| Level: 49 Liberal Arts Major | Tales of Vesperia - The Wise One http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x3Jqc0sc7DE&fmt=18 Probably my favorite battle theme from Vesperia, and really the more I think about it, the more certain I am of that, the closest competition would be... I think the 3rd Normal Battle Theme and its variant. Unfortunately, I can't think of too much to say, because it's been so long since I've played Vesperia, although I can't shake the feeling that this was actually called "The Saint" in the Vesperia Sound Test thing, but that's pretty irrelevant. Either way, it's pretty good, definitely one of the better Tales battle themes IMO. As for my favorite part, I'll say 1:12 - 1:34. --- xp1337: Don't you wish there was a spell-checker that told you when you a word out? |

| Level: 43 Editor | Tales of Vesperia - The Wise One Not my favorite Vesperia battle theme! And then Vesperia's battle music in general just wasn't as good as its other music. Overall this is really just... okay. 5/10 --- "There's a pony in the shop, but don't buy it. It might do something unfortunate to you." ~from the first Summoner's Seal topic |

| Level: 43 Editor | New Super Mario Bros. - Castle http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MrAa-_SlRCY&fmt=18 Not a traditional Mario theme, but then, I guess climactic levels in Mario games - castles in 2D games and Bowser levels in 3D games - tend to have music that's pretty different from the norm. Anyway, if any instruments say "evil castle" better than organs and bells, I don't know of them! Overall this is just a very solid, very appropriate theme. As for NSMB itself, it wasn't too noteworthy in the music department. Or the gameplay department, really, though I think I liked it more than most people. The castle levels were fantastic, though, so I guess it makes sense that they'd get the best music too! --- "There's a pony in the shop, but don't buy it. | Level: 43 Editor | Opoona - At Tokione http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=48Rgh4MNoyI&fmt=18 I actually own Opoona but I haven't played it yet. Not sure if my copy even works; I got it from a Hollywood Video that was going out of business (laughingdog.gif). In any case, I'm not sure what I think of the game's soundtrack. It seems technically solid, but a lot of it comes off as sounding like hotel lobby music to me. There are a couple tracks I do like, though, and I might bug you all with them later, especially if I ever get around to playing the game. This track, though, was introduced to me by... the B8 VGMC5 nominations! surprise. It does something I really, really dig, and it's the only track from Opoona that I've heard that does it. I'll do my best to explain this: you hear that instrument/effect/not sure how to describe it that starts at 0:50? To me, what that amounts to is non-vocals that actually read as vocals. It's very odd and I can't guarantee you'll hear it the same way; I've got a few other songs from other games that I intend to post at some point in the future that better illustrate my point here. In any case, I really, really dig that and I wish it was used more, both in this song and in other songs. --- "There's a pony in the shop, but don't buy it. | Level: 49 Liberal Arts Major | New Super Mario Bros. - Castle ...Why couldn't this be SMB1 Castle? *Sigh* Again, this isn't awful or anything, but it's nothing special either. Let's go with... 4.0. Opoona - At Tokione All right, this is better. Somewhat. To me, what that amounts to is non-vocals that actually read as vocals. ...what. Look, I think I know what effect you are talking about, but that does not help that statement make any sense whatsoever. It's only marginally better than saying a drum could pass as vocals. Now, as for this. It could get a better score if it stayed in that "faster" mode all the time. But it seems to enjoy going to periods of doing almost literally nothing. Which is not good. Nevertheless, I'll say 5.0, which is really probably cutting it a lot of slack. --- xp1337: Don't you wish there was a spell-checker that told you when you a word out? |

| Level: 49 Liberal Arts Major | Umineko no Naku Koro ni 1 - Dead Angle http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vNI2tfb74mg&fmt=18 So, this is one of my favorite pieces from Umineko that I've heard. I just really like how it builds up and it simply doesn't do anything that annoys me or that I don't like. Not really going to do a favorite part here, because I like all of it, and the build up is pretty key in my mind, so I'd either be avoiding a lot of it and kind of lessening the impact of the parts after that buildup, or including like the entire piece. Neither a preferable option, IMO. --- xp1337: Don't you wish there was a spell-checker that told you when you a word out? |

