys a "epic" and "intense" feeling that I really like. While I do like the vocals, they're arguably not my favorite part of the piece, with it instead being the more "quieter" section. Nevertheless, I'll say my favorite section is 0:00 - 1:00, which, the more I think about it, might actually be the entire song. Or at the least it's very close to it, sorry for that. --- xp1337: Don't you wish there was a spell-checker that told you when you a word out? |

| Level: 43 Editor | Guardian's Crusade - Cave of Fear http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=InqXunCBn-w&fmt=18 ...I want to say this was introduced to me through the VGMC5, but I'm not 100% sure. The game was, at least, if not this particular track. I had actually never heard of this game before, which is... sort of weird, I'm not used to having that happen these days, especially with games that aren't all that obscure. In any case, Guardian's Crusade has a pretty good soundtrack - it really sounds a lot more modern than most PS1 soundtracks I've heard, which is neat (not that I have anything against PS1 music). And I especially like this track. I always seem to gravitate towards these kinda jazzy tracks that no one else in this topic likes, but oh well. >_> Pretty much every instrument and effect here is one that I like individually, and when they come together, pretty good chance of me liking the result. Actually, Cave of Fear reminds me of a (less good) version of Dream of the Shore Bordering Another World, which is always a good thing to be compared to. --- "There's a pony in the shop, but don't buy it. | Level: 49 Liberal Arts Major | Guardian's Crusade - Cave of Fear Eh... This is okay, but again, it doesn't do too much, and when it acts like it's going to, I'm almost glad it doesn't because I get a bad feeling about where it was trying to go! I'll say 5.0, but I feel like I might be giving it too much benefit of the doubt here. | Level: 49 Liberal Arts Major | The World Ends With You - Deja Vu http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L_ym7LUD_gs&fmt=18 One of my favorites from The World Ends With You. I'm not sure if it's my overall favorite, that's a bit of a mess with a number of songs in contention. Nevertheless, Deja Vu is a great song. For my favorite part, that'd be whenever the vocals are, at least in my mind, quieter. However, let's say 2:56 - 3:27. --- xp1337: Don't you wish there was a spell-checker that told you when you a word out? |

| Level: 43 Editor | .hack//G.U. Vol 1//Rebirth - "She" This is one of those ones that I just find too busy. The good news is that it's pretty decent whenever it's in one of its simpler sections, but the bad news is that even then it's not great or anything. 5/10 .hack//G.U. Vol 2//Reminisce - Wailing Capital Wald Uberlisterin http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/5/57/Listerine_products.jpg Silly names aside, this is pretty good. It doesn't really... "pop" though, it just maintains a very steady level of quality throughout. That's not a bad thing, especially for BGM, but it does kind of limit how highly I can score it here. 6/10, could even manage a low 6.5/10 if I was feeling more generous than I am currently. Ar tonelico: Melody of Elemia - Tower of AT Welp, this doesn't do anything special, really. I do like what it's got going on at 44-58 seconds, but that's really not a big part of it. 5.5/10 The World Ends With You - Deja Vu Man, this song makes me nostalgic for TWEWY. Even more so than Calling, probably. In any case, this is top 3 or 4 for me in TWEWY, which works out pretty well because I love that game's soundtrack. 7.5/10 ... ... ... what the No, really - listen to them back to back. They're not like the same song or anything, but they're similar enough for me to make that comparison. Same kind of ambient effects in the beginning, and then where Cave of Fear comes in with a brass instrument or like a saxophone, Shore has a string instrument instead. ...this would be much easier to describe if i knew anything about music. --- "There's a pony in the shop, but don't buy it. | Level: 49 Liberal Arts Major | Okay, since Kenri started up the spreadsheet, and since both him and CG7 either did, or are in the process of, giving ratings to everything, and not just the current stuff I resolved to join in this too. So I went through everything in the topic again. This time with ratings (except the recent stuff that I obviously already did). However, unlike the first time, I did not even try to attempt this in a day. It was more like a little over a week. And now I'm done. | Level: 43 Editor | Hotel Dusk: Room 215 - The Last Sleep http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BwdCg8Gqqfk&fmt=18 Plays during the game's climax, and as such I can't talk too much about it in context, except to say that it probably works better there. Just picture this playing while you're walking down a hallway, alone, your footsteps echoing, and you're about halfway there. In any case, I still like this one outside of the game. It is an atmosphere piece, or at least starts off as one - once it gets going it's somewhat less focused on atmosphere. It's very... I guess I'd say chilling. Not quite creepy or foreboding, but... yeah, chilling works. Especially once you notice the unbelievably disturbing "breathing" effect that shows up occasionally; you can hear it for the first time within the first three seconds, but you might have to increase the volume. I don't really know what's up with that, but I think it works here. --- "There's a pony in the shop, but don't buy it. | Level: 43 Editor | Intelligent Qube - Ecliptic http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_JHYTp-Lcao&fmt=18 Another one that, like Senko no Ronde, I liked a lot more the first time I heard it. But unlike Senko no Ronde, I still like this one, it's just gone down from being like a high 7-7.5 to a mid-range 6, maybe 6.5 for me. I have no idea what Intelligent Qube is or how I found this song, I just know that I really wish people would stop spelling "cube" with a Q. Seriously. Fucking stop that. But anyway, about Ecliptic. I think it reminds me of Galaxy music... in fact I'm sure it does, from the orchestration to the vocals, it's very reminiscent of Super Mario Galaxy and especially Super Mario Galaxy 2 music. I really like the last two minutes especially, because that's after it's gotten going and the vocals have come in and all. Overall just a very solid piece, albeit one I used to like more than I do now. --- "There's a pony in the shop, but don't buy it. | Level: 49 Liberal Arts Major | Metroid Prime 3: Corruption - Rundas http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g_3H93k4J90&fmt=18 Probably my favorite piece from Metroid Prime 3. Tougher call if you extend it to all of the Metroid Prime series, but it's still likely in that discussion. This piece goes with Rundas, who, for all the lack of development the other Hunters get, was my favorite. So, it is fitting he gets the best theme. Anyway, I really, really like this piece around 1:00 - 1:59. However, at 2:15, this tries to do almost everything in its power to make me dislike the piece. It doesn't actually succeed at that, but talk about such a major swing in quality that really limits my enjoyment of the piece in its entirety. Really, everything before 2:15 is quite solid, but 2:15 - 2:59 is just "what." It just doesn't feel like the same piece. --- xp1337: Don't you wish there was a spell-checker that told you when you a word out? |

