| Level: 49 Liberal Arts Major | Valkyrie Profile - Rise Above The World http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zKi-AwvYvpg&fmt=18 I expect this to probably be one of the less popular picks I've made, but I really like this song, so yeah. IMO, this is far and away the best song in Valkyrie Profile 1. It really sets the scene it plays in, at least I think so. [Spoiler for Valkyrie Profile, click to show]It plays in Dipan after you time travel back and you witness Dipan's Fall with Hrist and Arngrim effectively at the head of it. Only, IIRC, during the flashback, they only refer to Hrist once by name, and otherwise it's just still "The Valkyrie" and I believe I thought this was a glimpse into Lenneth's past at the time. This was also the part in Valkyrie Profile where I thought the plot was actually, you know, doing something. Even though I'm fairly certain Dipan is optional (well, strictly speaking, I think pretty much everywhere is optional in one way or another, but Dipan especially.) Of course, as it turned out, I was disappointed in this regard. Dipan was probably my favorite part of the game by a wide margin, with maybe only the endgame (A Ending, I've never actually played the B Ending) even near the conversation </spoiler> [Spoiler for Valkyrie Profile 2. Kind of, but to be on the safe side, let's say yeah, spoilers, click to show]But Valkyrie Profile 2? Aww yeah, kind of set in/sort of about Dipan right before the fall. So I got everything I wanted and more! In fact, Valkyrie Profile 2 basically took all my favorite parts of Valkyrie Profile 1 and gave them much more attention. And the result is amazing. I was, however, extremely disappointed Rise Above The World didn't make a return in some form in Valkyrie Profile 2, it would have been awesome. Of course, I already think the VP2 soundtrack is amazing, so having Rise Above The World in it too might have been too much awesome. </spoiler> Okay, that VP2 tangent was probably getting way off the topic (since it's marked with spoilers, I'll just say that Rise Above The World doesn't play in VP2, the VP1 spoilers just kind of led my rambling off in that direction.) So, back to the song itself, my favorite part is definitely 70 seconds to 80 seconds. Honorable Mention to 25 seconds to 35 seconds. Another Honorable Mention to every other part. >_> --- xp1337: Don't you wish there was a spell-checker that told you when you a word out? |

| Level: 43 Editor | Sunset Park Act 3 - Sonic Triple Trouble http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dot0iGpUL5I Sonic Triple Trouble is probably the best of the GameGear Sonic games, though I'll go ahead and admit that I'm mostly basing that off LPs because I haven't played them all personally. Luckily for me, the same LPs made a point to note how awesome this track is. It plays, as you might have guessed, during Act 3 of Sunset Park, which takes place on a giant train that you're trying to destroy. I don't think this is my favorite track from the GameGear Sonic games - that would probably be Final Act from Sonic Chaos, which is in the first post and you should listen to if you haven't already - but this is probably my second favorite. It's pretty appropriate for the stage it plays in - as one of YouTube commenter pointed out, the "drums" sound a lot like a train, which is nice - and it's just a really fun track to listen to. Can't ask for much more than that. --- "There's a pony in the shop, but don't buy it. It might do something unfortunate to you." ~from the first Summoner's Seal topic |

| Level: 49 Liberal Arts Major | 02's Theme - Kirby 64: The Crystal Shards Surprise comment time since I ended up listening to this for a different reason so now I can comment on it. And while 02 isn't nearly as creepy, it's going to mess with you just as much, mainly because of the BGM. This is creepy? It is possibly the most "you're screwed" piece of music that I've ever heard. Wait, what? It even sort of psyches you out a couple times where you think it's going to stop building up and then, well, it just keeps going. I'm not seeing this at all. (If that didn't make sense, then I'll try to make it clearer: It starts building at 42 seconds, psyches you out a couple times in the :55-1:25 area, then keeps building at pays off at about 1:50. Or maybe I'm just nuts.) Yeah, definitely not seeing this. If anything, I'd say there's a noticeable change at about 1:28, and that the stretch from there to 1:50 shouldn't be considered as part of the 0:42 to 1:28 part really. (BTW, the 1:28 - 1:50 stretch is almost definitely my favorite part of the song, At 1:50 it goes downhill. It recovers later, but only after it's gone back to a different kind of sound.) --- xp1337: Don't you wish there was a spell-checker that told you when you a word out? |