| Level: 43 Editor | Pokemon Black/White - Ending http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6oNNYm4PMnQ&fmt=18 Well, I've been avoiding posting Pokemon music for... a while. Pretty sure the last one I posted was Miror B's theme, that was like eight months ago. I feel I'm justified in posting this now, considering I've wanted to post it for over two months. This is, obviously, the ending theme to Pokemon B/W, and wow, it is ****ing energetic as hell (hell is energetic). Most staff rolls go for a kind of slow burn (or throw in some cheesy rock music that's incredibly out of place). Not sure if I've ever heard another ending theme quite like this one, even if it chills out for a while towards the middle there. In any case, I think this fits B/W quite well, actually, because unlike with other Pokemon games, the credits rolling really didn't mean that your journey was over, and I'm not even talking post-game content. I'd say more, but I think that'd be spoilers, and unlike most other games in the series, B/W has a plot that really is worth caring about. --- "There's a pony in the shop, but don't buy it. | Level: 37 Advanced | So i was talking to my cousin the other day and we remembered why we liked online games like Tibia. He's a huge Ultima fan, but for good reason. Think Oblivion with bigger morales and less combat, but terrific music. As you listen to some of the music, you also get this kind of feeling as well. Sounds heavily medievil, but it's so well made. Take a gander, i guarantee you won't be disappointed. I do not keep most of the tracks at the forefront of my mind, but when listening to them, I like them. Saturos Battle Theme is one of the few that I can recall pretty well. I enjoy it for what it is; it is a fast-paced battle piece that works for the boss you are fighting. But defining battle themes with it, like Kenri said? Naaaah. It is above average, but not much more than that in my book. Still pretty remarkable for a Gameboy Advance tune. Rating: 6/10 Fierce Fight (PSP Remix) |

| Level: 49 Liberal Arts Major | Creating the Hero (PC Version) Hmm, this is kind of a return of my, "This doesn't really go anywhere, but it's good at what it stays with." Actually, I'd like to amend that, just as I typed that, it got noticeably better. I'll say 5.0, and probably on the high end of that. Lord British Same as before, but if anything its short length plays against it because it simply doesn't have the time to go anywhere, unlike Creating the Hero. 4.0, though I do feel bad but the length of it really limits it. Iolo's Lute Kind of the same as Lord British really, tough to say, I don't think I can justify putting it a full tier over that, so it's got to get the same score. 4.0. Stones (Inside a house) Similar to the last two in what I would say, but I'll say that this is better, so the score goes up accordingly, 4.5. Dungeon music This has some effects that I think could be effectively used... if combined with one of the other songs. By itself in this song though? Not so sure. Hate to say it, but it's probably my least favorite of the bunch so far. 3.5. Ultima Online - Stones I think I like this more than the previous version, but not quite enough for a score increase, if you understand what I mean there. So, yeah, 4.5. Ultima Online - Ocllo This though, I really liked. I really, really enjoy the "vocals" there and the uh... I want to call it the subdued nature of the whole piece is just great, IMO. By far the best of this group, and it's not even close. ...I'm going to say 7.0. This might be a bit of an overreaction on my part, and this might really only be a 6.5, but I am just so impressed by this piece that I can't help but give it a 7.0. --- xp1337: Don't you wish there was a spell-checker that told you when you a word out? |

