It's unfortunate the Bucs have been to the Superbowl (can we forget that one?), or the inevitable Houston-Tampa Superbowl 2011 would be even more amazing.

Of course, that's if you believe beating the Panthers and Browns puts you into Superbowl contention. Which I totally do.

Maybe I should be rooting for the Seahawks, but I'm not sufficiently well-integrated to get out of the "point and laugh" mode of viewing Seattle sports.

I mean, just look at the Huskies. Or the Mariners.

Or the Seahawks.

Hey, at least they're not the Broncos!

...Then I remind myself that the Jets nearly lost to them last week and I don't know what to think.

I'm not sure "bad" is the right description. They're fairly inconsistent; even in the same game they have quarters where they do OK and then quarters when they just suck. The Jaguars, Colts, and Ravens games are examples.

Bucs lost to the Falcons. It's a pity they have real teams in their conference. New Orleans is probably going to stomp all over them a second time later in the season.

In other news, good thing I didn't get tickets to the Seahawks game today. I need to go watch them when they play a team they can beat, like the Panthers.

They can beat the Panthers, right?

Ogor, no matter what happens to the Bucs, you can at least take solace that Vick is no longer in the NFC South.

I would rather have Vick still in Atlanta. Then when the Bucs lose to Arizona I have an arbitrary good player to blame it on. "Oh, they just lost to Michael Vick." Kind of like with New Orleans. "Oh, they just lost to Drew Brees." Now all I have is: "They just lost to Matt Ryan... and the rest of the Falcons."

Seattle's on top of the morbid amazing NFC West. Maybe I should start being a bandwagon fan. They play the Chiefs in Seattle in two weeks; clearly a reason to shell out $80 for a horrible seat. Nobody said the bandwagon was cheap!

Tampa's 10-6 was apparently not good enough (I blame the Lions), but what's this? Seattle is in the playoffs? And they have a home game? Awesome! Time to go see the worst playoff team in history duke it out with the defending champions... in person!

So I guess I chose the one live NFL game I would go to this season well (assuming the Seahawks get mauled by the Bears or Falcons)(poultry fight!), and since like any good college student I have a lot of time on my hands I guess I'll do a post on my experience. But first, pictures!

http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=248805&id=522461383&l=5ccdb65a2e

I saw the guy next to me taking snapshots late in the game and realized I too had a pitiful cellphone camera and decided to try to take some pictures despite the meddling lighting and the overall suckage of the Pre's camera; I took one from every relevant angle so that my parents could get a good idea of where I was sitting. I tried to get a picture of the super cool (well, I think it's super cool) flag run they do after touchdowns but I didn't time it very well and you can't distinguish the flags anyway. I guess I won't be winning any photography awards anytime soon.

Let's split this up into categories!

Obligatory Personal Mayhem: My plan was initially to go with a friend of mine who's graduating in two quarters and moving to California, as a sort of going away present. But this upstanding fellow slept through the morning and didn't contact me until after the opening kickoff, so I spent quite a bit of time trying (and failing) to solve that problem (I had his ticket). In the process I missed a few plays, including Hasselbeck's interception and most of the opening drive in the third quarter, including the touchdown, since I was trying to get to my seat at the time. Sad face.

The Trip to My Seat: There's a bus that goes directly from the hospital right next to my apartment building to the ferries a half mile away from Quest Field. All but two people evacuated said bus when we got to the downtown shopping center, so the bus driver, the straggler, and myself spent a few minutes complaining about how the Seahawks screwed a bunch of teams and also about the Chargers' customary ineptitude.

Upon arriving at the ferries I wasn't entirely sure where to go until I saw a massive crush of people wearing Seahawks paraphernalia trudging, zombie-like, up the street, with no regard for traffic. (One unfortunate driver spent several minutes sitting in the middle of an intersection while fifty people walked right through the street in front of him.) I had the misfortune to find myself behind the only person wearing a Saints jersey and became a bystander to some heckling.

Once we all arrived to the stadium there was bedlam. The security checkpoint was totally swamped by people who had no idea what they were doing despite the clearly marked "dudes here, chicks there" signs. One random woman grabbed my shoulders from behind and moved me into the women's line/mess, adding: "You're supposed to be here." This is the price I pay for being beautiful.

The security procedure was pretty anticlimactic. Some guy brushed my arms and that was it. Makes me wonder why progression through the swarm was so slow. Oh, that's right. Seahawks fans.

