Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards - Factory Investigation

This is pretty good for a while, then kind of decides to do what it can to make me regret praising it. Still, I'll say 5.0.

Donkey Kong Jungle Beat - Aerie Fortress

donkey kong music uh-oh. ...Well, this is okay, I guess, accounting for my expectations and all. I'll say 4.5.

NieR - Grandma
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LXvaS52lfUs&fmt=18

So, I've started playing NieR, and honestly, it just might have the best soundtrack I've ever heard. It's that incredible. Song of the Ancients / Fate is still my favorite so far, but practically every song in NieR is great at the very least.

I really like the, I suppose I'd call it "melancholy, but still determined" kind of feel of this song. It works even better in context as well, IMO. I can't really choose a favorite part because no section in particular stands out above the rest to me, it's just very solid all around, if you ask me.

First, corrections! Silly me, Page 7 was not the lowest rated page as anyone who can look at numbers can see, that is still held by Page 5.

Now onto Page 8, we have another position change as now Epyon takes over 3rd place from CG7. Epyon, Kenri, and myself all increased our averages, while CG7 technically dropped, but by less than a hundredth of a point. I also broke my "average dropping" streak, which is unsurprising since I'm pretty sure my 9.25 average for the page has shattered the single page record, but then, I only had 2 songs, so it's not too crazy.

Page 8 is the highest rated page since Page 4, and helps keep the topic's average over a 6.0.
Note: The leaderboard has been updated to reflect the increase in score PURGER/Misha. However, for CG7's line in the leaderboard it treats that adjustment as having occurred on Page 9 (Read: If you summed the scores for the Page 9 scores you'd get 33.5, I just added the .5 on to that.) Furthermore, the Page 2 Total Average Score has also been updated to reflect this, and the Page 9 Total Average Score only takes the songs on Page 9 into account. Topic Total Average change also reflects this. Not that anyone cares!

We have yet another position change as Epyon falls prey to the weakness of having comparatively very few songs - it's a lot easier to have bigger swings in total average. This can work out both positively and negatively, but this time it impacted Epyon negatively, dropping him back to 4th, as CG7 retakes 3rd. Kenri drops marginally, while I continue to have an almost statistically defying surge as only 4 new songs cause my average to jump over an eighth of a point, and given where I was starting from, that's pretty crazy. It did help having an 8.875 page average, of course.

Page 9 easily ends up as the highest rated page yet, crushing Page 4's mark by nearly a third of a point. Unsurprisingly, the topic's average also climbs up some more with this result.
NieR - Grandma

This is... probably one of the better NieR songs I've heard, but again, I do not hold its soundtrack in nearly as high of an opinion as you do. My favorite part is probably the few seconds at the beginning before the vocals start, which is... telling.

Sorry about that short little break as real life/unreal life/other things interfered. We are back now.

We Love Katamari - Everlasting Love
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lf64_rJk8dY&fmt=18

I can sing a song for you and me...

This song.

This song is the reason I listened to a lot JPop for a few years back when I was younger. Music like this. This particular one was introduced to me by the VGMC5, but it really struck a chord with me because it reminded of the kind of music I used to listen to when I was a teenager. I'm not even sure why I stopped; Adult Swim pretty much stopped showing any anime I was interested in, which killed my interest in anime, which then killed my interest in JPop, I guess. Listening to Everlasting Love is a huge nostalgia trip and makes me wonder why I ever grew out of music like this.

Incidentally, the first time I listened to this song, I was in a terrible mood, and listening to it immediately restored me to normal bubbly Kenri. Every time since, listening to it has improved my mood tremendously. It's not the best song; it doesn't have the best lyrics, or the best vocalist, and the instrumentation isn't anything to write home about. But it is really fun, and when I listen to it I don't really care about anything else.

Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow - Pitch Black Intrusion
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P5iPHgqiivg&fmt=18

I think this is the first Dawn of Sorrow original I've posted, which makes me wonder what took me so long. I guess because I wanted to post the song that plays during the intro, but it's not on the sound test, and actually, I realized a few days ago that it's like a variation on Pitch Black Intrusion anyway.

Anyway, this is the song that plays during the first area in Dawn of Sorrow, I believe, and as such it's kind of iconic of the game as a whole. Definitely top two for me in the whole game, excluding the DoS versions of older CV songs like Bloody Tears. It works pretty well for the early game because at that point, everything is weak and dies in like one hit. Hell, I think the first area isn't even inside the actual castle yet, or is at least partly outside. After a while the music becomes much more ambient, but for the very early game I can really appreciate a more psyched up track like this one.