| Level: 41 New Moderator | Underworld - Kid Icarus http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ENStkWiosK4 I really want to play Kid Icarus at some point. As it is, I'm psyched for the entry on the 3DS. Probably has something to do with me using Pit in Brawl (Marth is my first choice but Pit's very close). I did watch someone play the first level once and heard this piece. It's really catchy, I had fun listening to it. Underworld (Kid Icarus) - Super Smash Brothers Brawl http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dClKAO6QU6Q When I saw that Underworld was getting a remix for Brawl, I was excited to hear it, and for good reason. They did a great job with it. I also found it amusing that they managed to get the Grim Reaper's theme and the death theme mixed in; I'm not sure why they chose to do that, but it was funny to recognize. This is probably my personal favorite Brawl piece to listen to, though there are several I can think of that are higher quality. --- "That was pretty interesting. | Level: 49 Liberal Arts Major | Final Fantasy Tactics - Remnants http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j_KHMvuDzP8&fmt=18 Likely my second favorite FFT Battle Theme behind Antipyretic. Unlike Antipyretic, Remnants is much more "calm" song, IMO. I also think a large reason behind why I like it as much as I do is what I connect it with from the game. [Spoiler for FFT, click to show]For me, I associate this battle theme with the Ramza v Wiegraf duel. And as annoying as that battle can be if you walk into unprepared (especially if you save after Part I of the battle that leads into this, in which case you can't leave to prepare/grind/whatever), Wiegraf is definitely one of my favorite characters in FFT, so I enjoy this battle. </spoiler> My favorite part of the song is definitely from 46 seconds to 70 seconds, though the beginning is good too. --- xp1337: Don't you wish there was a spell-checker that told you when you a word out? |

| Level: 43 Editor | Dry Dry Desert Trek - Paper Mario http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V2HPGyWPzWw Paper Mario was one of the first RPGs I played, as odd as that might seem, and it sort of warped my expectations of what an RPG should be... but that's getting off-topic. I forget if Dry Dry Desert is Chapter 2 or 3, but it's really when Paper Mario picks up in terms of... well, difficulty, yeah, but also in terms of just being more exciting and interesting. It's sort of embarrassing to admit now, but the first time I reached Dry Dry Desert, it really intimidated me. I assume it was the combination of the wide expanse of desert with no real landmarks and, especially, this track, which manages to freak me out a little bit even now. I think I ended up having to mute the game and rush through as quickly as possible. Of course, nowadays, Dry Dry Desert is one of my favorite parts of the game, and I obviously like the music now, so it just goes to show you that... I dunno, kids are stupid or something. At least I was. --- "There's a pony in the shop, but don't buy it. It might do something unfortunate to you." ~from the first Summoner's Seal topic |

Calling - The World Ends With You http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1PR7eMdCkoQ I mentioned this earlier, but this is probably my favorite song from The World Ends With You. Deja Vu is the only thing that doesn't make that a certainty. I have to give serious props to The World Ends With You though. Deionarra is a ghostly apparition that claims she knows you and calls you her lover. Her theme really embodies the mystery surrounding her and hints at the sadness that her story entails. | Level: 49 Liberal Arts Major | Kingdom Hearts 2 Final Mix - The Other Promise http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KyrWRgg_6KE&fmt=18 Technically, I'm not counting this as KH2. But saying it's from KH 358/2 Days would be kind of wrong too, though I'm pretty sure that's the first time it's heard in a game that was released in NA. [Spoiler for Kingdom Hearts 2 Final Mix, and obviously for Kingdom Hearts 2, click to show]This is the battle theme that plays when Sora fights Roxas in the Station of Awakening after he enters The World That Never Was and reaches Memory's Skyscraper. In Kingdom Hearts 2, this fight doesn't happen, and Sora just wins in a cutscene. Which is enraging. Because I was looking forward to Sora v Roxas so much. And then that happened. Augh. Final Mix gives this a proper battle and an amazing battle theme. My second favorite in the series, only surpassed by one played near the end of 358/2 Days. </spoiler> The Other Promise also plays once in 358/2 Days, to my knowledge, but the scene it plays in is shorter than the song itself, so yeah. [Spoiler for Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days, click to show]And it doesn't even involve Roxas! It plays when Axel confronts Xion at the Twilight Town Manor. Now, IMO, 358/2 Days is pretty "meh" until the endgame, but the endgame is awesome. This scene is in that area, and since it has so little competition, just having The Other Promise probably makes it like my 2nd or 3rd favorite scene in the game. </spoiler> My favorite part is definitely from 86 seconds to 100 seconds, but the whole song is just incredible. --- xp1337: Don't you wish there was a spell-checker that told you when you a word out? |

