Not quite an adjustment but the whole "skipped Stickerbush Symphony" is being treated like one. So again, the actual leaderboard pretends it happens here, page average and total averages will be correct.

Another page where it's just Kenri and I. This time we both increase, and personally I'm shocked I still did, albeit it was by less than a hundredth of a point. Next time though will probably see me have a decrease, because I never would have imagined Snow's Theme getting a 9.5 here. Or even an 8.0.

Page 13 continues the decline seen since the topic "peaked" on Page 9, with Page 13 ranking 7th of 13. However, again, that is more than enough to continue to raise the topic's average.
Aka - To the West

...I'm... I'm just going to ignore your write-up here, because it makes no sense to me. >_>

This is pretty good though, not exceptional, but a solid piece. I'll say 5.5, thanks to The Wall.

.hack//G.U. Vol 2//Reminisce - To You, My Dearest
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i5zyJQ62ZZA&fmt=18

***Warning, avoid the comment section at all costs. I couldn't find one that didn't spoil something but this one is the most vague, IMO, but still, avoid it if at all possible if you don't want to risk any level of spoilers. Sorry.***

Probably one of the sadder pieces I can think of off the top of my head, this piece is rather well done, IMO. I like how the piece very slowly builds up, and I especially like the vocal kind of effects that enter into the song as well towards the end. Those would probably constitute my favorite part, so let's say 1:11 - 1:57. I believe the song loops once in there, so just letting you know.
This is also probably the saddest part of the entire series for me. Alkaid became my favorite character over the course of Vol 2, and then this happens, and you arrive too late to do anything to help her.
Note: In the page average listing I tagged on a 0 for the 1-9 pages simply so they line up better with the 10+ pages. I tried over the past two leaderboards to see if I could just add a space to move it over and line it up, but it didn't work, at least for me, but this should. And if, by chance, all this lining up stuff looks like a mess to everyone but me, I apologize for it.

Finally a page without just me and Kenri. GameCobra make a strong surge on Page 14, increasing by nearly a quarter of a point. Meanwhile, Epyon's average just implodes, dropping by over four-tenths of a point. Neither change results in a position switch however. Kenri increases a little, and I finally have a fractional decrease, even if it is by less than half of a hundredth of a point.

Page 14 still continues the overall decline, coming in just under Page 13, and ends up as 8th place of the 14 pages, with that downward trend finally placing songs in the bottom half of all pages. However, that still doesn't keep the page from increasing the topic's average.
And now that I am finally, finally caught up... time to celebrate a new month by posting this! (It is totally still July 1st regardless of what The Flux Net says.)

The Heart Speaks - Ar tonelico II: Melody of Metafalica
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l-AxZ7fOBTc

**WARNING: I have been told that comments and lyric translations would be huge spoilers for this. Do what I always do and do not look at them.**

It should be no secret I love hymns from Ar tonelico. This is not a hymn, but it is in the same language of the hymns and is just as beautiful. The reason this is not a hymn is because it is also sung by a male, and there are no males who can sing hymns, as the game makes perfectly clear. I regret how overlooked male songs are in video games, while female ones are beautiful, male singers are great too. Having two of them in this is just fantastic. It makes my heart ache to hear them. I have an inkling it is a song about love from the way they are singing together, but without translations, I obviously cannot confirm. It makes it all the sweeter to me.

I am going to include rankings for my own pieces when I post them, just to make it easier for Kenri to spread sheet tally, even if it seems a bit vain. Sorry about that, but I hope it works.

Now to respond to comments!

Not really my explanation, just one I've heard. I don't particularly buy into it either. Glad you thought it was okay overall though. <_<

Definitely did. =)

You know, throughout this entire topic series, the most baffling part of it for me personally has been the reception of Dominance. It's like, okay, E1M6 The Cathedral and Conversation 1, if somebody doesn't like those I'm not particularly surprised, even if I think they're fantastic. Even I wouldn't say Conversation 1 has a ton of technical merit or anything.

...Dominance though, I honestly feel like that's probably one of my technically strongest pieces in the entire topic. Like, top 5, at least. <_<

I am no music expert. It might be masterfully made and I just do not recognize the genius. It was strictly average in my opinion.

