Unreal Tournament - Foregone Destruction (Facing Worlds)

This is just kind of there. I mean, I do like a fair bit of what it does, but... 4.5. Just the first half would probably score higher, because by the second half it's more like "are we still doing this?"

.hack//G.U. Vol 1//Rebirth - Differences Between People
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cd70ohsFeP8&fmt=18

Another Phase Theme can't go wrong! In some senses Differences Between People reminds me of Location of Power, just, not as good as Location of Power. However, it's still probably a mid-tier Phase Theme for me, which isn't bad at all overall, and I do think that it is most similar to Location of Power of the others. There's this kind of... wind(?) effect at around 0:29 (and a bit earlier too) that is kind of neat as well. As for my favorite part, it's probably 0:25 - 0:57.

On Page 6, the majority did better. Epyon, Kenri, and GameCobra all had increases, CG7 technically had a decrease, but it's so negligible, it's nearly non-existent. I, however, dropped pretty hard, though I still remain over 7.0 for the topic so far, and will for another page as Page 7 is the only page so far where I have no songs whatsoever. Page 6 itself rebounds from Page 5, but is still the weakest page excluding Page 5, the result being it still brings down the topic average by a little.
I don't remember if anyone posted this or not:

The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask - Majora's Theme
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IQ_BQX88g0k

The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask - Clock Town's Final Hours
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JnKyhItIIJ8&feature=related

Both themes really reflect the dark nature of Majora's Mask quite well. I went and found the sound effects for the Clock Town theme even as I think it enhances the feeling of impending doom. Oh also, someone posted this before but without the sound effects. Not sure if the rating should be applied but whatever it's a good piece I'll leave it here.

You've met with a terrible fate, haven't you?

I have been informed Clock Town's Final Hours might have been posted, well fuck. Here's more

Secret of Mana - Fear of the Heavens ~Title Theme
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JQChkLQV8_c

It's too bad this series is treated like shit in the U.S. It has some great tracks, and this is one of the best title themes I've ever heard.

Secret of Mana - Prophecy
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bEilQOiuE_g

This is a really fucking neat theme for flying around the world map with just fyi. It sounds like some of the tracks I'd hear later in SaGa Frontier.

Castlevania: Rondo of Blood - Bloodlines
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KR0UjAQIX6E

Hey CG, remember how fun Shaft was to fight?

Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne - World Map ~Last Area
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rx5DAp86pqE&feature=related

This theme has that dramatic "things are going to come to a climax soon" feel to it which really enhances the atmosphere even more to an already great game.

Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey - Theme of Chaos
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kWlF7WAv7sw

The classic SMT games have 3 different alignments: Law, Chaos, and Neutrality. This fits the side of Chaos quite well, capturing an almost ritualistic feel.

Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey - Theme of Law
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=POrrKElY4qs

Almost a complete opposite to the theme of Law, this theme makes one feel calm and at peace. Or feel hatred for how fucking stupid the Law alignment has always been in the SMT games, one of the two.

SaGa Frontier - Bioresearch Lab

A lab full of mad scientists who turn into monsters when you talk to them? Best dungeon ever, and a good theme to reflect that.

Vapor Trail (Genesis) - Vapor Trail
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4IDvmCibcuA&fmt=18

aww yeah getting some vapor trail - vapor trail all up in this currently non-vapor trail topic. if i could have one vapor trail from vapor trail play for me while i flew around and left behind a vapor trail, it would be this vapor trail.

...vapor trail.

With that out of the way, I think this is a pretty cool track, almost certainly my favorite from Vapor Trail. Incidentally, there's a Genesis version and an Arcade version, and they're pretty different. It's one of the those cases where I feel like "downgrading" the music actually improved it, though obviously there are a few tracks that became (much, much) worse. In any case, I don't have much to say about Vapor Trail - Vapor Trail except that I think it works for an actiony shmup game like Vapor Trail, and that it tends to bounce back and forth between something I really dig and just... mediocrity. It probably goes on a little long for my liking, but overall I really do enjoy it, and have been listening to it a lot these past few days. Makes good background music.