However, at 2:15, this tries to do almost everything in its power to make me dislike the piece. It doesn't actually succeed at that, but talk about such a major swing in quality that really limits my enjoyment of the piece in its entirety. Correct. In any case, I'm going to go with 6.5/10 here, though it feels wrong to put this ahead of SkyTown, but that probably says more about my rating for SkyTown than anything else. --- "There's a pony in the shop, but don't buy it. | Level: 43 Editor | Jet Set Radio Future - Oldies But Happies http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=20u6sif6JjM&fmt=18 Bop-a-do-bop, bop-a-do-bop... I've mentioned this before, but when it comes to non-VG music, I tend to like older stuff. Generally older means '60s/'70s, but it often gets into stuff even older than that. I guess what I'm getting at here is that music that sounds dated is something I can really appreciate and enjoy, and this intentionally goes for that effect, while mixing it with some newer techniques, which themselves sound kinda dated because this game came out like 10 years ago. It just appeals to me on a lot of levels, and it's a pretty amusing song as well, so that's a point in its favor. JSRF overall has a really fun soundtrack, but if Sonic Rush didn't go over well I can't imagine most of JSRF would (Hideki Naganuma worked on both), so I had to pick out something less... assertive. This is honestly probably my favorite or second favorite song on the soundtrack, though - hopefully someone else likes it as well! --- "There's a pony in the shop, but don't buy it. | Level: 49 Liberal Arts Major | Whoooooooooooooa there let's not go crazy here. Off the top of my head only Metroid Prime 2 Menu, Title, MP1 Ending, and maybe MP3 Gandrayda are in contention. In fact, expand this to "all Metroid" really because I'm not sure any non-Prime pieces are even around here. Jet Set Radio Future - Oldies But Happies ... ... I tend to like older stuff. ...I'm okay with this so far... Generally older means '60s/'70s, ...dammit. but it often gets into stuff even older than that. ... fffffffffffffffffffff Anyway, wtf is this, anyway? Aughhhhhh.... It's not awful, but that's only because it tries to play the "So absurd it almost crosses into hilarious" line. 3.5. And I am not at all confident on that because I could see the score ranging from 2.0 to like 5.0, so I'm just going to take the average there. I feel like that's really cutting it a break, and that I'd be closer if I knocked a whole point off of that, but ehhh... --- xp1337: Don't you wish there was a spell-checker that told you when you a word out? |