Interestingly, this hymn might stand out the least to me from when I initially played Ar tonelico II of the final boss themes, but in retrospect it's definitely my favorite, however it's also probably the most "normal" in the sense that it's the one you'd probably most attribute to the situation. I actually do like the lyrics in this song, well, some of them, but I did kind of warn everyone from staying away from them if you plan on playing Ar tonelico II/haven't already played it. And I think I'm the only one here who has played it, so...! As for my favorite part of the song, it's easily 2:25 - 3:40. Especially the 2:58 - 3:40 part of that. --- xp1337: Don't you wish there was a spell-checker that told you when you a word out? |

| Level: 43 Editor | Quest 64 - Isle of Skye http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DVw3JXxlXo0&fmt=18 I've mentioned before that the N64 might be my favorite system for VG music. Not really sure why, just something about how music from N64 games tends to sound. Quest 64 has a pretty mediocre soundtrack - if not worse - overall, this one track does a lot of stuff I like, and a lot of it is the same stuff that makes me like N64 music in general. Now... this is pretty simple, like a lot of the stuff I post, but for once I am gonna say that I really like that it tries to mix it up a couple times. If it stayed the same the whole way through, I'd probably think, "eh, that's pleasant enough I guess" and move on to something else, but it manages to avoid that by throwing in enough sections like, for example, the one at 46 seconds, to keep me interested. --- "There's a pony in the shop, but don't buy it. | Level: 49 Liberal Arts Major | NieR - Kaine / Escape http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rwa9UO7a-k0&fmt=18 So, I've yet to play NieR, though it's next up in my backlog after I finish playing around in the FFXIII postgame, which hopefully will be done soon. I haven't heard too many pieces from NieR, and obviously out of what I've heard Song of the Ancients / Fate is my favorite and I really, really don't expect that to change. However, this one is also very good. As for my favorite part, that would be when the vocals become, I don't know what word I'd use to call it... more intense maybe? I don't know, intense just feels like the wrong word, but whatever the case it's 0:56 - 1:15. Coincidentally, if there was one thing I'd "criticize" this song for, it would be immediately after that because I feel like the vocals could have "exited" in a better fashion than they do, but it's pretty minor complaint overall. --- xp1337: Don't you wish there was a spell-checker that told you when you a word out? |