The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask - Majora's Theme

Majora has better variations on this theme, I mean, it's not bad, but it's nothing special either. Let's say... 4.0.

The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask - Clock Town's Final Hours

Hey, I know imitation is supposed to be the purest form of flattery, but...! Seriously though, you could probably find my (outdated) opinions on Last End in my write-up for it way back on... I'd guess Page 4, but I didn't actually check. It was a while ago. Yes, the sound effects do help it, but I kind of consider that "cheating" and not part of the actual song.

Secret of Mana - Fear of the Heavens ~Title Theme

uh oh secret of mana, getting a bad feeling alert.

This is "fortunately" the best piece from Secret of Mana I've heard. Unfortunately, that is practically the same kind of damning by false praise I give to Pokemon songs, in that this is not a very impressive feat. This certainly improves after that "lol" beginning, but even that the improvement doesn't take it anywhere great. 3.5.

Secret of Mana - Prophecy

...This might be the new "best Secret of Mana piece I've heard" but again, see the above. I'll say 4.0, but barely.

Castlevania: Rondo of Blood - Bloodlines

Thankfully, Castlevania coming to the rescue here with a legitimately good piece. I'll say 6.0.

Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne - World Map ~Last Area

I was getting that same kind of bad feeling in the beginning, but this thankfully improves a lot after that, and becomes pretty good. I'll say 6.0, probably a little below the Castlevania piece, but it's close between those two.

Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey - Theme of Chaos

This however, drops back down considerably. I'll say... 4.0.

Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey - Theme of Law

This starts out better than Theme of Chaos, then decides it wants to be worse, a task at which it succeeds. 3.0.

Portal 2 - I Want You Gone

As tempted as I am to making a "And now I only want this song gone" joke, I won't make it, because that's too harsh. Still Alive is better though, IMO. 5.0.

SaGa Frontier - Bioresearch Lab

Back to "has potential, but then squanders it." This piece. This has plenty of potential to be considerably better, but then doesn't really utilize it. Let me amend that, it gives it a good shot at about halfway through, but that still leaves a lot of the piece a question mark in this regard. I'll go with 4.5.

SaGa Frontier - Last Battle ~T260G

I feel like making the same point about potential, but this one is better about it at least, because it's pretty good either way. 5.5.

VVVVVV - Pushing Onwards

Aww yeah, Pushing Onwards. Out of the VVVVVV pieces I've heard, it's probably my second favorite behind Positive Force. That part where it basically becomes Positive Force is just so good. 6.5.

Link's Awakening - Tal Tal Heights

Tal Tal Heights might be the best Zelda song, I'd have to think about it a bit, but it's definitely a strong contender for that. It's just too good. 6.5.

Mega Man X3 - Intro Stage

Hey, this is fairly good for Mega Man I suppose. 5.0.

Vapor Trail (Genesis) - Vapor Trail

This is pretty neat, I will admit. However, yes, it likes to take some frequent journeys into mediocrity. When it's not though, it's pretty good. I'll say 5.5, because most of the time, I feel like it's in the neat part.

Tales of the Abyss - Belief
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hXEvGhUnydw&fmt=18

This is a song with almost constant build-up, but does it right, IMO, with the build-up itself almost feeling like the pay-off. ...If that makes any sense. Which it probably doesn't. At all. Wouldn't be the first time. It also is pretty good at setting an atmosphere and mood, even without context I think, but it's a bit harder for me to make that claim because for as much as I try to ignore context and nostalgia here, I can't actually erase those things from my memory to make that kind of statement with certainty. Due to how I view the piece, I can't really pick a favorite part too well, but I'll give it a shot and say 1:33 - 2:05.