Hint, it's the vocals (and if you think about it this also makes a lot of sense), guitar, and percussion. Really, the longer this goes on, the more predictable I think I am and the easier I think it is to predict what songs I will like. Now, there are of course some outliers (and a few other things besides what was just mentioned that I typically like a lot), but overall it seems pretty straight-forward to me! Anyway, as for my favorite part of this, pretty easy call for me here, 2:44 - 3:20, I just really like how the song has the two vocals parts going together at that point (well, at the beginning of that section). Honorable mention to 3:50 - 5:40, which I feel kind of concentrates most of my favorite aspects of the song. --- xp1337: Don't you wish there was a spell-checker that told you when you a word out? |

| Level: 43 Editor | Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards - Rock Star [Map] http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w3c-tLPOOtY&fmt=18 Rock Star is the best area for music. Pretty sure it has the best regular theme and the best map theme. Map themes, in this game, mean that they play during the stage select for a particular world, which means the average person will hear them for about 2 seconds. And that's a shame, because this is probably my favorite song in the whole game. In fact, I think that I might have only posted Zero-Two's Theme because I couldn't find this track for some reason. I guess I would describe this music as... vaguely deserty, which makes sense I guess, though Rock Star is about equal parts traditional desert and barren, rocky landscapes. In any case, this is one of those simple ones where I just really like everything it does, even if it doesn't do much. --- "There's a pony in the shop, but don't buy it. | Level: 43 Editor | Live A Live - Silent Labyrinth http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1Mbk6so5bTw&fmt=18 If you ever want to play a JRPG that's completely different from pretty much every other JRPG, check out Live A Live. It wasn't released in the states, but there's a complete translation patch out there. As you might guess from the image in that video there, you play through a bunch of different scenarios - you might saying that you're living various lives, ohoho - and there's an emphasis on things besides the normal "go to town, talk to people, go to dungeon, fight dudes, go to next town, etc" routine that most JRPGs offer. For instance, in Sundown's chapter - he's the cowboy - the main goal is to set as many traps as possible before the bad guys roll into town. I didn't finish the game, mostly because it's easily the most Guide Dang It game I've ever played (to use TVTropes terminology), but it's still really good and completely unique. ...Oh right, I'm supposed to talk about music here. Well, this track reminds me of Heretic's music, actually, and Heretic has one of my absolute favorite soundtracks of any game. Silent Labyrinth just sounds incredibly mysterious and ominous. I love the faux vocals and when the piece suddenly gets more complex for a few seconds (for instance at 0:41). It's another atmosphere piece, but hey, I like atmosphere pieces as long as they're good, and especially if they end up on the creepy/mysterious/ominous/scary/etc side of things, which this one does. --- "There's a pony in the shop, but don't buy it. | Level: 43 Editor | Mega Man 10 - For You (Roll's Theme) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f8DrHPm8OxE&fmt=18 I know Mega Man is kind of overused in this topic series (though not as much as, say, Final Fantasy), but hey, I haven't posted a single Mega Man track yet, and I've got to gets me some of the low scores they tend to receive! aww yeah Now... Mega Man 10, according to popular opinion, has pretty lousy music compared to most other games in the series, and I won't lie, I'm not a huge fan of most of what I've heard. Solar Man's theme is quite good, and then there's this, which is very different from the normal Mega Man music people tend to talk about and appeals to me personally a lot more. Mostly because it's less frantic and significantly more depressing, I guess. It does a couple things I dislike as it goes on, but mostly I enjoy this one - probably my second favorite track in the game (Solar Man just too good). Mega Man 10 - For You (Roll's Theme) (R10 Image Soundtrack ver.) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SYG8xAie3Xk&fmt=18 This version, however, is really good. I basically fell in love with it as soon as I heard it, the instant it started playing. That violin. That violin. So good. Now, if you'll allow me to be Kenri for a moment, not as big a fan of it as I would be if it had stuck with just the violin and some very subtle accompaniment! Violins tend to play up the tragedy angle, which is the entire reason I like this piece. It stays good even when the other instruments come in, but it loses some points with me personally in the process. Ah well. That's only the difference between it scoring like a 9 and it scoring like an 8, no big deal. <_< ...You know, I was going to say this reminded me of Lamentation from Xenosaga II, and I guess it still does, but upon listening to Lamentation, they're really not all that much alike, so not sure what was going on there! --- "There's a pony in the shop, but don't buy it. | Level: 49 Liberal Arts Major | Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards - Rock Star [Map] Well, this is quite boring! That you would even consider placing this anywhere near Zero-Two scares me. A lot. 3.5. Live A Live - Silent Labyrinth This is... a better kind of boring. Slightly. 4.0. Mega Man 10 - For You (Roll's Theme) (though not as much as, say, Final Fantasy) Yeah, but Final Fantasy generally has a much better track record-*Looks at Cosmo Canyon* ...Usually. Also, technically speaking, a Mega Man piece has one of the highest scores I've given, but then again, MM2 Wily Stage 1 is almost undoubtedly the peak for Mega Man. Anyway, this might be better than the last two, but it's kind of close. Let's say... 4.5. Mega Man 10 - For You (Roll's Theme) (R10 Image Soundtrack ver.) Now, if you'll allow me to be Kenri for a moment So, wait, who were you before this? Anyway, I grudgingly agree that this is better, even though I kind of expected to like the original more after the first little while, but as usual the part where you are being you, is what basically keeps this ahead for me. Let's say... 6.0. Might be giving it a slight break here, but yeah. --- xp1337: Don't you wish there was a spell-checker that told you when you a word out? |

