Picked this up and have been playing it... my thoughts:

I'm really glad to see this even exist. I know I'm in the minority, but I love Chrono Cross more than Chrono Trigger. Don't get me wrong, I love the series as a whole but I've always been more invested in Cross and the soundtrack is bar none one of the best OSTs ever made. Music and melody is a major detail in the game even down to doing the final boss properly and I always liked that.

This remaster though is not without issues. It shouldn't feel like it did 22 years ago running on a modern PC and the Switch, PS4, and PS5 ports all have the same issue. It chugs and has frame drops the same way the PS1 version did 22 years ago and that's unacceptable honestly even for $20. It can be alleviated a bit by forcing V-Sync through your graphics card and setting the max FPS to 60, but still. It should just work normally at 60 FPS at this point. The FMVs also look horrendous because they were AI upscaled and it just didn't work out. That was sad to see upon booting the dream sequence in the beginning because it's right in your face.

The real selling point on this to me is to support the idea that more Chrono stuff is something people want. I still want the third game that was rumored to be intended. And the biggest deal about this package is Radical Dreamers finally being released with a real translation worldwide. Hell, Europe never even got Chrono Cross itself until this release and that's a travesty on it's own. I haven't touched the inclusion of Radical Dreamers yet but I'm excited to get around to it. Supposedly there's something new once you've completed both Radical Dreamers and Chrono Cross but I didn't want to find out what it was so I'll see it once I complete everything.

In short: It's Chrono Cross and I fucking love it. It's only $20 and even if the performance issues are frustrating to have to find a way to solve on your own, I still see value in supporting the idea of it even being a thought from Square after 22 years and maybe they'll even patch it and fix them soon. I'll play the shit out of this until I've gotten all the achievements and I'll still play it every so often because it's legitimately one of my favorite games of all time. So to me, issues aside, it's worth it.

Oh yeah, the new artwork for the characters is great and the improved music is also a major plus. The tracks sound even better with the cleaning up done for the remaster.

Hey, you named a character after the main player character, so I wouldn't be surprised =3

I liked Chrono Cross, but at the time the story really lost me unlike Chrono Trigger. I might give it another shot someday to understand it better, but it seemed pretty much like a big departure from Chrono Trigger for me.

The reason it felt like a big departure was due to a lot of ideas being cut or scrapped at the last minute. There were a lot more Chrono Trigger tie-ins originally but they were scrapped. The Chrono Trigger DS remaster brought one of these ideas back when you beat the bonus final boss and that was that Magus is present in Chrono Cross the whole time. Radical Dreamers also originally pointed toward this, but since it never came out anywhere but Japan audiences here were completely unaware of it unless they were actively in communities online like the Chrono Compendium. I still haven't played the official version of Radical Dreamers yet, but I'm assuming the translation still points to all of this especially after the DS remaster.

Finished up Radical Dreamers last night. Official translation made it a lot more fun and the style of the game still holds up as a mini CYOA visual novel. Only did the main ending, but it was an enjoyable experience.

The new scene included with this version is at the end of the Staff Credits on the launcher once you've completed a run through Chrono Cross and Radical Dreamers and while it wasn't a huge thing or anything, it was a nice touch and I liked it. Still hope to see more Chrono projects come out of this too.

Forgot to mention that I played this last month. It surprises me how good this visual novel project really was in terms of graphics and sound. Lynx was way different, though. Prefer the new version. Serge, funny enough, was alot more skinny looking and actually in a way reminded me of a apprectice mage to Magil.

While I doubt they will make one down the road, the two games made me realize if they have the options down the road, they will likely go down a Chrono Multiverse timeline, but alot more serious than modern ideas with this. Though I would imagine that would be one huge headache for someone at Square, if they have someone that can pull it off, that would be awesome.
