It occurs to me that the newer generations of Pokemon have the capacity to do battle/trade over WiFi, a feature I've never used before but which I take to mean allows you to do these things with anyone. That includes you! I'm sure we could rustle up four people for the world's worst Pokemon tournament ever.

Thoughts?

It would be possible? I think.

Of course my participation would require that the others have HGSS, because I refuse to touch BW/BW2 or DPP <_<

As it stands... That would be Kenri and I. <_<
And I don't think Kenri even has HGSS anymore.

I'm not sure if XP has HGSS.

There's also the fact that I hate competition and suck at it. So, there's that.

It would have to be BW because that's all I have. =(

Then I guess I wouldn't participate. I don't like BW/BW2's pokemon designs.

We could just use Pokemon Online, that might be the easiest way. But physical carts would greatly improve the "this is the worst tournament with the worst players" aspect.

I think HGSS can link with BW and BW2 so that isn't an issue.

xp does not own, as far as I know, any online compatible Pokemon game. But CG7 does so she might be down. Think she prefers Pokemon Online though.

A quick look online... HGSS can't link with BW/BW2 because they're gen 5, and HGSS are gen4. They could link with DPP, but not Gen5.

I don't like BW/BW2's pokemon designs.

Yeah, it was a pretty terrible generation.

This is the first time I've heard of Pokemon Online and it seems like that would be an alternative for people who don't have BW or DPP.

Apparently Pokemon Online allows you to make new moves/Pokemon.

There's no way that could go badly!

This is true, as far as I know, as well. I have RBY, GSC, and like... Sapphire. But Sapphire doesn't count because my team there is terrible because I apparently stopped playing in the middle (or maybe I beat the game technically, I forget. Think my party level was around Level 40)

Eel: What error pops up? I had a similar problem with trying to get my DSi XL online.

If nothing works, try setting "Auto Obtain DNS" to OFF and then put in Googles DNS adress. (8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4)

So it looks like if we were to do this we would do an optional Pokemon Online/actual video games split. I propose the following structure:

- Round-robin format

If there are six participants, that's five battles per person, which may be hard to coordinate. Six is kind of an awkward number: other formats would always award someone a bye or require someone to be paired down.

- Only terrible Pokemon: NU and RU tiers on Smogon (maybe UU)

I suggest this because these tiers have the most variety in species, even if most of them are bad and/or involve Pokemon you never knew existed. Plus, I would be able to use Articuno!

Random Related Fact: My introduction to Pokemon (and, from there, trading cards and Gameboy games) came through the Lunchable promotion where the boxes had stickers or something with pictures of Pokemon on them. My initial impression was that the whole thing was ridiculous, but then I encountered Articuno and thought "puuuuuuuuuuurdy!" Articuno is the reason I became (even more of) a nerd.

- Prizes! If y'all have PayPal I can award some piddly (emphasis on piddly) amount of money to the winner

like, $3

Oh right. Derp.

This sounds better to me if we're using Pokemon Online (if we do physical carts, then I'm just rolling in with Azumarill/Cinccino/Mienshao/Whimsicott/Magnezone/Magmar for BW2 or Feraligatr/Dunsparce/Skarmory/Ninetales/Gengar/some filler for HGSS and probably losing every single match).

I don't even know what pokemon I had leveled on HGSS.

I think I have a level 51 or something Typhlosion, and a level 60 Lugia.

I KNOW I have a level 100 Adamant Scyther, though.

Azumarill/Cinccino/Mienshao/Whimsicott/Magnezone/Magmar

With the exception of Magnezone, which is OU, these are all UU or below. Also, Cincinno? Whimsicott? Magmar? What is going on here?

Feraligatr/Dunsparce/Skarmory/Ninetales/Gengar/

Assuming DP tiers, Skarmory and Gengar are OU and the rest are UU or below.

I have no issue with these teams: my aim is for teams that don't look like competitive tournament entries, and neither of these teams could be described in that way.

a level 60 Lugia.

So you don't get it at level 70 in Soul Silver?

I KNOW I have a level 100 Adamant Scyther, though.

Is there some reason this isn't a Scizor?

Magmar evolves via trade so it's stuck there. I could use my alternate instead, but it's Boldore which... has the same issue. whoops.

Cincinno has Skill Link, which gives it a 120 BP STAB move and two other 120 BP moves with type coverage. Pretty cool.

Whimsicott with Prankster has +1 priority to status effects, allowing it to drop a Stun Spore or Leech Seed before the opponent has a chance to stop it.

So you don't get it at level 70 in Soul Silver?

I think you're thinking of the other game?
You get the games respective mascot early, so they're a lower level. While you can get the other mascot, it's a higher level.

My Lugia was level 50 or something when I got it.

Is there some reason this isn't a Scizor?

Trade + I don't like Scizor.

Magmar evolves via trade so it's stuck there

If you want, I could help with that?

evolves via trade

You know, for what amounts to a viral marketing strategy, this one was particularly uninspired. A good chunk of people playing this game won't have anyone to trade with (e.g. me, you apparently), while even if you do know somebody with the game, unless they're close friends you're setting yourself up to be extorted. You essentially have to find someone else who wants to evolve by trading in order to avoid any problems with the mechanic.

Stupid.

Cincinno has Skill Link, which gives it a 120 BP STAB move and two other 120 BP moves with type coverage. Pretty cool.

Any reason you don't use Cloyster instead? Azumarill taking its spot?

Whimsicott with Prankster has 1 priority to status effects, allowing it to drop a Stun Spore or Leech Seed before the opponent has a chance to stop it.

Fair enough. I prefer to use Leech Seed on something more offensively-minded, or Ferrothorn. (Who knew a weird metallic bramble plant thing could be so awesome?)

You get the games respective mascot early, so they're a lower level. While you can get the other mascot, it's a higher level.

It's been so long since I've played Silver that the internal battery is dead, so I don't really remember this. I thought you got all the final mascots at 70 in the first three generations, but I could be hallucinating.

I don't like Scizor.

That's crazy talk.

Yeah. If you have SoulSilver, you get Lugia at like... 45 or 50 or something. While getting Ho-Oh in SoulSilver, he'd be level 70.

That's crazy talk.

Not really...
I play Pokemon with Pokemon I like. Not the best pokemon available.

Scizor is also super overused IIRC, so fuck that.

If you want, I could help with that?

Maybe if we do this tournament and I have to use my BW2 team, otherwise I don't really care (don't think I even have the item I need in BW2 either). Thanks though!

Any reason you don't use Cloyster instead? Azumarill taking its spot?

I dunno if Shellder is even in BW2 or where if so, plus Minccino is one of the few Pokemon with a Dream World ability that you can actually reasonably get, so there's novelty value there. And yeah, I had Azumarill by that point too.

You know, for what amounts to a viral marketing strategy, this one was particularly uninspired. A good chunk of people playing this game won't have anyone to trade with (e.g. me, you apparently), while even if you do know somebody with the game, unless they're close friends you're setting yourself up to be extorted. Eh, I haven't had issues trading online, though I did prefer it when you could just use the GTS trick.

Fair enough. I prefer to use Leech Seed on something more offensively-minded, or Ferrothorn. (Who knew a weird metallic bramble plant thing could be so awesome?)

In fairness my Whimsicott is sort of offensively minded, it's running Leech Seed/Stun Spore/Giga Drain/Hurricane for pseudo-sweeper value. This also makes it pretty terrible because it should really have Encore and U-Turn instead but whatever.
