| Level: 43 Editor | Melty Blood: Actress Again - Kara no Kyoukai (Theme of Shiki Ryougi) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cWiOriY6gBc&hd=1 Shamelessly stolen from VGMotD. It's a cool song, though, and I'd have never found it on my own, so I don't feel bad. Kara no Kyoukai is kind of weird in that it psyches you out about the direction it's going in a couple times, first at the very beginning, then again when think it's picked something and is going to stick with it and then WHAM weird vocals, which somehow completely change the song even though pretty much everything else stays the same. That one section of vocals is really good though, and it would be easy to say that the whole song should be like that, but I think it's actually better this way -- more unique. Also, apparently this is a remix of a song written by Yuki Kajiura. Are you surprised? I'm not really surprised. --- "You're childish. What are you getting? Are you getting strawberry? Ha! That's such a childish flavor, only children eat strawberry." |

| Level: 43 Editor | Sol Survivor - Oil and Sweat http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oVpsdimPoPY&hd=1 Guys machinery noises did you know I like this? This song is really long but it also has machinery noises!!! The best kind of long. Really though, it probably says something about how much I like this song that I can even tolerate it, much less really like it, for over 9 minutes. It certainly helps that it has a lot of elements I like (piano MACHINERY NOISES piano); it also helps that it kind of reminds me of the Frozen Synapse and Neotokyo soundtracks. But mostly I think it just manages to stay really good and really interesting the whole time (maybe because it's really three tracks on the soundtrack?). It builds in intensity and complexity as it goes, and also varies how prominent the machinery noises are, allowing for sections where they even seem to just disappear into the background music. All in all, a really cool song, and one of my favorites at this length. --- "You're childish. What are you getting? Are you getting strawberry? Ha! That's such a childish flavor, only children eat strawberry." |

| Level: 43 Editor | Bastion - The Mancer's Dilemma http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h7LBbstByzE&hd=1 I know a lot of people think Bastion's soundtrack is incredible, but honestly I don't think it's that great. Most of it works really well in-game, less so outside of it. There are two tracks I do like, though. This is one. I think it plays during the game's later levels, if I'm remembering correctly. The Mancer's Dilemma is interesting because it manages to get a really dramatic sound out of relatively slow piano work. It isn't action-packed by any means, but it definitely helps create an air of tension, which works amazingly well in-game and just about as well out of it. I don't think the song holds up quite as well during the one section about halfway through without the leading piano, though it does work pretty well to break the song up. I just feel like it doesn't quite keep up the same tone as the rest of the piece, so it could have been handled better in that regard. --- "You're childish. What are you getting? Are you getting strawberry? Ha! That's such a childish flavor, only children eat strawberry." |

| Level: 43 Editor | Create - Ambient Adventure http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lyduqdKbGSw&hd=1 A really cool electronic song from a game that's apparently pretty bad? Not sure, but that's not really relevant here anyway. Ambient Adventure - which isn't really ambient or an adventure, so minus points there - uses a lot of odd effects that I think I'd normally dislike, but they work quite well here. At the very least, those effect make me think of an explosion of various stuff, which is appropriate if that picture is anything to go by. I do feel like the song loses a bit of focus after the first three minutes, though; it's still good, but somewhat less coherent. --- "You're childish. What are you getting? Are you getting strawberry? Ha! That's such a childish flavor, only children eat strawberry." |