| Level: 43 Editor | Simple and Clean - Kingdom Hearts http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UkS4AVfIxyo Since everyone else has been posting Kingdom Hearts music, I figured I'd get in on the fun, by posting... more Kingdom Hearts music! And it's doubly me being lazy, because this is a song that was already posted here! Luckily, everyone's here for the writeups, not the music, right, right? But seriously, I was thinking, "how can I justify doing Simple and Clean again", and it eventually dawned on me: hey, I can mix it with something else and do it on a Tuesday! Seamless. So yeah, I pretty much love Simple and Clean. Not just one of my favorite songs from a video game (even before playing Kingdom Hearts), but legitimately one of my favorite songs of all time. Actually, Simple and Clean and I go way back - back to before Kingdom Hearts was even released. There was a commercial for Kingdom Hearts that was pretty much just Simple and Clean playing over a montage of scenes from the game. No BS, no trying to be clever, no trying to be artsy - the commercial pretty much just said "this is Kingdom Hearts, and it is what it is", and Simple and Clean made it catch my attention every time it came on. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a_hCcsn1r8c I still consider this one of the best commercials for a video game ever made. Hikari Kingdom Orchestra - Kingdom Hearts http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CZVAvHah9io Anyway, while I do love Simple and Clean, I also enjoy the instrumental version of Hikari! I'm not sure what to say about it, because I really just file it with S&C/Hikari in my mind, but I will say that I definitely like the first minute or so the best. Probably my preference for slower, simpler music coming through there (though I think I've managed a good mix so far in this topic). Luckily, there is yet another version that is entirely like that part! Hikari (Instrumental) - Kingdom Hearts http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=47mODMsenyE&fmt=18 Awesome. I have no idea why this didn't turn up immediately when I was looking for the instrumental version of Hikari on YouTube the other day. | Level: 41 New Moderator | You guys can't have a Kingdom Hearts post-a-thon without the resident fangirl! Lazy Afternoons - Kingdom Hearts: Chain of Memories http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UkEEWcWV_D8 If this is the wrong link, I'll need someone else to tell me. It was the only stinking one I could find for Chain of Memories and I can't verify it on my lousy computer. I wouldn't have had this problem if I could have posted The 13th Struggle like I wanted! >=( >_> This is the theme for Twilight Town, one of my favorite Kingdom Hearts areas. I enjoy the theme itself, it fits the calm atmosphere Twilight Town has most of the time. Chain of Memories didn't have that many new pieces, but this is one that's worth hearing. Lazy Afternoons - Kingdom Hearts II http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aXLutt1tQ0E Here's the remix for Kingdom Hearts II, where Twilight Town plays a much bigger (and an awesome) role. | Level: 43 Editor | One-Winged Angel - Final Fantasy VII http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BTxhh1Ins5I So, during my writeup for Birth of a God (near the beginning of the topic) I said I didn't like One-Winged Angel very much and it wouldn't show up in this topic unless I ran really low on material. ... And here we are. But seriously, while I am getting a bit low on material, this is really here because the entire point of this topic originally was to be music from games I was currently playing, music I was currently listening to, music that was stuck in my head - that kind of spur of the moment thing. And, right now, this qualifies as that, so I might as well take advantage of it. There was a topic on Board 8 the other day about how there really hasn't been much memorable/iconic VG music since the jump to 3D. Which, I think is... pretty much entirely accurate. That said, there is one song that I'd say kills everything else from the post-3D era and could put up a fight against 90% of the iconic music from the pre-3D era, and that would be One-Winged Angel. To me it's not even close. This thing shows up in everything that can be vaguely tied to Sephiroth, even playing for the goddamn menu of Advent Children (rather than, say, the FFVII Main Theme). It's probably one of the most instantly recognizable pieces of VG music ever made, bar none. So, the post-3D era has that going for it, at least. Me, I just wait for the boring minute long