Whoa, for the first time in a while, we have a position change (Page 4, for anyone keeping track). This page was dominated by CG7 song-wise, 46 to 9... but this was not good news for CG7, who gets destroyed on this page, losing over a third of a point on her average, falling well below Kodan who takes second, and only barely remains ahead of Epyon. Epyon and Kenri were the only other two to even post a song on this page, and both of them increase, but both increases are pretty negligible, which isn't surprising given how few songs they had to work with. Page 7 itself claims the title of weakest page overall with its average, and it nearly drops the topic's total average under a 6, but it's barely hanging in there.
Waterworld - Map
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qVSRfZ5IGRA&fmt=18

More Waterworld because it has one of my favorite soundtracksssss. I'm not really sure how to qualify this one; it's slow (really slow, borderline glacial) but I wouldn't really call it relaxing. Incidentally, if you were about to reply with "I'd qualify it as 'boring'", you now owe me $10. Sorry. In any case, it's one of the most unique songs on the Waterworld soundtrack, in that I'm not sure I've ever heard anything else quite like it. And if you were about to reply with "There's a reason for that", you owe me another $10. Sorry again.

Anyway, I'm really not sure how well I see this working as a map theme, but then I feel like when you have a game like Waterworld, nobody really cares if the music actually fits. Shame Dean Evans was stuck with games like this one, because he's got more talent than just about anyone else in the industry that I can think of.

This is probably one of the "nicer" and "calmer" dungeon themes I can think of off the top of my head, which is something I enjoy (of course, it has its time and place.) Admittedly, I think this piece has a bit of a lull in it around the middle, but there are some really nice parts to it, IMO. My favorite of which is probably 2:06 - 2:28.

Xenosaga Episode I: Der Wille zur Macht - Last Battle
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tZ6ufAOSUhM&fmt=18

My first Xenosaga post in this topic. It's like a rite of passage.

This was probably my favorite song in the first Xenosaga, which shouldn't be that surprising. I actually liked the game's music a lot, there just wasn't enough of it. But that's already been discussed so I'll move on.

Anyway, I think I tend to like battle themes that sound vaguely sad or sorrowful or something, and this one pulls that off. It starts off almost whimsical, but then it quickly takes a turn for the more melancholy, which probably improves the piece overall. Not sure what I think of those vocals, but they're okay I guess. Don't really bring much to the party, though.

As for when this plays in Xenosaga, it plays for the final boss fight, which is a really lame battle, all things considered. It's a very Golden Sun final boss, and people who have played Golden Sun will know what I mean by that. I don't think I'm exaggerating when I say this piece is the best thing to come out of it.

The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask - Majora's Theme

Ehhhh, not sure about this. It's not really something I want to listen to, but I can imagine it working quite well in-game, which puts me at an impasse in terms of how to rate it! But if I was forced to give a rating, I think I'd go with like a 3/10 here.

The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask - Clock Town's Final Hours

..........You know, I might get some flak for my decision here, but:

I'm going to allow this.

Definitely better than vanilla Last Day. Actually really good, the bells and other sound effects fill in the dead air in the vanilla Last Day quite well and just make it function a lot better as music.

7/10

Secret of Mana - Fear of the Heavens ~Title Theme

Not sure about this. It does some stuff that's good and some stuff I'm not too big on. 5.5/10

Secret of Mana - Prophecy

not an improvement. Secret of Mana has one of those soundtracks I just don't "get", I guess. Although I have heard some good stuff, but ehhh.

4/10

Castlevania: Rondo of Blood - Bloodlines

Not one of my favorites from Castlevania. Definitely pretty good though. Really my big complaint is that it just doesn't... "pop", if you get what I'm saying, though it tries pretty hard near the end there. 6/10

Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne - World Map ~Last Area

The first few seconds of this remind me of Dense Fog Today and wow I can't believe I just compared Kirby to Shin Megami Tensei, no matter what the context. ...But then 0:15 seconds happens, and it just goes in a direction I don't like too much.

4.5/10

Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey - Theme of Chaos

nothing says chaos like a repeated set of actions usually related to social custom

That said, I can see what they were going for here with the ritualistic feel, even if it's not the first thing I'd associate with chaos. It's pretty okay, and I'll give it some credit for being something different.

6/10

Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey - Theme of Law

Significantly more my style, but it also has kind of a "been there, done that" feel to it whereas Theme of Chaos was more original. It's also spends a LOT of time basically doing nothing at all. Yeah, not a big fan of this.