| Level: 43 Editor | Sword of Vermilion - Statts http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y7GQ0L3hiNQ&hd=1 azuarc recently did a ranking topic on Board 8 -- a kind of unusual one where the board collectively ranked 100 of his favorite songs. I contributed about 60 or 70 rankings, and this might have been the biggest surprise for me. It's not a song I'd place as being from a JRPG, at least not a medieval themed one. As I said in his topic, it has a nice strong beat, which I really like, but mixes that with chimes and other samples to create a more mysterious atmosphere, in a combination I don't think I've ever really heard before. And it works. Very cool song, and one I really like the simplicity of. --- "You're childish. What are you getting? Are you getting strawberry? Ha! | Level: 41 New Moderator | So. I did a fair amount of write ups a while ago and never posted them. I am doing so now. In addition, I will be rating all the Tales of Vesperia tracks since I beat the game/did a lot of after game stuff, and I will be doing three other tracks of Kenri's for a topic we are doing. - BlazBlue: Continuum Shift - Sword of Doom DOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOM. Okay, another pretty good BlazBlue track. I really am liking these more than Guilty Gear's. The vocals are nice without dominating the piece. They blend together pretty well with the music. Maybe it is a bit long, but it did not bother me, personally. Rating: 6.5/10 World Reborn - Title Theme Maybe they should have tried naming their game something different. I prefer the later part to the introduction. It gets better as it goes on. Nothing stands out as incredibly special, but we may have the DS quality to blame for that. Hard to say. At least I can say that music from an unreleased game is better than music in some released games. Or something. Rating: 5.5/10 Suikoden II - Gothic Neclord Battle I like how there are probably more Suikoden characters than there are actual tracks in the games. That effect, sort of like an electric organ or something (I AM GOOD AT INSTRUMENTS) is neat as heck. It carries this almost all by itself. The slack is brought up with the good beat. I am usually fairly easy to please with battle themes, and this is no exception. I assume this is for a character battle, judging by the game title, but it would work for a war map if those exist in this game. Not sure if 3 introduced those. Rating: 6.5/10 Radiant Historia - An Earnest Desire of Grey Gimme my reprint already. To absolutely nobody's surprise, I love another Radiant Historia track. The strings here are especially remarkable, with the organ helping. I like the loud and soft portions about equally, they support each other well. I still prefer Blue Radiance to this, but it might beat out Edge of Green and Red Locust. Maybe. They are all so awesome that it is hard to say. Rating: 8/10 SimCity 4 - By the Bay Kenri and his darned Sims music. So what is with the creators of this soundtrack making their pieces six minutes long? It gets obnoxious. I have a tolerance for long tracks when I like them, but this, not so much. It has this one cool section that stood out and literally nothing else I can remember. Awesome. Rating: 4/10 Apocalypse - Control (Apocalypse Remix) Lyrics about chess pieces, surely this must be good. Well forget that idea. This is a vocal song that I actually do not like much at all. Good work in managing that, Kenri. The vocalist does not appeal, the background music is boring and forgettable, and other than a few lyrics I like, nothing really redeems this. Oh, and those clips? I know they are not part of the song, but I feel like saying "screw them" anyway. Rating: 3.5/10 Professor Layton and the Unwound Future - Theme of Last Time Travel A true gentleman leaves no track unrated. Yes, the strings are absolutely the best part of this, though really it is good overall. That, uh, accordion?, is also pretty pro. I prefer the first part to the second though. I like this track a lot, but take that with a grain of salt. I am, after all, a big Layton fangirl. This is actually the next game I need to play in the series, and I am looking forward to it. Rating: 6.5/10 Street Fighter IV - Theme of Sakura I was actually planning on posting this, but oh well, I deserve it for waiting this long. The string section at the beginning is my favorite. There are a lot of cool effects in this track though. The pacing makes me think it would be great for a fighting game, though I have never played Street Fighter IV so I find it hard to comment there. Even if the introduction is the best part, the rest still stays strong. Rating: 6.5/10 Legend of Mana - Song of Mana ~ Ending Theme Shimomura alert, prepare a high ranking. Swedish lyrics? That is pretty unusual for video game music. I like it though, as I like most lyrics. Kenri is absolutely right in the faster portion being the better section. That one noise, which sounds sort of like a shaker, adds a good background for it too. The wind instruments are also appreciated. I also agree with Kenri that songs with vocals are generally not troublesome in length, and I felt the length of this one was fine. I probably would not have guessed Shimomura did this, as xp and Kenri mentioned. Rating: 7/10 Digital: A Love Story - Paper Dolls Hey look something I heard in the dual ranking topic. It seems this is the favorite track from Digital: A Love Story. Maybe there is not much out there better than