For the record, there's a version of this in Harmony of Despair as well. ...As usual with Harmony of Despair's remixes, I really can't recommend it at all. But eh, it's there if you're curious.

Page 10 sees GameCobra, Kenri, and myself all increase in average. Kenri and GameCobra don't change by much, for different reasons - GameCobra for having just one song on the page, Kenri for having a ton of them already. CG7 barely drops, actually marking the first time so far my calculator decided to express the change in the -2.9###E-4 format. Meanwhile, I increase by about an eighth of a point for the second straight page, averaging 8.25 for the page despite having a 5.0 rating on the page, due largely in part, most likely, to DORCHADAS scoring a 10.0. Page 10 just falls short of passing Page 9 for the highest rated page, but it takes over second with a pretty commanding margin. Obviously this further boosts the topic's total average again. Hahahahahaha. yessssssssssssssssssssssss.

But there are parts of it, especially the vocals, that I think it did well.

The vocals are so good.

Total Annihilation more like what again.

This is a cool piece. It has some prominent horns that I like and a good orchestration overall. I have to agree with Kenri, this sounds like an actual orchestra. I could see this playing during a movie rather than a video game. Maybe it plays during a cutscene? This seems a bit strange for a level or fight theme. Definitely like it though.

Well, Total Annihilation is an RTS I'm pretty sure, so that kinda facilitates orchestrated music during gameplay better than some genres, at least.

We Love Katamari - Everlasting Love

This is pretty good, but nothing exceptional. I'll say 6.0.

Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow - Pitch Black Intrusion

I actually had fairly high expectations for this coming in (Probably because the title reminded me of Iron Blue Intention for some reason so I was thinking older Castlevania music-tier, at least what I've heard), and was let down. I really shouldn't be surprised! This is "okay" but that's about it really. I'll go with 5.0, and even then I wonder if that's a bit too high.

Shikkoku no Sharnoth - SAUDADE
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xziGCbz_BS0&fmt=18

Fun fact, I probably would never have heard this if not for a DORCHADAS discussion. As you can see, it's from the same game. Now, I'll say up-front I don't think this is another DORCHADAS-tier song. It is, however, very good. Anyway, I just really like guitar in this, and of course the vocals are excellent again. I like the other effects too, but those are probably the main ones to me. Honestly for my favorite part, "any part with vocals" would be an accurate statement, but I can arbitrarily narrow it down to 0:26 - 1:05, I suppose.

The World Ends With You - Long Dream
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bzyMfRlQegk&fmt=18

So, it's been said before, but TWEWY has a great soundtrack. Long Dream might be my favorite battle theme in the game, it used to be Emptiness And, but I think Long Dream has surpassed it in my mind. My favorite part is the very obvious effect at 1:55 - 2:09. I think in various other songs I've made comments about liking similar types of effects in songs. I also like the vocals in general obviously, with special mention to the chorus.

Iridion II - Two Years Gone
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oMDNP7o3Y2U&fmt=18

More Iridion II. This is the last one I have, though.

There's not much for me to say about this one. I like it. It's not as good as See the Sun Burn in my opinion, but it's a step above the rest of the Iridion II soundtrack. It's also the other song I mentioned back in my writeup for See the Sun Burn, the one that introduced me to the game's soundtrack. There isn't really any part of this I even like more than the rest, so I can't really pad my writeup with that >_>, except to say that I don't like the first 10 or so seconds very much, but whatever.

Well, this at least meshes better than DORCHADAS, though that comes at the expense of standing out a lot less. In any case, "good but not DORCHADAS tier" sounds about right.

6/10

The World Ends With You - Long Dream

Not my favorite from TWEWY! I really like parts of it, I just don't like the song as a whole that much. At least compared to the rest of TWEWY's soundtrack. It's pretty good on its own, at least.

6/10 again

Prop Cycle - Cliff Rock
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x0wxJHbcDYE&fmt=18

Something I've been meaning to post for... months, probably, but I kept prioritizing other stuff. Well, no more!

I think this is pretty good. For me at least, it captures a nice sense of wonder; I could definitely see this playing in an RPG, for one of those generic "hey look at how expansive the world is" scenes. The parts of the song that especially capture that in my mind are, for example, 1:05 to 1:34, but really I just like the whole thing a lot. What I really don't like is that very fake sounding clapping sound in the background at certain parts, I dunno, it just detracts from the rest of the song for me. This is also another one of those ones that I would characterize as sounding very "clean" and "crisp", while secretly wondering if anyone else even knows wtf I'm talking about when I say something like that. Oh well!