4/10

Portal 2 - I Want You Gone

skipping this lol

SaGa Frontier - Bioresearch Lab

This is really good. I can't really see it working for a... Bioresearch Lab, but whatever. Also goes on a bit long for my tastes, though obviously that wouldn't matter in-game.

7/10

SaGa Frontier - Last Battle ~T260G

Not sure how I feel about this. It's not bad or anything, but I don't really want to listen to it again.

5/10

VVVVVV - Pushing Onwards

Add VVVVVV to the list of soundtracks I don't "get". I do like most of what I've heard, though, and this is not an exception there. 6/10, could even be 6.5 on a good day.

Link's Awakening - Tal Tal Heights

Stealing my future material. <_< But yeah, Tal Tal Heights is good. And everyone knows that so I won't bother commenting on it further. 6.5/10

Mega Man X3 - Intro Stage

unpopular opinion: I don't like MMX music. And this is not an exception.

4.5/10

.hack//G.U. Vol 1//Rebirth - Differences Between People

This is not as good as Location of Power. Really, the big issue here is that I just don't like how it sounds about half the time, and the other half of the time it's just a less-good Location of Power.

3.5/10

Tales of the Abyss - Belief

This... really never goes anywhere. But it's not bad or anything. 5.5/10

Valkyrie Profile 2: Silmeria - Flickering of Deep Eternity

See above, really, though it does try pretty hard near the end, I guess. 5.5/10

Oh, hey, it's Xenosaga I's best battle theme. Which would be more impressive if it had more than 2 battle themes. This is pretty good though. 5.5.

The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask - Clock Town's Final Hours

...So, apparently this is counting now. So, actual rating time... This is an improvement on Last End (and as far as I know this is still called Last End) but it's not a massive improvement... in a stand-alone setting. Again, in-game this is very, very good. Out of game... less so. I'll say 5.5.

Kingdom Hearts Re: Chain of Memories - Graceful Assassin
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HZ4ehPvw8p8&fmt=18

You know, Re: Chain of Memories was full of some pretty great pieces at the very end. It really is too bad that the game actually didn't just start at the last level. Anyway, this is the first of the final boss themes in Re: CoM. To my understanding, unlike Lord of the Castle, this theme was in the GBA version, but Re: CoM made it a lot better IMO. As for my favorite part, it's the same section that basically recurs in most, if not all, Organization XIII themes, the section from Another Side/Deep Dive, 0:45 - 1:08.

You Have to Burn the Rope - Now You're a Hero
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VmuiwOGi5gA&fmt=18

Listening to this song probably counts as spoilers. The game itself is like 5 minutes long and I've linked to it below, so, you know, you can just play it first if you care about that kind of thing.

Yes it's over now / We didn't want to make a longer game...

This is the credits song from the flash game You Have to Burn the Rope. From what I've heard, the game was meant to be a parody of Portal - it's a very short, very easy game with spoonfed puzzles and an amusing song at the end. It ended up being liked for... exactly those reasons. Considering that, you could probably group this song in with Still Alive and (presumably) I Want You Gone.

And how does it stack up against them (well, against Still Alive, the only one I've heard)? ...Not very well. It's just not as well put-together of a song, on any level. Not as memorable, or as funny, and the vocalist isn't as good. I still think it's a cool song though, and I have to admit that I was cracking up pretty hard the first time I heard it.

Zone of the Enders: The Fist of Mars - Every Day
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bOWZ8WD05Zk&fmt=18

Standard warning about there really not being any reason for this to be four minutes long and permission to bail on it after a minute or two goes here.

Fist of Mars is the only ZOE game I've played, and that was back when I didn't really care about VG music. Listening to its soundtrack now, it's decent enough but most of it isn't my style. Every Day is definitely my favorite track. It's got the same kind of quality issues that a lot of GBA games have, but I don't think it's as noticeable here as in, say, Zero Mission's soundtrack.