Not sure if this song spoils anything in RDR, but it wouldn't surprise me, and I KNOW the comments do. Just... be warned, okay? That said, I was introduced to this amazing song by the VGMC5, where it lost in round one! Who's surprised? I was not surprised. Actually, it's funny, I was talking to xp on AIM while listening to this for the first time, I went from "This has promise" to "*lyrics start* Oh that is so sad" to "I'm actually digging these lyrics" within about a minute. Which brings me to my next point... For once, I can actually say that I'm posting a song with lyrics where the lyrics are not dumb at all. Not even a little. They're actually very, very good, well written and well performed. It deals with some pretty heavy themes, and it does it with such a deft hand; the end result is so simple and yet extremely powerful. Basically, I've got nothing bad to say about Deadman's Gun at all, and if you don't get at least a little bit teary eyed while listening to this, I'd be very surprised. --- "There's a pony in the shop, but don't buy it. | Level: 43 Editor | Umineko no Naku Koro ni 1 - Dead Angle So IIRC you said this was relaxing, but I honestly cannot find it relaxing at all. Mainly because of that... I think it's a tamborine? Starts at like 30 seconds. That reads to me as a musical cue for "something is approaching", and since that's the most memorable part of Dangle to me, it means that the whole song ends up reading as tense, not relaxing. That's not a bad thing! Just a difference of opinion. I actually like Dangle a lot, and I'd say I even tend to prefer music that makes me feel tense to music that makes me feel relaxed. <_< 7/10 Creating the Hero (PC Version) Really good. It almost starts getting too repetitive, but right as that starts to happen 30 seconds in hits and it... kind of "turns around" if that makes sense, and thus stays interesting. Same thing happens about 1 minute in, except instead of turning around again it just adds something new, which... I'm not a huge fan of, but it keeps it interesting at least. 7/10 Lord British This is pretty good, but it's not really VG music. I mean, obviously this version of it is, but you know what I mean. It's a really famous piece, in fact... though all I can think of is 28 seconds through 32 seconds being "Hail... Corkmaster... the Master of the Cork..." from the TV show Frasier. <_< 6/10 Iolo's Lute Really like the uh... "instruments" here, even if they're not real instruments they're pretty convincing. Overall it's just a very simple, nice piece. 6.5/10, almost feel like it should be 7/10 Stones (Inside a house) ...And this one is really good, definitely my favorite of all the Ultima songs so far. It really doesn't ever do anything I don't like. Maybe starts getting a little repetitive by the end, but that's forgivable. 7.5/10 Dungeon music This is... okay, but that clapping/gunshot starts to grate after a while. Would be better if that was used with less frequency. 6/10 Ultima Online - Stones Well, this is not an improvement on the first version of Stones you posted, but it's also not like it fell off a cliff or anything. Really, probably just my preference for simpler music coming through here, but I still like this a lot. 7/10 Ultima Online - Ocllo ...And for the clean sweep, I like this one as well! It's kind of middle of the road for this big Ultima song pack, though. 6.5/10 Ar tonelico II: Melody of Metafalica - EXEC_over.METHOD_SUBLIMATION/.~lamenza Writeup and rating later. NieR - Kaine / Escape I'm really not sure I "get" Nier music. I've liked a lot of what I've heard, but it doesn't really stick with me and make me want to listen to more. This is... not one of my favorites either, though I do like it, at least! 5.5/10 --- "There's a pony in the shop, but don't buy it. | Level: 49 Liberal Arts Major | Red Dead Redemption - Deadman's Gun Yeah, this is definitely pretty good, though a little past halfway through it starts losing my support, still though, I'll say 6.5 because the first half is quite impressive, if it didn't start dropping later it could probably score a 7, but.... That said, I was introduced to this amazing song by the VGMC5, where it lost in round one! Who's surprised? It deserved to lose, it had the misfortune of facing Positive force in Round 1, though I admit that could have gone either way. Mind you, it would win a lot of other first round matches in VGMC5, but that was not one of them. and if you don't get at least a little bit teary eyed while listening to this, I'd be very surprised. ahahahahahahaha. I'm pretty sure that my favorite part of Darkness is some kind of variant of Heartful Cry, or maybe Brand New Days and that both Heartful Cry and Darkness have elements of that. Or maybe I'm just totally wrong, who knows, it could be any or all of the 3! Anyway, my favorite part is pretty easy to spot, it's noticeably different from the other sections! 1:20 - 1:45. --- xp1337: Don't you wish there was a spell-checker that told you when you a word out? |