Fire Emblem Gaiden - With Mila's Divine Protection (Celica Map 1)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m-KtXn64Hns&fmt=18

Haven't posted too many chiptunes, so here's one. It's not because I dislike them, I just started playing games during the Genesis/SNES era, and only really got into it even later than that, so my experience with really early VG music is quite limited.

Anyway, I quite like this one. It does a lot of different things, and thus manages to stay interesting throughout. I'm really not sure about it as a map theme though; I haven't played FE2, but I can't really picture it working for that. Normally I'd want something a bit more chilled out for a tactics game. There's also a remix in Brawl, but it's pretty awful and I really don't like it at all. Definitely check it out if you're curious, though.

This is okay, pretty average really, maybe just a shade under that. I'll say 4.5.

Prop Cycle - Cliff Rock

This is... slightly better, maybe. I thought that at first, but as time went on I questioned it. Oh well, let's say 4.5 as well.

Fire Emblem Gaiden - With Mila's Divine Protection (Celica Map 1)

This is clearly the best of the trio, though it's not "great" or anything. I'll say 5.5.

Umineko no Naku Koro ni 4 - dreamenddischarger
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NuRRe1moVhY&fmt=18

So, to my knowledge, which is not very extensive on this subject, dreamenddischarger is one of the more popular Umineko songs. But again, that could be totally wrong, I'm just basing this off of what I've seen. There is a reason for this, dreamenddischarger is great, though I wouldn't call it the best Umineko song, that would go to lastendconductor for me, but that's not to take anything away from dreamenddischarger.

Now the song has a number of pretty distinct parts IMO, and I have varying opinions on them. My favorite is the section from 3:54 - 5:03. Really, that part is just concentrated awesome to me. I really wish the whole song was like that, I'm not even sure that would work or if it even could, but I like that part so much. The part right before it is probably my "least" favorite of all the different parts. I also feel like this loops at least once in there, but I'm not sure.

1.) Passion from 9.5 to 10. This really has been my favorite video game piece overall. I feel it should have one of the rare tens I hand out.

2.) Misha Purger from 8.5 to 9. This is because, once I have heard more hymns, I have gotten a better feel for where I want this one placed and 8.5 really does not reflect it.

Same deal as before regarding adjustments. The leaderboard parenthetical +/- things will act like the points were earned on this page, but I'll fix the page average scores and the topic total average score's +/- thing.

Those adjustments actually lead to Page 3 leaping over Page 4 in the page rankings, making Page 3 the 3rd highest rated page of the topic.

As for Page 12. CG7 only has one song on the page so she technically increases, but not by much.

[As it turns out, my method of scanning CG7's comments and just stopping to total for the people she labels one at a time is flawed when they are labelled incorrectly. CG7, in fact, has no songs on this page. Nevertheless the leaderboard still notes the +0.5 adjustment on EXEC_PURGER/.#Misha extracting so she still technically has an average increase displayed despite not posting a song on the page. I could have zeroed out the columns since no songs were posted, but I felt this was more consistent with how I've been handling adjustments.

Never you fear though, the Leaderboard can not be stopped by such errors, and I think everything is okay again. All I had to do, I believe was fix my average and CG7's average to account for this.

And now back to your regularly scheduled leaderboard commentary...]

Kenri drops a bit, and I continue to climb upwards. However, I think that is the end of that, because from here on out, I think it's only downhill for me. Page 12 itself comes in just below Page 11, making it the 6th highest rated page out of 12. Despite pretty much being middle of the road in that light, it does help the Topic's Average increase yet again.
Another thing I heard during the VGMC5 nominations period. I didn't nominate it. Probably should have, though; I don't think it got in, and it's quite good.

So this, to me, is a "cheerful" piece done right. I usually don't like 'em, but here I think it works. ...And now that I've said that, I hope it's actually supposed to be cheerful, because I've never played whatever visual novel this is from. Anyway, really what draws me to this piece is some of the effects - especially that... like whistling noise at 58 seconds, which is probably some kind of flute or something but I suck at instruments so just listen to it and figure it out for yourself. I also really dig the percussion here, and combined with the aforementioned effect I think it sort of makes me think of a train. ...I honestly don't know what the deal is with me and train music, I think this is like the 3rd song I've posted for that reason. "Welp".
Kenri brought it to my attention that I somehow stupidly forgot to rank a piece early on in the topic. So here, I am finally doing it now. This was on page 2.