Ha, that's the kind of stuff I enjoy in music! Not the only thing I enjoy, obviously, but yeah.

I despise jump music. One of my least favorite types.

Nah, I get this. It honestly goes back and forth for me between being really good and just being sorta grating. Depending on my mood, I guess.

Fair.

Never mind, THIS is what baffles me the most about this topic series. <_<

Hah! I win! ...Somewhat.

Yes. It is in fact all of those things. >_>

Anyway, I am exceedingly pleased that Conversation 1 managed a 6.5, because at least this doesn't drop its average at all. (This is how low my standards have become.)

How does that... ...oh well. And 6.5 is pretty good, I like anything that gets above average to some extent!

Rufus Shinra > Disc 1 Sephiroth >= Fan-Theory Jenova that got derailed by Square > All other antagonists in FFVII

I'd put the rest of Shinra above Disc 1 Sephiroth if they even count, it's hard to say.

Everything about EXEC_SPHILIA is utterly amazing.

Sounds right!

From what I've heard from Chrono Cross, I'd say it's downhill from those two, but still very good in a lot of places. Dreams of the Shore and Scars of Time are my 2 favorites though.

Edit: Except for Radical Dreamers, of course. Obviously I would forget my favorite Chrono Cross song in this post.

Mm, well, I'd still look.

Assuming we're thinking of the same section, that's the beginning of Here I Come's god-tier section. That section, which also includes the vocals for me, might be 10/10 tier by itself, or high 9.5 at worse. Rest of the song is what brings it down!

As good as the rest of the piece is, I have to agree that that one section alone is superior.

...Ouch. Not EXEC_SPHILIA, because I agree that's the best vocal performance, but I'd take the vocal performance in RE=NATION over PURGER/Misha, personally.

Not me, I'm afraid.

Ouch again. =(

8.5 is a good score!

Well, the day I was telling you about .hack songs was a day where you were putting restrictions on my ideas. I might have actually mentioned Full Force by name in a "Wish I could show you this" sense because it's really Here I Come's biggest competition in .hack, IMO. Maybe Gentle Hands too.

Yeah, I only wanted 'facing friends' pieces, so that makes sense.

Yes, that part is absolutely amazing. Really, all of Full Force is, it's just such a great piece. The only reason I say it doesn't blow Here I Come out of the water is Here I Come's best part is just so beyond the impossible amazing.

Agreed.

That's why you have to play it! To find out!

Once I actually get them all...

It's that one section, I'm telling you! Here I Come knocks it out of the park so much with that section that it stands out so well in spite of its weaker sections. Location of Power is more consistent, but Here I Come peaks off the charts more or less.

Correct.

Absolutely. Like I was saying in my write-up today/yesterday, I think NieR might be the best soundtrack I've ever heard. It's just so incredible.

That's high praise!

I am totally in support of this.

It seems to only be around $20 on Amazon, which makes me pleased.

Higher than I expected!

It all boiled down to average.

See! I don't break out the HYPE machine for nothing! I break it out when it is legitimately deserved!

Apparently so.

Okay now, hold up here, this write-up was going so well, don't derail it now!

I will derail anything for Passion!

=(

You posted it, be happy. >_> <_<

Sounds like to me you're trying to diminish the greatness of what DORCHADAS just accomplished by trying to defeat it with context! >_>

Obviously not or it wouldn't have gotten a ten. >_>

YES! MISSION ACCOMPLISHED!

...It's a good thing, too! Because DORCHADAS was pretty much my last opportunity to have a chance for it, I think!

You never know what will show up in the future.

But this isn't why! I place RE=NATION over IMPLANTER because it's superior!

See? Silly silly xp. =)

'There' sounds like a scary place!

There is an awesome place!

This always comes off to me sounding funny because it seems to me like it's implying that EXEC_SPHILIA and EXEC_RIG=VEDA had different vocalists and not, in fact, the exact same one!

But she sings differently in them.