Persona 3: FES - Darkness Pretty good. Definitely like the part you singled out there. This is my favorite song from Sonic Rush, possibly my favorite "true final boss" Sonic song, and maybe even my favorite song from any Sonic game since Sonic Adventure 2! And as you can see, VGMusicOfTheDay beat me to it, but oh well. If you couldn't tell from my posting of multiple Sonic Rush tracks and a Jet Set Radio Future song, I really like this type of music and its use of sampling! When it's done well, at least. That said, I think this one has a completely different feel than Medley Rush #2 and Oldies But Happies, and is a lot more likely to be... palatable even to people who disliked the other two! But I've been wrong before. Anyway, really I just love how this works as a final boss song. I really love the instrumentation, it's very... I guess sinister and menacing sounding, and pretty intense. And then the sampling comes in and despite being sorta silly, it... works. It really does make the boss seem more powerful, even though Eggman is basically a joke and impossible to take seriously no matter what machine he's using. --- "There's a pony in the shop, but don't buy it. | Level: 49 Liberal Arts Major | Pokemon Black/White - Ending uh oh. And I continue to feel safe with the thought that Route 47/48 will be the best Pokemon song for all eternity. That said, this is still one of the "better" Pokemon songs, but that isn't exactly an impressive feat for me! This has some legitimately pretty good parts, actually, let me rephrase that, one pretty good part - that lasts for like 5 seconds. There's also something about the "quality" of this song, and let me try to explain this, because I'm actually being serious. It sounds really... "rough." I want to say "like this kind of quality wouldn't feel out of place on the original Game Boy to me" but that's still missing what I mean on a few levels (One, I don't inherently having anything against older songs, though it certainly seems like it in this topic! Though I would point to MM2 Wily Stage 1 as an example of how it is done right. Two, I know that shouldn't be it anyway, the DS can be very impressive with music when it wants to be: See TWEWY, KH 358/2.) Whatever it is, it honestly knocks this down considerably in my mind, I almost want to say that without that it would easily be Top 2 for Pokemon (which still isn't that impressive probably!) 4.5. --- Yes, actually, because we've talked about emotional impact of music before and so I figured you'd appreciate this! <_< This falls under context for me 99% of the time, at least when we're talking emotional as in sad. So, without knowing the context the odds of that coming into play are nearly non-existent. I'm not even sure I can think of an example of it ever occurring like that, actually. Closest thing I can think of off the top of my head might be that section in Here I Come. --- Sonic Rush - Wrapped in Black This strikes me as a lot of lost potential, in a lot of ways. First off the "vocals" are not being a credit to the team here, but I'm not necessarily opposed to that kind of "style" I don't think, if you can follow. Now, moving on to the not-vocals parts. This seems to change between "quite a bit of potential" and "what a mess." If this stuck at what it was good at, I think it'd be better than the Pokemon song, but as it is, I don't feel I can say that. 4.0. --- xp1337: Don't you wish there was a spell-checker that told you when you a word out? |

| Level: 49 Liberal Arts Major | Persona 4 - A New World Fool http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8RE3h-SOdYQ&fmt=18 ***Standard Warning to not look at the related videos, to a lesser extent the comments, etc. if you haven't played Persona 4 and don't want to be spoiled*** A New World Fool is part of the rotation that makes up my "favorite Persona 4 Battle Theme" depending on when you ask me. Incidentally, this rotation includes every single battle theme except the normal battle theme and the final battle theme. ...Anyway, A New World Fool is kind of like... "Boss 2" for Persona 4, in the sense that it basically becomes the boss theme in the later phases of the game (I'll Face Myself -Battle- being Boss 1 in this analogy). There is a reason for this, but I don't feel like breaking out spoiler tags and such right now. To what should be no one's surprise, my favorite part of the piece is that guitar. Nonetheless, I do like the other parts of the piece, I'm not sure what I'd call that effect that is going on most of the rest of the time, but I think it's pretty neat, and again, the percussion is pretty solid throughout, IMO. As for my favorite part, I basically said it before when I was talking about the guitar, but 1:38 - 2:00. --- xp1337: Don't you wish there was a spell-checker that told you when you a word out? |

I don't even know how to react to this. <_< Like, whether a song has some kind of emotional weight or not is probably the single biggest indicator of whether I'll like it or not. I wouldn't even listen to music if that never came into play. >_> --- "There's a pony in the shop, but don't buy it. It might do something unfortunate to you." ~from the first Summoner's Seal topic |

| Level: 43 Editor | Tales of Vesperia - Oath of the Union http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XGtqOefmtlc&fmt=18 Yes I know that says United Oath, in-game it's called Oath of the Union I think. Thank you. This is probably my... second favorite track from Tales of Vesperia, actually, not counting any version of Ring A Bell, and only behind Tragic Resolution. Not sure why I haven't posted it in this topic yet, aside from the fact that I've already posted so many tracks from Tales of Vesperia. That doesn't explain why I prioritized Fury Sparks, though. In any case, this is sort of like the Pokemon B/W Ending in that it's not really the type of music I usually like, but I end up liking it anyway. I think part of that is where it plays - the best town in the game, and this track fits it perfectly. It's also got some really nice contrasting elements going on, which is something I usually like. Also if you listen to that stretch from 20 seconds to like 40 seconds, that is very much a traditional "Kenri song". So maybe it's not surprising that I like this piece after all! --- "There's a pony in the shop, but don't buy it. It might do something unfortunate to you." ~from the first Summoner's Seal topic |