it in the game. I could not say because I have only heard three, though one I liked more than this. None of them appealed to me as majorly as I thought they might though. This one seems all over the place, and while the middle section is fairly good at points, it never endears itself to me strongly. Rating: 5.5/10 Eternal Daughter - Brownie Forest Now I want a cupcake. Okay, so this. This has such fake saxophones that I really did not mind it. But at the same time, nothing stood out at all. So whatever. Also those birds chirping in the middle were argh worthy, but not ARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRGH worthy, like the seagull track. Darn the seagull track. Thankfully those birds go away pretty fast, so it manages to stay around average. Rating: 5/10 Mass Effect - M4 Part 2 Is there a part one or is it just a fancy name? This makes nice background music. I was literally doing something else the entire time I listened to it and found that just about nothing seemed to change, but that it kept going well. The vocals are interesting, I am not particularly inclined to them but I think they serve a good purpose here, and I like them well enough. No strong feelings for the track, though I lean higher rather than lower on the full scale. Rating: 5.5/10 Baten Kaitos: Eternal Wings and the Lost Ocean - To the End of the Journey of Glittering Stars Oh come on, Baten Kaitos has some decent music! As the name implies, this is pretty. I get more of an "awe" emotion from it than "tragic" but whatever. Emotion in general does not come strongly to me for this one. Still, do like this, for what it is worth. Maybe it plays at the end of a journey that has glittering stars? Just a thought. Rating: 6/10 BlazBlue: Continuum Shift - Nightmare Fiction Hazama theme, should I expect trolling? This is actually something I like about BlazBlue and wish more fighting games would do. Having special themes for certain characters fighting is cool. Digimon Rumble Arena sort of did something similar and I liked it there too. Anyhow, this is not as good as some of the BlazBlue tracks that have already been posted, but it is still good. The reasons are similar to what xp mentioned. Rating: 6/10 - The other two parts I mentioned will come shortly. --- "That was pretty interesting. But dropping a warship on me is cheating... Take it back!"-Id, Xenogears |

| Level: 41 New Moderator | Fury Sparks - Tales of Vesperia It seems like tracks with Spark in the title are pretty good ones. I also am unsure if I would call this my favorite battle theme, but it is still pretty awesome. It feels energy packed and has a more upbeat mood, which works for the fact that it is versus a rival, not an enemy. (Kenri might argue this point but you get what I am saying.) He mentioned in his write up that Flynn interrupts your Mystic Arte with his. I found this out the 'hard' way... except that his Mystic Arte does less damage than his normal attacks, so whatever, lolz. Rating: 7.5/10 Ring a Bell - Tales of Vesperia Oh look one of my most favorite songs ever. So, true story. Every time I started up Tales of Vesperia, I watched the introduction. I played at least once a night for over two months. I plan on continuing to do this when I return home and continue playing for completion. That opening is one of my favorite openings ever and a lot of it has to do with this song. It is beautiful, I really like the lyrics (yeah laugh all you want), and it appeals to me in so many ways. The full version is fantastic, but there is one thing that I prefer about the shorter piece. It has this one section where Raven is fighting in the intro, and that section of the music is different, sort of compacted, when compared to the full version. I love that section, so it is too bad it cannot be here. Having four minutes of greatness over one and a half makes up for it, at least. Rating: 10/10 Kane wo Narashite - Tales of Vesperia Awesome name is awesome. (Japanese makes stuff sound cooler, always remember that kids.) I am nowhere near as familiar with this version as I am to Ring a Bell. It is the same singer and same instrumentals, so the only lacking part is that, as Kenri said, it cannot be easily sung along with. I do not hold that against the song, so it gets the same rating from me. But I prefer the English version a little bit because of that. Rating: 10/10 Tales of Vesperia - A Wavering Taboo Very, very distant cousin of It Can Waver and Fight. Odd name for a forest dungeon theme aside... I like this one a lot. Tales of Vesperia has a lot of good dungeon themes, and this is one of the best ones. I mean, you can only go so far with a rating when it comes to peaceful atmospheric music like this, but it does not change the fact I enjoy it. Rating: 7/10 Tragic Resolution - Tales of Vesperia That... organ? Odd