intro to end and then for the song to get to "Veni, veni, venias" which is the only part I care to memorize enough to sing along to. <_< --- "There's a pony in the shop, but don't buy it. One-Winged Angel - Final Fantasy VII http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BTxhh1Ins5I I can sing the whole song. Yes really. Overall, it's okay. Doll Master - Threads of Fate http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hvaquaXG5nE I very recently acquired Threads of Fate thanks to a friend of mine and can't wait to finally play it. It's been a **** I've wanted to play for about seven years now thanks to someone telling me how much he enjoyed it. He gave me a few music pieces while talking about it, and this was one of them. I have no idea who this doll master is, but I assume it plays during a boss battle with him or her. And boy is it eerie. One of the most eerie boss themes I've come across, really. | Level: 43 Editor | Realm Overworld - Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5W_bFLwB0WY I didn't like Spirit Tracks nearly as much as its spiritual predecessor Phantom Hourglass, but one area it definitely improved on was music. Realm Overworld is usually touted as the best track in the entire game, and sometimes even as one of the best tracks in the entire series. And while it's good, I feel obligated to point out that if you play through Spirit Tracks, you're going to be listening to this track over and OVER and OVER and OVER and OVER, endlessly, for long stretches of time, throughout the entire game. If you thought Final Toccata was overplayed in Symphony of the Night, you are going to be in disbelief of how much you'll have listened to Realm Overworld by the time Spirit Tracks is over. And if you plan on 100%ing the game, well, 90% of that is done, guess where, on the overworld, so prepare to listen to this track for an additional several hours. God... I really just want to complain about it even more because Jesus Christ Nintendo but I think I'm just upset for other reasons and taking it out on the game/this writeup... So... I do like this track. I hate the first four seconds, probably because I had to hear it about a billion times but okay, no more complaining, for real this time. I like how parts of the piece are reminiscent of the sounds of a train, and I really like the part at 2 minutes 20 seconds where everything slows down for a while. I wish more of the piece was like that, honestly. Although maybe in-game it would have just made the ridiculously slow form of travel seem even more ridiculously slow. Incidentally, while I was listening to this track, a train came by. Now, that's not exactly an uncommon occurrence, seeing as how I live about a mile from a railroad, but still. How appropriate is that? - And with that (terrible) writeup, I am officially on hiatus for at least a week, maybe two weeks. This is for two reasons. 1) Week long family vacation, and while I might or might not have internet access, screw it, I'm not updating this thread during my vacation. And 2) I need some time to gather new material. So next update will be on the 9th, at the earliest. --- "There's a pony in the shop, but don't buy it. | Level: 49 Liberal Arts Major | I missed a day, etc. Final Fantasy IX - Silver Dragon http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MaQ9ppIpdsI&fmt=18 You know, the more I thought about it, the fewer songs I realized I liked from FFIX. FFVII, FFVIII, and FFX don't really have that problem. Granted, I probably almost could have guessed as much because FFIV aside, FFIX is my least favorite FF that I've played (and in fairness to FFIV, a lot of that is because it's been forever since I've played it, so I gave FFIX a pass and put it ahead for pretty much no reason.) FFIX has this song at least, which is pretty much my favorite with no serious competition (there are a handful of others I think are pretty good, but nothing on this tier.) Of course, I really wish this song was used more, instead of just in a cutscene towards the end of the game. But, oh well. I think by that point I was just pretty glad to be near the end. As for favorite parts, I'll break this up into two parts. I'll start off by saying I don't particularly care for the beginning. IMO, it starts getting better at about 36 seconds, but the part I really like is from about 83 seconds to 135 minutes. A lot of the parts in that section for whatever reason I feel are extremely similar to the very beginning of... [Spoiler for Final Fantasy X, click to show]Seymour Battle (the last one, obviously.) And I hold the opinion that the first like 15-20 seconds of Seymour Battle is amazing and that the entire rest of the song is an utter letdown. So yeah. </spoiler> --- Final Fantasy X - Someday The Dream Will End http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CQ42D7gORug&fmt=18 You know, I easily could have gone to FFX a long, long time ago, but since People