Notes: Same deal regarding missed songs as before. What this does is help out Page 5 a bit, it's still the lowest rated page, but anything helps. Page 3, however, drops from the 3rd highest rated page to 7th place (and then the addition of Page 15 drops it to 8th place)

Note 2: This does not include The Heart Speaks or anything past the Spoiler Tagged Page 15 stuff.

Note 3: I am coming to the conclusion that the "Revised" Page 3 average was incorrect, and that adjustment to Passion... I counted twice... or something. Somehow I effectively credited the page 1 point instead of .5. And as far as I can tell, there's nothing outside of Passion that got adjusted. It should be okay now though.

So, the Final Leaderboard was the most difficult leaderboard for me to handle, seriously those notes and the missing songs and adjustments can be a bit annoying to deal with. I had noted to myself almost every time that I should have kept on hand a few other stats just to make things easier for future updates, but kept telling myself I didn't really need them. Sure would have helped out a lot here. Oh well.

Technically, only Kenri and I had songs here again, at least as far as the leaderboard is concerned, and we both increased. The parenthetical things note the missing song adjustments too, and CG7 barely increases (the second time my calculator broke out the #.####e-4 notation). GameCobra also drops just a little.

Page 15 puts a halt to the downward trend and ends up 3rd of all pages, still falling short of Pages 9 and 10. Again, obviously this brings the topic's total average up.

Star Fox Command - Heroes of Old, Peppy Hare and James McCloud
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GXreb6mmDUA&hd=1

that is a long title. longer than necessary.

So one of the coolest things Star Fox Command did was, during one of its What If? storylines, allow you to play as James McCloud - who, for those not in the know, died prior to the first Star Fox game, very sad, etc. He's a pretty cool guy, Peppy's a pretty cool guy too, and they've got a pretty cool theme song.

...I think I'm heading back to the "marching band" well with this one; not sure why, but it's always made me think of a marching band, and that's something I tend to like in music, at least every now and then. I think that, from marching band, I make a mental leap to like... disciplined military, and from there to the idea of an "old guard", which is appropriate, because within the Star Fox universe, James and Peppy are definitely members of the old guard. So, beyond just liking this piece, to me it works quite well as a theme for those particular characters.

Star Fox Command - Heroes of Old, Peppy Hare and James McCloud

Wait, a game lets you play as James? That is quite cool.

I can absolutely see the connection Kenri made to a marching band. This has a patriotic feel in my mind. From what I know of James and Peppy, this atmosphere seems to fit them. As for how well it works on its own, I think it is a decent enough piece, but I feel like it is missing a section. As in, it feels like it is building up to something but never has a section to address it, if that makes any sense. I like it for what it does, just wish it did more.

The Heart Speaks - Ar tonelico II: Melody of Metafalica

Man, of all the "hymns" from Ar tonelico II (or I), this? This is arguably the weakest, IMO. The male vocals are not a credit to the team here. I mean, in context, sure. Out of it? ...Not so much. Definitely the weakest of all hymns, it's really more of a question of "Is it weaker than the non-hymns in this topic." ...And honestly, I'd probably say yes. Let's say 6.5.

Star Fox Command - Heroes of Old, Peppy Hare and James McCloud

This starts out okay, but then kind of loses me for most of the middle. I'll say 5.0 though.

.hack//G.U. Vol 1//Rebirth - Victory Must Be Grasped
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o0i742z07xI&fmt=18

I view this as kind of the "Major Boss Battle" theme of G.U. There is another Boss Battle Theme, which is also great, but I'm pretty sure this one is held back for the bigger battles. Anywhere, there's this one effect kind of in the background that I really like, and it might be some kind of electric guitar type of thing, but I feel really uncomfortable saying that, because I have a feeling that's not it, although when the music shifts into my favorite part, where a lot of the instruments stop and you get vocal effects at 0:44 - 1:16. It sounds like that effect could be an electric guitar or something hearing it fade out like that. Either way, I also like the percussion here, overall another solid piece, IMO.

Le Ali Del Principio - Baten Kaitos: Origins
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lz-jFRuvA2o&fmt=18

I posted a Baten Kaitos piece some time ago, but not an Origins one. This is apparently the final boss theme, and what an unusual yet beautiful one it is. The annotations for this video explain that the composer's nine year old daughter sang this piece, and she sounds lovely doing so. This is also apparently in Italian, which startled me. It may be my bias for vocals, but I think this is beautiful, truly.