choice for a favorite piece from Tales of Vesperia. Then again, it is Kenri. *Insert appropriate laugh track* I like it, it just does nothing to really stand out. Makes for good cutscene background music to add to the feelings of the situation, and... well, okay, a few parts are good enough that I would listen to it on its own. But not that many. Rating: 6.5/10 Tales of Vesperia - Resolution of the People Gee I wonder if I will like this one. With this being a remix of Ring a Bell and me loving Ring a Bell... Yeah, shock of shocks. But it is great. Like, one of the best tracks in the game great. Really works when it plays, and I would gladly listen to it out of the game. It has a cool title too. Insert many other compliments here. Rating: 9/10 Radiant Life Fostering Light - Tales of Vesperia What the heck kind of a name is that? Yeah, this is a good dungeon theme, nothing fantastic but I like it. I never thought of it as a beach theme until Kenri mentioned it. Now it feels absolutely like it should be one. Until then I was fine thinking of it as a forest theme. My view is tainted forever. Curse you, Captain Kenri! Rating: 6.5/10 Tales of Vesperia - The Wise One Because that title totally makes me think of a boss fight. Great battle theme indeed. I really liked the final boss themes, and this helped. The ominous chanting is a bonus for me. The instrumentals make up the meat of the track that makes it an appetizing course to eat. ...Listen to. ...I just channeled that one The World Ends With You guy for a Tales of Vesperia track. I should just stop now before I make this train wreck also explode. Rating: 7.5/10 Tales of Vesperia - Oath of the Union Was waiting for this one. This is probably my second favorite town theme, behind only one other that is about to come up. Once again, I oddly find myself agreeing with Kenri. This is the sort of music I would usually not like. Yet I really like it here, and it fits so well with the town. The weirdest part is its melody reminded me of a song I had heard. It took me a while to figure out which, and when I did, I found it was... ...Well shoot, I forgot the name of it. But I can basically sing it! Rating: 7/10 Tales of Vesperia - Beyond the Mirage Chalk this up as another cool sounding name for a Tales of Vesperia track. As I mentioned above, only one town theme is above Oath of a Union, and this is it. Absolutely beautiful for music in a town! I was sad that the town it played in was indeed not visited very long. It fit the town well, but it left few times to hear it. Thanks internet for solving that problem to some extent. Rating: 7/10 --- "That was pretty interesting. But dropping a warship on me is cheating... Take it back!"-Id, Xenogears |

| Level: 41 New Moderator | So yeah, the one with the general rankings was written a while ago (for instance, I own Radiant Historia and am playing it now), while this post and the Tales of Vesperia one I wrote up now. In case anyone cares. Armored Core 4 - Thinker I think this track about thinking will be particularly... I forgot where I was going with this. Like most Armored Core tracks I have heard, this is good! I think my favorite part is the introduction, so I am sort of sad it did not stick to that. Not that the rest is not good, I still like it. I still prefer Today to it, but they are close. In terms of being able to hear the lyrics, this would get a one out of ten or something. Good thing I like Japanese songs and thus am very used to not understanding the words! Rating: 7/10 LocoRoco - Red's Theme what I... I do not even... It... it is like someone took the Lion King singer guy, made his voice high pitched and annoying, and dumped a bucket of awful on the CD they recorded it to. Just... this is beyond words. And not in any sort of good way. I do not look forward to hearing Kenri's other picks from this game. Please tell me there is not a Blue's Theme to go with it. Rating: 2.5/10 Sonic CD (JP) - Tidal Tempest Present It sure is a present after what I just had to hear. Yes, this does work as an aquatic theme. I have to admit that it impresses me. That background sound effect that seems... cool, in a temperature sense... is my favorite part. And yes I am sure that made no sense to anyone at all but there it is. A small gem amongst a lot of questionable Sonic tracks. Rating: 6.5/10 --- "That was pretty interesting. But dropping a warship on me is cheating... Take it back!"-Id, Xenogears |