I had a lot of trouble finding my seat (Row LL, Seat 3) once I got to my section (way up on the third level). All the signs said useless things like "Seats 100399308 - 12983098983" and it took me a while to get a bearing on what rows were where since I didn't see them marked anywhere. I went up the stairs a few times before I got tired of walking up the ridiculous incline (my fear of heights kicked in at some point) and asked someone, who pointed me to the bottom of the seat and a little black circle with the row letter(s) on it. That still wasn't enough for me though, since I went back down to row L (from S) before realizing the double-letter rows were at the top. I'm stupid, you see. And when I was coming back from halftime I went into the wrong side of the section somehow and got some more mountain-climbing experience.

The Fans: The sort of people who go to football games are a perceptive lot. Throughout my travels I heard everything from some insightful, timely witticisms about securitization ("If that guys touches my dick I'm getting a boner") to the usual snide, biting remarks toward the opposition ("Nice retro hat! Go F your mom in the butt-thing!"). Also, I heard some people talking about Arizona's fortunes in something called the "PAC-10". I wonder what that's all about.

I was initially unprepared for how loud all the screaming would be; it vibrated my phone so much early on I thought someone was texting me. I was seated next to an older fellow who liked to complain about Hasselbeck's tendency to throw the ball at the ground, a fellow eating a chilidog, and Scott Bakula. Whenever something amazing happened (the Seahawks scoring, for instance), there was a lot of vertical arm thrusting and high fives. Being a weenie, I didn't do any of this except a few random high fives I fell into by gawking. Also, I clapped a few times.

Gamewise, the crowd got three drive-killing false start penalties (which the stadium kept track of via jumbotron, though once they mistakenly deducted one from the total instead of adding one in the fourth quarter) out of the Saints and it's no exaggeration to say the fans really helped the flailing Seattle defense get a few stops, including two with the Saints pinned deep in their own territory. I don't think the Seahawks would have had a chance in New Orleans. I did not contribute to this.

And, to their credit, the fans never seemed to lose faith in the Seahawks, not even after their 0-10 start. The only time they started to get antsy was when the offense and defense started playing like the Washington Huskies at the beginning of the fourth quarter, and that was confined to yelling at the punter ("Does your girlfriend punt, too?") and the old fellow next to me complaining even more vociferously about Hasselbeck ("That was not an 18-yard play!").

Quest Field: The field is certainly nice on the outside, but it isn't too bad on the inside, either. I had some mediocre tickets but was able to see the little ants playing football below fairly well, except due to my shrimpfulness I sometimes had to stand on tip-toes to see over the people standing in front of me. With the exception of the conspicuously empty seat next to me, the place was packed, and network effects made it so we had to stand up basically the whole game.

Otherwise, the stadium isn't much to write home about unless you're paying for a suite or actively participating in the game. The useless chair I never sat in wasn't anything fancy and it was fairly small, apparently designed under the assumption that no two neighbors would ever be sitting at the same time. There's an awful lot of concrete, and the third level concession/intermission/sexy bathroom time area - in addition to being outdoors in Seattle - is cramped and prone to crowding. During media timeouts and so on they put little CGI-abortive mini games up on the jumbotron, including a racing game and a game where you had to pick out the XBox logo from under a bunch of Seahawks helmets that were sneakily mixed around (I think this type of game has a name, I just don't know what it is). But of course, these games paled in comparison to playing Where's Pete? with the sideline-scampering head coach. Also on the jumbotron was frequently featured a Seahawks logo with an extremely creepy glowing green eye which would periodically embiggen itself until the eye smothered the screen (at which point the logo would disappear), each time making a disturbing, metallic pounding noise. That's good for a few nightmares.

The best part of the stadium was the view it provided of the surrounding area - including a nice view of the Seattle skyline (Space Needle excluded) that I didn't think to take a picture of.

The Game Itself: The Buccaneers, by virtue of getting screwed/losing to the Lions, get a better draft pick than the Saints. The Saints, on the other hand, get to lose an away game in the first round of the playoffs. In Seattle.

I'd say the Buccaneers win this round.

Halftime: I saw the jumbotron proclaiming there was going to be some guitar-oriented competition at halftime and opted to bail and chat up my parents instead. Halftime sucks.

Getting Home: Once the game ended, people (reasonably) began to leave. My section decided this was too square and instead everyone piled into the extremely narrow, Stygian stairway and stood there watching people hug each other on the jumbotron for twenty minutes. I didn't realize this and ended up on the stairs, wedged between a woman's purse and some guy, and due to the purse I was forced to balance on one leg until the people below us finally realized they have to go to church in the morning. My back did not appreciate this.

Once everyone navigated the extremely large ramp out of the stadium and spilled out onto the streets, chaos ensued, though it was more subdued than I expected. People poured into bars like it was the end of the world. And, like before, it was a bad time to be out driving... or wearing a Saint's jersey. One group of Seahawks jersey-wearers showed their appreciation for New Orleans' contribution to Seattle culture by throwing a beer bottle at a Saints fan. In Seattle, beads are pass