Yu-Gi-Oh! Reshef of Destruction - Duel Music
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jxQ5QmHxSbQ&hd=1

So I used to play Yu-Gi-Oh a lot. I think most people here probably know that about me, but if not, there ya go. I think I stopped playing just before this game was released, which is good, because if I hadn't I WOULD have bought it, and I hear it's awful. But it has a surprisingly good soundtrack, much better than you'd expect a YGO game's soundtrack to be, and much better than most other YGO game soundtracks are.

This is definitely my favorite track that I've heard, which I guess would be good for me if I ever played this game for whatever godforsaken reason, because it seems to be the generic duel theme. I dunno, it feels way too climactic/unique to be a generic theme like that, at least to me. The intro, or rather the first 40 seconds, is my favorite part; after that it becomes less good fast, but I really dig the first half of the song.

wtf is a reshef, anyway?

.hack//G.U. Vol 1//Rebirth - Victory Must Be Grasped

Sure is .hack in here!

I think it sounds sort of like an electric guitar too, but it is hard to declare what that instrument it. I definitely like how all of the effects sound together, it really is a well put together piece. I would also like to note that this has an introduction that I actually like, rather than simply being okay with it. That is sort of rare with the ten second or so intros that some pieces have. So props to it for that. Not quite as good as phase themes, but very close.

Yu-Gi-Oh! Reshef of Destruction - Duel Music

According to a quick Google search, Reshef is an Egyptian god of war. That is incredibly stupid phrasing then, it makes it sound like Reshef is an object!

Honestly, I am not getting the climatic feeling Kenri is talking about. The wind instrument is sort of interesting, I like that part. The rest actually feels rather generic to me, but that one instrument makes it different enough. That said, Yu-Gi-Oh themes in games were never really that strong, and this one isn't either.

The Burden - Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O82Hc_dMehA&fmt=18

This one will be a hit or miss is my guess. Unlike Price of Freedom, which has traits that anyone would most likely enjoy, this is a prominent violin piece. Some parts near the end get a bit high pitched, which is unfortunate, I have a hard time with high pitched parts. That aside, it is very moving. I am posting it because of how sorrowful it makes me feel to hear it. I personally believe it is very lovely even if it is short and has a questionable last few seconds.

Le Ali Del Principio - Baten Kaitos: Origins

This is pretty good, not sure if I'd start throwing out terms like great, but... let's go with... 7.0.

Yu-Gi-Oh! Reshef of Destruction - Duel Music

Well then. I'm not sure what to make of this. Especially when I combine you saying this is a good soundtrack, and then the best song (or your favorite, whatever). Because really? This is like a 4.0.

The Burden - Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII

And this... isn't really anything special, IMO. Really, that violin probably drags it down to some extent, but I'm not positive on that because I'm not sure if the piano part could carry the piece by itself. Let's go with 5.0.

Touhou Project: Perfect Cherry Blossom - Necrofantasia
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2vjZ1SPAH6g&fmt=18

So, to my knowledge, Necrofantasia is the boss theme for the final bonus boss of Perfect Cherry Blossom, and actually a remix of the penultimate bonus boss's theme. Of the two, I definitely prefer Necrofantasia. I just like most of what Necrofantasia does. My favorite part would probably be 1:12 - 2:46. There's also this effect at about 1:22 that I really like, but I'm not sure how to describe. It happens multiple times throughout the piece as well.

Scott Pilgrim vs. The World - Another Winter
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1WpzCiLIiCo&hd=1

Just got knocked out of the VGMC5, so I figured now was a good time to post it here! Had been wanting to for a while, basically since I first heard it.

To me, this is how you do fast music right. Really, it's not even that I dislike fast music in general, I just tend to prefer slower music. Anyway, that's not really relevant here. I think what drew me to this initially was its combination of "real" instruments with more chiptune-esque effects; it's not something that sounds like a good idea on paper, but it works surprisingly well. I also really like the first 10 seconds and all similar sections; while the entire song is good, that part especially just really catches my attention.

