Soon after I meet mom, somebody who I presume is my sister pops up. Mom reminds her she owes me 10 yen, while I wonder how much that is in USD.

We then have a conversation, where my silence is especially fitting since I have no idea what's going on, and I try to leave, only to have mom stop me. Apparently I'm supposed to attempt to open this conspicuously enormous present.

My box-opening prowess is rewarded with a lot of pretty squiggles:

Much to my surprise, the "Professor Oak's lab" portion of our adventure has been replaced by this box thing, as I am greeted with a selection of three Pok

This is actually a lot harder than I thought it would be: pressing F12 and saving a file a bunch of times is fairly unpleasant and just as time-consuming. So I'll probably revert to mostly text after this. >_>

Anyhow, when I left off I had just acquired my disappointingly grass-type starter. That triggers the epic rival battle.

Now I find out my rival is not, in fact, my sister, but one of those zombies from the opening dialogue. She's also a total fruit.

Unfortunately it turns out I haven't an ounce of class myself. Look at that trashy outfit! Mother should not be proud. But this is Japan, so who knows? Maybe this is what they think Americans dress like. And they'd be right.

It's not my fault Nintendo is behind on their intrabusiness racial sensitivity conferences.

So I decided to play until my plant guy evolves into something presumably even more suave (which happens on level 17). In the process, I beat the first gym leader. Here are a few observations:

- To my displeasure, the rival experience doesn't end when they leave you alone. When you go downstairs you're treated to another cutscene scenario, this one involving what I assume is your real mother, and then you go find Professor Oak, who teaches you how to catch Pok
