My niece, who turns 11 at the end of the month, recently acquired an XBox 360. She has one game: some kind of Dragonball Z thing. (She's a fan of Dragonball Z and Pokemon.) I assume, based on my knowledge of DBZ, that this is basically Street Fighter skinned with cartoon muscle men.

I'm thinking of getting her another game for her birthday. Can y'all think of anything in this vein that isn't excessively gory? Do you think Halo would work? (Halo is the only XBox game I can name off the top of my head.)

Minecraft.

...To actually expand on this.

Minecraft is an exploration game where you explore a procedurally generated world made up of blocks. EVERY SINGLE BLOCK (Except the ones at the bottom of the world) can be mined up and moved around.

You can also fight against enemies, explore dungeons and stuff.

Primarily though, it's more or less a building game. Able to build anything to your hearts desires.

Funnily enough, I wanted to give this to my cousin for his birthday but I looked EVERYFUCKINGWHERE and couldn't find it on the PS3.

However, I don't know if the 360 version has a physical copy. You MAY have to give her a money card which she can use on her 360 to buy stuff.
I just checked, yes it does apparently.

--

Halo is pretty safe.
While there is blood and stuff, it's not really excessive. It's violent, but not TOO violent. There's no gore really.

Despite having an M rating, the violence is more T level.

---

I was about to suggest Fable, but stay away from Fable... It's got some pretty crude shit in it. (For example, in Fable 2 you can go treasure hunting and dig up a used condom <_<)

---

Blue Dragon is a "kid friendly" JRPG. It;s got some light swearing (Such as Damnit and Bastard) but overall though, it's pretty kid friendly. It's also easy as shit.

---

Viva Pinata is kind of a garden game. It's EXTREMELY KID FRIENDLY.
You own a garden to which you try and attract living Pinatas to it so they can live in your garden.

It's sort of like a Sims game, but you can't control the Pinatas.

I feel like I should be more helpful here.

...But every Xbox/360 game I can recall has me going, "Wait... that might be a problem."

I mean, even Tales of Vesperia of all games. >_>

Kodan's advice is pretty good and close to what I'd say (Viva Pinata and Minecraft). I'd add Sonic Generations and Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed (gosh, is that a mouthful) as options. Maybe Peggle or Beautiful Katamari if she likes more puzzle-y games. Also, if she likes Legos there are a bunch of Lego games on pretty much every system. Rayman Origins or Legends.

idk I'm tapped out. Also I've played like none of these so your mileage may vary.

Hm, this sounds somewhat like Legos... but she doesn't like Legos. But she likes Angry Birds (but not enough to get her that)! Still good?

Despite having an M rating, the violence is more T level.

Hm, well, it can't be much worse than DBZ, but I'm somewhat dubious her parents would approve of an M-rated game.

I was about to suggest Fable, but stay away from Fable... It's got some pretty crude shit in it. (For example, in Fable 2 you can go treasure hunting and dig up a used condom <_<)

Video gaming experiences are always enhanced by used condom hunting.

Blue Dragon is a "kid friendly" JRPG. It;s got some light swearing (Such as Damnit and Bastard) but overall though, it's pretty kid friendly. It's also easy as shit.

Easy is good! RPG is maybe less good. I've watched her play Pokemon on her DS and she seems reluctant to do the reading necessary to make progress.

Viva Pinata is kind of a garden game. It's EXTREMELY KID FRIENDLY.
You own a garden to which you try and attract living Pinatas to it so they can live in your garden.

Wow, I never heard of this game before. She seems to like helping with her family's garden, and she likes generic progress/accumulation type things, so this is an intriguing idea.

...But every Xbox/360 game I can recall has me going, "Wait... that might be a problem."

This is why Nintendo still exists.

I have not heard of nay of these, so I'll have to look into them.

Thanks y'all! I'll let you know what I end up getting her and, eventually, how it turned out.

but she doesn't like Legos.
doesn't like Legos.

Your niece is a freak and you should be ashamed to be related to her.

To be serious, it SORT OF is in the regards you can build things. Primarily, it's an exploration game and building game. Your imagination is the limit.

This is a town I built over the course of a month on and off to give you an idea.
http://i.imgur.com/Y4aV7.png

Also, I suggest watching this video to give an idea of the game
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4bh4EexJO4I
It's from the alpha version, but the basics are there.

Also, minor nitpick. Its LEGO. Plural and singular, it's just spelled LEGO.

Hm, well, it can't be much worse than DBZ, but I'm somewhat dubious her parents would approve of an M-rated game.

Like I said, the violence is very T rated. It just has an M rating because of swearing AND violence. Nothing sexual, or over the top swearing wise. Maybe a BASTARD, SON OF A BITCH, nothing "hardcore" like FUCK.