| Level: 43 Editor | Ragnarok Online - We Have Lee But You Don't Have http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oROj6nNG4wI&hd=1 Scientifically proven to have the best name ever?? For some reason I thought I disliked this song, until hearing it in the VGMC6. Nope! Actually really like it. Maybe I was thinking of Din Don Dan Dan Fo, though I like that song too. (We Have Lee But You Don't Have is definitely way better though.) We Have Lee But You Don't Have has a really nice almost mystical feeling to it. It's also got a lot of energy, at least after its (rather short) build-up. I especially like parts like 1:40, where it stops for a moment and then starts up again. --- "You're childish. | Level: 43 Editor | Xenoblade Chronicles - Zanza https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G2OGYMSfDfM&hd=1 What are you doing here, little song? Shouldn't you be in Xenosaga? Zanza is the most Xenosaga-esque song in a soundtrack that mostly sounds nothing like the soundtracks of its pseudo-precursors. This is kind of a shame because I feel like all three Xenosaga games have soundtracks that blow Xenoblade's away, but whatever. Zanza takes a bit to get going (and the first few seconds are kind of weird and not great), but after it gets into gear I feel like it's quite good. The vocals are of course the draw here, hitting a perfect balance of catchy and ominous, but I also think the piano adds a really nice touch. I do wish this song did a bit more - it always feels a bit short even at 3 minutes long - but I digress. --- "You're childish. What are you getting? Are you getting strawberry? Ha! Honestly? I like the Fate/Extra version a bit more when just listening to it for the sake of listening. Still a good track though once it gets going. | Level: 43 Editor | Silverball - Blood www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZLjGxZdC6KE&hd=1 One of the songs I picked out for my Epic Pinball nomination during the Best OST Contest on GameFAQs. Technically I'm still not sure if Silverball is an expansion for Epic Pinball or a different game, but I got the go ahead so I guess it was fine! (And then I think Blood lost its match but whatever.) Blood starts off with some atmospheric sound effects, using wind, rain, and thunder to set the mood quite well; one can practically see the creepy castle at the top of the hill silhouetted by the lightning in the distance. The interesting thing about Blood is that this is the only build-up the song has; after the sound effects have set the mood, it immediately jumps into a high intensity section. Still suitably creepy, but now with an element of tension. There are some lower intensity sections later, which are nice for breaking up the song and reestablishing the haunting mood, but in general Blood seems like it plays almost out of order - in a good way. --- "You're childish. | Level: 43 Editor | Medieval II: Total War - We Are All One http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bxylfcE82ho&hd=1 I know you fight for God, / And you believe it's right... Last time I posted a song from this series, it was Bird of Time, also by Angela van Dyck. While I think that song is better from an actual listening-to-it standpoint, We Are All One comes out ahead in terms of lyrics, at least in part. (Warning: Writeup with heavy emphasis on lyrics incoming.) It's actually a lot closer than I make it sound. I think Bird of Time's lyrics are better. They have actual symbolism. That song shows rather than tells (for the most part). This song is the opposite. While they both have strong anti-war themes, this one is much, much more blatant about it. I know you fight for God, And you believe it's right To risk your home, your life, To face the evil knight But in the darkest night, When our children are asleep I think about the families Of our enemy Do they feel the same? Believe in their own truth? They must love the children As fiercely as we do We all share one thing: Our hearts were given from above And the only thing worth fighting for in this world is love In a few lines, this song completely tears apart the concept of a holy war and, shortly thereafter, the idea of war in general. Bird of Time is more nuanced; this denies even the possibility of being nuanced. So there's good and bad in that approach: this comes off as more honest and refreshingly idealistic, at the expense of probably being a worse song for it. It doesn't help that all other aspects of the song aren't as interesting as Bird of Time, and I wish there was another verse or two to help justify the 4 minute run time. Nevertheless, to me this song is immensely successful and I've been listening to it a lot recently. --- "You're childish. What are you getting? Are you getting strawberry? Ha! | Level: 43 Editor | Frozen Synapse: Red - Parting Shots http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BZcj06IRNcc&hd=1 Another song I heard in the BOST2 contest. Frozen Synapse wasn't able to repeat its Cinderella run despite (or because of?) songs from the DLC, but I quite liked this song. It mixes heavy percussion with light, airy piano notes - and then at about two minutes in seems to take off into the atmosphere