of the North Pole had been taken, I kept not doing so because I kept going, "Damnit, that was the best FFX song so now I don't feel like going to FFX because anything else is just going to seem worse." Well, I guess I can try and end that with what I'd probably rank as the #2 FFX song. It's actually faintly amusing, because this plays in the area right after People of the North Pole, so my initial reaction to this song was "Hey wait! Bring back People of the North Pole!" But this really is a great song. It also has the benefit of playing constantly, overriding even the battle theme, something I wish happened for People of the North Pole. Anyways... [Spoiler for Final Fantasy X, click to show]This plays when you finally enter Zanarkand near the end of the game. In reality this should have been the end of the game. Because everything after Zanarkand completely fails to live up to the run-up to Zanarkand. Mt. Gagazet, Zanarkand, and Yunalesca back-to-back-to-back just isn't getting topped by anything else in FFX. Maybe if Sin/Jecht appeared right after Yunalesca it'd be okay, but then I'd just be saying it was part of that sequence. </spoiler> Anyway, I pretty much like all of this song (though I still do like some parts better than others), and instead of a favorite section, I'm going to try something slightly different. There's a sound effect that starts at about 26 seconds and that then repeats every 3 seconds or so for a while, and that's definitely my favorite aspect of the song. I feel like it should be easy for me to identify what that is, but I never can. --- xp1337: Don't you wish there was a spell-checker that told you when you a word out? |

| Level: 41 New Moderator | Victorian Fear - Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jB3xGxJ3zN4 Portrait of Ruin has a handful of good pieces, but I think this one is the most atmospheric. I'm not sure I'd say it's the best on the track, but it fits its area the best. This plays in a foggy town (looks a lot like London) with monsters waiting around to emerge from the ground to attack. It really amplifies the mood. That and it's just a nice track, I like listening to it even outside of the game. --- "That was pretty interesting. But dropping a warship on me is cheating... This is because SOTN has no bad tracks whatsoever. A masterpiece soundtrack for a masterpiece game, even if it is nearly impossible to die in it. --- "A man chooses. | Level: 41 New Moderator | Master of Shadow - Persona 3 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qA15VyDQJyQ Ah, technicalities. Since Heartful Cry was from Persona 3 FES, I can still put up a track from Persona 3, so here we are. Master of Shadow ranks as my second favorite battle theme in Persona 3 (first being BfES). I always got psyched up for a full moon boss just so I could hear this play again. I also like its beat, which is not too fast and goes well with the turned-based system of Persona 3. It has a bit of unusual noises used that gives it a foreign feeling, which I think goes well with the Shadows. I wind up listening to this a lot on my free time. --- "That was pretty interesting. | Level: 49 Liberal Arts Major | Final Fantasy VI - Edgar and Sabin's Theme http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QyPVit8Mveo&fmt=18 I have no idea why I stayed away from FFVI all this time, because it has some really awesome songs. It's kind of hard for me to pick a favorite too. This one is up there though. As the name says, it's the theme of Edgar and Sabin, and also plays at their castle, which is what I think of when I hear this. As for favorite parts, the whole song is great, but I'll give a special mention to 45 to 60 seconds. --- xp1337: Don't you wish there was a spell-checker that told you when you a word out? |

| Level: 41 New Moderator | Okay that surprised me, why did you listen to that one? Final Fantasy IX - Silver Dragon http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MaQ9ppIpdsI&fmt=18 Pro track is pro. I've always liked this one. Final Fantasy X - Someday The Dream Will End http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CQ42D7gORug&fmt=18 Having it continue to play during battles made it so much better ingame. I love this piece. Castlevania: Symphony of the Night - The entire OST http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PqVWGiKberA&feature=PlayList&p=A2305652DEF2EBE2&playnext_from=PL&index=1&playnext=1 Most of the soundtrack is very, very good, so I won't dispute this. There are a couple of pieces I could care less about, but other than that... Final Fantasy VI - Edgar and Sabin's Theme http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QyPVit8Mveo&fmt=18 This plays during your trip to a castle, so I maintain it falls under the 'all RPG castles must have awesome music' clause. Because it is awesome. --- "That was pretty interesting. But dropping a warship on me is cheating... Take it back!"-Id, Xenogears |