| Level: 49 Liberal Arts Major | Tales of Vesperia - Oath of the Union Fun fact: A few days ago when I posted The Wise One, I almost started a write-up for United Oath instead. So yeah, United Oath is great, and I think you're right about it being named differently in-game, something I think is true in most Vesperia cases, the most extreme example is that I'm almost positive that what is "commonly" called Indomitable Fighting Spirit and Undying Resolve are reversed in the in-game sound test. But somehow I misplaced Vesperia like a year or two ago and have been unsuccessful in finding it, which is possibly the biggest mystery in my house right now, because there is absolutely no reason why I can't find it. Not sure I'd call United Oath the best town theme or the town it plays in the best town in Vesperia, but it's definitely up there. I'll say 6.5. That might be giving it half a point more than I should, but it is good. --- xp1337: Don't you wish there was a spell-checker that told you when you a word out? |

| Level: 49 Liberal Arts Major | Final Fantasy XIII - The Gapra Whitewood http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fVhJR-GK8Ns&fmt=18 Back to the FFXIII zone we go. Yesterday I finally fully completed everything you can do in FFXIII. Well, I suppose theoretically I could max every single item in the game, but there's no way I would ever do that. Just getting every single item in the game is more annoying than it has any right to be. On to the piece itself, Gapra Whitewood is probably my favorite "area" theme in the game, so long as we qualify "area theme" as "Not counting situations where music overrides take place" because again, that would open the field up to a lot more pieces, like Snow's Theme, Saber's Edge, Blinded By Light, etc. Gapra Whitewood, predictably enough, plays in the Gapra Whitewood, well, in the upper sections of it. Though it first plays earlier on in the game for a while in a different area. This is another piece that I think is kind of "calm" though it's a little more complicated than that, and it just happens that I am terrible at explaining things like this, because there are definitely parts to it that I would not call calm at all, though I also wouldn't say they're super intense or anything. I really like the vocals that are throughout the piece, but I feel like the entire piece is just very well done and just very pleasant throughout. I'll say that my favorite part is the very beginning, from 0:00 - 0:32, but I really like all of the piece. --- xp1337: Don't you wish there was a spell-checker that told you when you a word out? |

| Level: 43 Editor | Persona 4 - A New World Fool I really don't know what to say about this. I don't particularly like it, but I don't dislike it either. It's really just sort of "there", and then occasionally it'll manage to elevate itself above "there" before dropping back down a bit later. 4.5/10 Final Fantasy XIII - The Gapra Whitewood This, though, I definitely like. Really just enjoy everything it does, pretty much. 7.5/10, could even be an 8, maybe. --- "There's a pony in the shop, but don't buy it. | Level: 43 Editor | Unreal Tournament - Foregone Destruction (Facing Worlds) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i_0G6WPuss4&fmt=18 So, from what I can tell, and keep in mind I've never played Unreal Tournament, this track is called Foregone Destruction, and it plays on the map Facing Worlds. This is probably one of my favorite recent finds. I really like the first half, and normally I wouldn't like the second half as much, but I really think it works. This is one of the few songs I've heard that can really put me in a... kind of trance-like state while I listen to it, and I think the second half is what allows it to do that, after the first half kind of... lulls you into a state of rest. I dunno, that's how it works for me at least; I won't even pretend that it'll necessarily work the same for anyone else. But yeah, because of that, I end up liking this quite a lot. --- "There's a pony in the shop, but don't buy it. It might do something unfortunate to you." ~from the first Summoner's Seal topic |