as it introduces vocals. It's got a dreamy, almost ethereal quality to it that I find absolutely beautiful, even if it's not quite as interesting as a lot of Frozen Synapse's other tracks. --- "You're childish. | Level: 41 New Moderator | So remember how I was posting tracks from games I already posted tracks from back in April? No? Honestly I don't remember why *I* remember. But I always wanted to finish that up, and after putting a few of these into Kenri's latest ranking topic, I decided to finally get to it here. I only did April 1-24, so here, have the last six. - Steins;Gate - Masquerade https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OISqAWrEk7g&hd=1 The original link I had for this is now gone. A pity, as it had a translation, but what can you do? The full version is easily my favorite track from Steins;Gate besides Skyclad Observer, which it is very close to if not equal. But I cannot find that full version on Youtube now, just this one. Which is missing like a minute. And that sucks. I mean, the song itself is still good, but the lack of a verse hurts. ...Anyway, I believe this is an image song for Okabe (who I think is the protagonist, but I have not seen or played it yet). If I can find the full version in the future I will probably wind up uploading it myself. The score I am giving is probably reflecting that more as I really cannot imagine this track without thinking of that extra verse. Meh. Rating: 9/10 Muramasa: The Demon Blade - Dusky A https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r0WGRFiYDc0&hd=1 My favorite level music from Muramasa is this. Dusky B is not as good. I always felt Muramasa's soundtrack is sort of similar to Okami's, but this one feels like something that one would get crossing Okami and Castlevania. And Kenri evidently agreed with this because that is what he said in his write-up. So at least one person shares my opinion. Also I wish I could have found a different video for this, but I could not, so 'enjoy' that picture. Rating: 6.5/10 Chaos Legion - A Way to Nowhere Stage ~Ruins~ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=snoYUg-H6Rg&hd=1 Well, I cannot say for sure if Stage ~Ruins~ is part of it, but most Chaos Legion tracks have Stage ~Insert Place~ in their title from the looks of it. Though Feel No Fear is probably better, I found myself listening to this a lot and really like it. The main reason for this is 0:45-1:14, which is easily my favorite section. It has some down time near the end that I am not as fond of, but otherwise I like it. Rating: 6.5/10 The World Ends With You - Give Me All Your Love https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-AUSoms6-oI&hd=1 Long Dream, Someday, and this are probably my favorite battle themes from The World Ends With You. Unless I am forgetting something. Anyway, the lyrics for this are pretty awful and if you want to enjoy this at all I suggest ignoring what the singer is saying. Good thing the song itself is catchy. Rating: 6.5/10 The Legend of Dragoon - Royal Castle https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PkRXoZijGyY Yep, this is what most would consider a generic theme. Yet here it is as one of my favorite video game tracks of all time. I have spent far too much time just loitering about castles in The Legend of Dragoon simply to hear this theme. I did it as a kid, and I did it on my recent restarting of the game. It always makes me feel relaxed and happy. Rating: 9/10 Radiant Historia - Mechanical Kingdom https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I82d6NBRFjA&hd=1 My favorite tracks in Radiant Historia are the ones that play during battles. But all four of those have already been posted. So here is what is probably my fifth favorite (hard call, as I like so much of its soundtrack). It is a town theme that I feel like I should call peaceful, yet... cannot. Something just seems a tad bit off, giving it sort of a gray feeling. If you can call colors feelings. | Level: 43 Editor | Arc the Lad IV: Twilight of the Spirits - Balmy Breeze www.youtube.com/watch?v=11N9h44pO4U&hd=1 A more nuanced piece than the name might imply. I really like the contrast in the beginning between the softer piano(?) and the sharper, more crackly percussion; this segues nicely into a brass section a bit later that really pulls the song together. It's fairly laidback, but I also get a strong sense of adventure from it. Balmy Breeze also has spot-on pacing -- partly that's just because it's short, but it's also because it's constantly evolving. I have a bit of a love/hate relationship with that kind of song, but it works here because every change feels perfectly organic and natural. --- "You're childish. What are you getting? Are you getting strawberry? Ha! That's such a childish flavor, only children eat strawberry." |