Another Winter is pretty good, yes. Still not "getting" your write-up, but that's pretty typical for me! I'll say 6.0

NieR - The Ultimate Weapon
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lhSZcD1hgt4&fmt=18

I actually waver back and forth on the vocals here. At times I think they're the "weakest" part of the song, but then, at others, I feel like the song wouldn't be nearly as good if you just took them out. It really depends on what part of the song we're talking about. I still like the vocals overall though. Obviously, given that lead in, I most definitely enjoy the piano and percussion in the song, it's just... I don't know if they could carry the entire song as well as they can with the vocals there too. As for my favorite part of the song, it's basically anywhere the song is faster, as not only is that where I feel most of the effects work their best, it's where I also think the vocals are the best. By contrast, it's in the slower parts where I kind of question whether the song would be stronger with or without vocals. For reference, the parts I mean are the ones like at 1:48 - 2:24. I also like how the song builds itself up, for example, the drums don't enter the song until that section I mention, but then stick around the whole rest of the song, even when it goes back to the "slower" parts. I also like the "fading out" effect towards the very end of the song at around 4:17 - End, though I'd state that while I find it pretty neat, I don't like it as much as the faster parts, just felt it was worth mentioning.
This is also a pretty cool song to listen to as you fight your way through the sublevels of Emil's Mansion. It's also when the title begins to make sense, as you realize that The Ultimate Weapon is Emil's sister (and later, Emil himself kind of. I think. I'm still not 100% sure on all of that.)
Vein of Grief - Drakengard 2
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ktjOpTqeQdcfmt=18

I have a pretty good guess at what the reactions to this piece will be. It will probably have a well received introduction and then the rest of it will make it fall in rating for others. As for me? I like the whole thing. It sounds sort of insane, yet the combination of instruments, to me, is very cool. I have no idea where this plays, it would be interesting to find out. As it is, I really like the small bursts of vocals and how the rest of the instruments combine.

With you so far.

and then the rest of it will make it fall in rating for others.

...Tough call. Whenever it gets back to the style that reminds me of the opening this is not true. Whenever it is not doing that, it is absolutely true. So I guess that's a technical agree in that the rest of it can't possibly keep up with the opening.

I'll say 6.0, but man, that opening. It's not quite Excellen's Theme tier in that kind of "oh man, what could have been", but...

Xenosaga II - The Image Theme of Xenosaga II
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m_DU_bxJ_Fg&fmt=18

Fun Fact: I don't think this ever plays in-game. At least not like this. In reality, I believe the song is a fusion of the... title screen, I think... and obviously Fatal Fight.

Anyway, while it's no Communication Breakdown, this might be my second favorite from Xenosaga II, though admittedly, the competition isn't insanely strong like in Xenosaga III. I think my favorite part is the Fatal Fight part at 0:52 - 2:26. However I also really like the "slower" parts. Really, I'm not entirely sure which part I like more, because I really like the non-Fatal Fight part as well, I also think it handles the transitions between the two parts very well, which is a plus.

Broken Balance - Eternal Sonata
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EeW875akq6Yfmt=18

I have never checked out Eternal Sonata's OST until now, though I do own the 360 version of this game. It has some awesome pieces, I really want to play it now to hear the whole thing in context. As for this one, I'm probably in the minority with this being one of my favorites out of what I heard. Everyone seems to love Leap the Precipice, and while I like it too, the strings in this piece are AMAZING. I never thought I would be so biased to string instruments, but this topic series has really proven I am. Also, the short sections of 'vocals' are good additions. I wouldn't be surprised if I found other pieces later that might rank above this, but dang, this is good.

Elebits: The Adventures of Kai and Zero - Infinity of Our Love (Japanese ver.)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YG2VPnizwvk&hd=1

Try to try...

So during my Elebits playthrough, I said I liked the game and would play a sequel. A sequel was released, and I... did not play it! Oh, me.

Like Elebits before it, it has a cool vocal song, except I think I actually like Infinity of Our Love more than Smile of You. Really, this song just fires on a lot of the right cylinders to endear itself to me; the vocalist really has a lovely voice and the... rhythm, I guess you could say, that she keeps while singing this, makes it quite memorable to me. I also like the instrumentation; it's kind of simple, but I think that works here, and I really like that effect at for example 21 seconds.