Wow, I never heard of this game before. She seems to like helping with her family's garden, and she likes generic progress/accumulation type things, so this is an intriguing idea.

She probably will like it then. You tend a garden, attract pinatas, make it pretty and all that. It's actually pretty good.

Easy is good! RPG is maybe less good. I've watched her play Pokemon on her DS and she seems reluctant to do the reading necessary to make progress.

Good news! The game is 99% voice acted!
Very little reading required.

She never had Legos growing up, so that's probably a significant factor.

Will do!

Also, minor nitpick. Its LEGO. Plural and singular, it's just spelled LEGO.

Unfortunately, I am bound by the Linguists' Code of Honor to lecture you about this.

LEGO is a trademarked brand name. The pieces themselves are called "pieces" or "blocks"; LEGO is the kind of piece or block. By LEGO's official style (and in Danish: Legoklodser) the correct plural is "LEGO blocks". The singular is also "LEGO block". This kind of thing is common for brand names; for example, here is a list of guidelines instructing the use of "Oreo cookie(s)" over "Oreo(s)". The list doesn't stop here. Adobe doesn't approve of the term "photoshopping". Google is not a fan of verbs. Rollerblades. And so on. These recommendations are made to maintain "brand integrity" and protect trademarks.

Of course, that's not how these words are used. The process by which a trademarked brand name begins to replace the word it's supposed to be describing (i.e. Legos -> LEGO pieces) is typically called "semantic widening" (and... various other things) in linguistics and genericization or erosion in trademark law. This process creates a new word that typically follows common morphology for the language. Thus, photoshopping.

The best test for whether a word exists is whether it is in common use. "Legos" has several million hits on Google and is used regularly in formal and semi-formal contexts. At least one dictionary lists it as a plural form of the word. This is strong evidence that the string functions just fine at its job - conveying the intended meaning - and is thus a word.

So, "Legos" is indeed the plural form of a word referring to LEGO pieces. The only reasons to believe it isn't a word are either because you have a financial stake in its not being one and/or you believe the phrase "not a word" can apply to words in popular use based on some kind of ad hoc rule - a position not particularly popular in linguistics. Either way, the argument is not particularly compelling when compared to historical trends. See: kleenex, zipper, aspirin, yo-yo, etc.

Now, you could say that this website is a sociolinguistic context where the term LEGO is prefered to Legos for pragmatic reasons, but that's not likely to be true.

Like I said, the violence is very T rated. It just has an M rating because of swearing AND violence. Nothing sexual, or over the top swearing wise. Maybe a BASTARD, SON OF A BITCH, nothing "hardcore" like FUCK.

Hm... well, I think the other options beat this out right now, but I think when she gets to junior high this will become a good option. She needs to learn how to be a teenager sometime!

Good news! The game is 99% voice acted!
Very little reading required.

Your brother or sister is a psychopath and shouldn't be allowed near children to deprive them of such pleasures.

Will do!
It's not long and you don't need to watch the ENTIRE SERIES (Unless you want to... Those videos got me into the game!), the first one will give you an idea of the game as a whole.

There's still the odd text you need to talk to an NPC in text, but for the most part it's voice acted. But it's NO WHERE NEAR as much as Pokemon.

Brother. Probably didn't occur to him to get her any because he never had any growing up... in communist Romania.

Though to be fair, it didn't occur to me to get her any, either.

Pokemon sometimes feels like it was designed to teach kids to read, except they forgot to make the reading look like anything more than a distraction from the real business of magical cockfighting.

Yeah, I've gotten that vibe from Pokemon too. I know what you mean.
The stories are pretty much garbage though. The gameplay is WAY more interesting.

I don't give a shit what Mean Bad Group #232785138965 is up to in That Abandoned Warehouse. I care more about collecting badges and defeating the Elite 4. Fuck off!

That's true. I should have said "cartoon muscle men with ridiculous hair." Wait, no, that's Street Fighter too.

... I got nothing.

Also, you should get her a 3DS bundle.

She already has one. =

Aka, Steam is a digital distribution service for games.

Every Summer/Winter they run INSANE deals on games. This is mostly why Steam is so awesome. You can get awesome games for CHEAP.

My best saving, imo, was Civilization 5.
At the time I bought it, if I were to buy the game (Gold Edition + 2 DLC + the expansion Gods And Kings) when it wasn't on sale I would have spent somewhere around $75 for it.

I bought it during the winter sale 2 years ago for $22. (Civ5, 2 DLCs + the expansion)
I got the second expansion (Brave New World) last summer for $10 (Normally is $30)

Due to Humble Bundles + Steam Sales, I've spent a little over $400 total over the last 3 years and own over 190 games on Steam <_<

$400 would get you like... 5 games on a console <_<