Anyway. Really, what I like about this song is that it adds and removes a lot of different effects one at a time, in such a way that never makes them seem out of place or unnecessary. I like some of them more than others, but really I like just about everything it tries, and the fact that it manages to do so many different things successfully is just the... cherry on top. Other than that, it's just the same kind of chilled out BGM that I find myself going back to again and again.

Kingdom Hearts Re: Chain of Memories - Graceful Assassin

This has a lot of elements that I like, but... none are really used in any way that's unusual or notable at all. It just doesn't really "pop", and overall just ends up being Yet Another Okay Battle Theme.

Really not even sure if it's better than the GBA version or not. I dunno. They're both pretty unremarkable.

5/10

You Have to Burn the Rope - Now You're a Hero

*Sigh* You want to know the difference between this and Still Alive/I Want You Gone (besides something generic like "They're good")? They could actually get me to crack a smile at some point - not that this exactly would necessarily help in a rating, even if it was only once. Also, much better non-vocal parts. ...And vocal parts. ...And... well, you can see where I'm going with this. 4.0.

Zone of the Enders: The Fist of Mars - Every Day

This is... interesting... I'm not inherently opposed to what it does. ...But it does almost nothing. For four minutes. And that's just terrible. 4.0

Touhou Project: Phantasmagoria of Flower View - Spring Lane ~ Colorful Path
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=StnyX4_PfPk&fmt=18

I'm taking a cue from CG7 over naming convention here. Mostly on the presence of the word "Project." I'm just trusting she knows how the naming for all this goes better than I do.

When I first heard this, it became my favorite Touhou song that I had heard by a considerable margin. I've since... backpedaled on that position. It might still be my favorite, but I'm not even sure of that anymore. What it really comes down to is that it has one part I enjoy so much, and then another part that a lot of other Touhou songs I've heard could win over easily. On that note, I'm pretty sure this loops at least once, if not multiple times, but yeah... Anyway, the part that I really like is 0:00 - 0:27, I can't say enough about how much I like the percussion there. Well, I certainly could, but I'm not. Not to say I don't like the other parts, but it just feels like such a let down after that section.

Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards - Factory Investigation
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dWiHtzP-bc4&fmt=18

I'm returning to the Kirby 64 well.

This is probably what I would call the "best" track in Kirby 64. Not my favorite, but my choice for the technically best. That said, I still like it a lot - back during my Rock Star [Map] writeup, I specifically said that Rock Star has the best map music and regular stage music because if you open the field to all kinds of stage music, this is my favorite. I think it only plays during one part of one level (three guesses at what this part consists of), but I could be underrepresenting it there.

I've mentioned a couple times, at least implicitly, in for example my Shinra Company and Magmoor Caverns writeups, that I really love when a song manages to blend in sounds of machinery and make them work with the music. When this is done poorly it usually ruins the piece outright, but when done well I just love it, and Factory Investigation definitely does it well. And unlike Shinra Company and Magmoor Caverns, it doesn't use it subtly, at all, which makes it even more commendable that it manages to pull it off so well.

Donkey Kong Jungle Beat - Aerie Fortress
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qUh-LxGRic8&fmt=18

...So Donkey Kong Jungle Beat is sort of the spiritual precursor to Super Mario Galaxy, except... as a weird 2D platformer/rhythm game hybrid. I think similar teams worked on both, and if you play DKJB, you can really see the similarity to SMG in terms of level design. Just... in 2D, obviously.

Anyway, the soundtrack isn't really very similar, except that personally I think it sounds more like Mario music than DK music. And of course, Jungle Beat being part rhythm game, you're not getting the full effect by just listening to this. But whatever. I think Aerie Fortress is a pretty cool track. It sort of reminds me of a less good Floater Land, but only thematically; I kind of see them both as like... a "heroic conquering" type theme. Incidentally, it's way better than Battle for Storm Hill. Dunno why Brawl chose that one, though I don't dislike it or anything.

Touhou Project: Phantasmagoria of Flower View - Spring Lane ~ Colorful Path

So my feeling about this is, and always has been, that it's pretty good and better than most Touhou songs I've heard. Shame it was up against The Moon R1 in the VGMC5, but eh, them's the breaks.

6.5/10