Oh, and like with Smile of You, there's also this:

Elebits: The Adventures of Kai and Zero - Infinity of Our Love (English ver.)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xpsqg42o8ak&hd=1

It's written in the stars...

Don't like this one as much, but hey, might as well post it! AGAIN, like with Smile of You, the lyrics here are pure saccharine, but I don't think they're as good as Smile of You's. I actually don't like them very much, but the song itself is still sung pretty well and all.

Just for the record, these both appear in some Pop'n Music game, and I don't know if they're changed at all for that, and if they are, I'm honestly not sure if I accidentally linked to one of those versions, because these songs are tricky to find on YouTube and I've never played the game myself. But I think both these links are right.

Archer, the Hero Who Nobody Knows - Fate/Extra
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tIkp-roj3Mc&fmt=18

Well I'll be darned. I had no idea Fate/Extra was an RPG despite owning the game. Mind you, now that it's been confirmed to get a North America release, I'm waiting for that to come out instead of struggling with the Japanese version. Anyhow, this piece is great. Makes sense that Archer would get an awesome theme. I love the techno feel to it. Apparently this game takes place in a virtual world or something, which makes the atmosphere from this piece fitting. The piano of course wins me over too. It's sort of hard to explain why I like this so much, but wow, I really do.

Touhou Project: Perfect Cherry Blossom - Necrofantasia

Inferior to Necro-Fantasy imoooooo.

Well, you know me by now. It's rare for me to ever find a Touhou piece I don't love. This one is not as absolutely high as some, but it's still good. Section 1:13-1:59 is amazing and if there was more of it than the long first section that I'm not quite as fond of, it'd get higher. I also like the section after it. I mean, overall yes, it is quite good. That section is just so good that I wish there was more of it (which is incidentally why I prefer Necro-Fantasy).

Scott Pilgrim vs. The World - Another Winter

So I have heard of this so many times yet I still have no idea what Scott Pilgrim vs. the World is about.

This is... interesting. I sort of get what Kenri means by the chiptunes mixed with the real instruments, and I definitely see why it would be called fast paced. The rest... well, it's okay, but it really does not go far above average for me. I like a few of the sound effects, and the rest manages to stay at average, so that's nice at least.

NieR - The Ultimate Weapon

Somewhere Kenri is crying.

I was floored by the vocals and piano combination. This is absolutely beautiful to me. It gets another layer with the vocals added later and just stays fantastic throughout. From what xp has posted, this is my second favorite NieR track, and that's only because Song of the Ancients/Fate is so good. Heck it's so close they're getting the same score. I wrestled with a 9 for a while, but the powerfulness of this piece made me go with a bit higher of a score. This moves me emotionally and that is always a good thing in my book.

Rating: 9.5/10

Xenosaga II - The Image Theme of Xenosaga

Apparently I heard both sections of this piece before stopping, but my memory is so shoddy from a game I last played in 2006 that I don't remember it at all. Oh well.

More nice vocals! This is not Communication Breakdown level, as xp said, but this has a lot of good traits to it for me. I could see this being a love or hate song. I'm on the love side. A couple of sections are slower paced and I do not think quite as fondly of those, but they are not bad. I just prefer the fast vocals.

Elebits: The Adventures of Kai and Zero - Infinity of Our Love (Japanese ver.)

I really liked Smile of You, so let's see how this fares.

This is good too! It does everything I liked from Smile of You and manages to make itself just as well liked by me. I must be a huge sucker for these pieces, they get such high scores from me without me being able to explain why I think they are so good or why I like them as much as I do. Yet here we are.

Rating: 8.5/10

Elebits: The Adventures of Kai and Zero - Infinity of Our Love (English ver.)

Going to agree that this is not quite as good as the Japanese version. No real surprise there, I guess. But it still has a good vocalist and I actually like the lyrics. "It's written in the stars to be just who you are" is really nice, to the point that it has just propelled itself to the same ranking as the Japanese version despite me liking that vocalist a bit more.

Rating: 8.5/10