| Level: 49 Liberal Arts Major | Final Fantasy XIII - Born Anew http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1QoqzbAgW7I&fmt=18 ***As a tentative warning, I think this particular link is good regarding no spoilers anywhere, but that could change in the future, so I'm just going to give a warning on that just in case. May want to just listen to it in the background or something.*** So, I very recently beat the main story of Final Fantasy XIII, and my prior fear of Snow's Theme being overtaken by a bunch of song was largely unfounded, because I think it might still be my favorite in the game. However, that's not to say FFXIII doesn't have an awesome soundtrack. Definitely one of the best, IMO. A ton of excellent tracks, and very few, if any, bad ones. Probably in, or very close, to my top tier of soundtracks of Xenosaga III, .hack, Ar tonelico, etc. Which is pretty much normal for FFXIII in the sense that I think I beats out every Final Fantasy in every category for me, which generally translates as it beating FFX and FFT, who held most of the series "Best" for me. Anyway, Born Anew is the boss theme for one of the Final Bosses, and I'd argue the "real" Final Boss, even though it isn't technically the last one. I'd definitely argue it's the most challenging one.
, click to show]This is the battle theme of Orphan's First Form, and completely blows away "Fighting Fate" - Barthandelus's Boss Theme which you'll hear right before this, which itself is a very good theme, although I'd say it's much better in-game than out. It also has just a wonderful start-up. The team has just defeated Barthandelus and everyone except Lightning is thrilled and thinks it's finally over, and then Barthandelus's owl flies into the room and Born Anew begins to play as it flies into the pool, and the whole team knows that things are definitely not going as planned, cue Orphan starting its monologue and rising out of the pool and then this fight.
Also, I believe the (translated) lyrics are very relevant to the plot, though I haven't yet seen a full translation of Born Anew's lyrics, but consider this a warning to not just go blindly looking for a translation. I wouldn't expect it to actually be spoilers, but based on what little I know of the translation of Born Anew, as well as the actual translation to a very similar theme - the lyrics quite clearly relate to the game and the plot, and weren't just chosen at random. Anyway, I just really like the vocals (obviously) and the general epic feeling of the song. I think it's my favorite Final Fantasy Battle Theme, if we take Snow's Theme and it's "plays everywhere" out of this, but even if we don't, that puts it at #2 overall. My favorite part of the song is definitely 0:55 - 1:17. It's where the "epic" reaches its maximum point, IMO. This section repeats itself later on in the song as well, but this is the first occurance. --- xp1337: Don't you wish there was a spell-checker that told you when you a word out? |

| Level: 43 Editor | Final Fantasy XIII - Born Anew Might just be my love for Latin and organs coming in, but I quite enjoyed this. That said, I can think of quite a few songs that are like this but... better, which sort of puts a cap on how highly I can rate it. That's kind of the issue any song that goes for the ominous Latin effect is going to run into, unfortunately. =/ Still 7/10. --- "There's a pony in the shop, but don't buy it.
