What can I say, I'm a sheep.

My format has been stolen from me! >_>

EDIT - Anyway, I'll comment on it after I finish Nausea.

However, let me back up a bit. Why am I writing this? Because it seems like the cool thing to do. xp's writing articles about his problems, Ogor's writing articles about his problems, I might as well do the same. Sounds good, right?

Incorrect. I have only one article on the whole site.

Ha!

My problem comes from getting it on paper. See, that's what I can't do. I can't form it into a coherent story. Because in my head, it's all jumbled up. There's some vague continuity, but mainly, each piece could come before or after or in the middle of any other piece. There's often no beginning, no introduction, and so forth - the vital things that make it understandable to people other than myself. Thus if I ever wish to make a career out of writing, which I do, I need to figure out a way past this. Which I seem to be unable to do.

I am rather loathe to suggest this, because I find pre-writing to be a waste of time in at least 90% of cases... However. Given that you are capable of summoning up a bunch of scenes but no progression, introduction, or whatnot, it could be helpful to you to either (a) outline those scenes or (b) actually write those scenes, then put them together, throwing in introductions, connecting scenes, and conclusions, as needed.

My favorite example is Iago, from Othello. He's called one of the greatest villains ever, but he's introduced as "Iago, the Villain".

Your edition of Orthello must really suck, because mine doesn't contain this introduction.

it must be better than the things I've belittled. Otherwise I'd be a hypocrite. So I find myself trying to out-write Shakespeare. Tolkien. Dickens.

This doesn't make sense. If everyone capable of finding fault in Shakespeare etc., had the same inferiority complex as you do, nobody would ever write anything, ever. Critics don't pick up a book and say: "Wow, this is worse than Dickens!" Nor do readers. Every book and every author should be viewed in a vacuum - it's "either you can write or you can't", not "ya gotta beat da best".

Also, the only way you'd be a hypocrite is if you refused to accept that your own work is flawed.

I used to be able to churn out page after page of, let's say, less than desirable work. Of course, this was when I was ten-twelve or so, so it was amazing for a ten-twelve year old. Unbiased parties thought it was amazing for a ten-twelve year old. I was satisfied with that.

Ditto, except my work was just plain bad.

Then I hit the... rough portion of my life, where I got offline for a few months - this is before I even knew most of you, so you won't remember this. Cross might remember it. After crawling out of my little pit of angst, I found myself unable to write. I was not satisfied with anything I wrote, and thus, I pretty much gave up. I still collected ideas, but I no longer even attempted to put it on paper.

We have/had (I'm over it now) the same problem, with one exception: yours seems to be residue from your pit of angst, whereas mine existed only while I was inside that pit of angst.

So, what pit of angst was this?

At some point about half a year to a year ago, I outgrew my "oh noes I can't write anymore" stage. Unlike what shounen anime tends to portray it as, after you hit your stunning revelation about why you need to pilot the mech, you don't suddenly become super-special-sexy-awesome at it. As absurd as it may seem, being out of practice actually makes you worse at something.

This is true. Rustiness makes you write five times worse and ten times slower!

I'll never be able to match Catcher in the Rye

...You must be the worst writer ever.

or even Evangelion or Futurama.

Those people have both matched and surpassed Catcher in the Rye. >_>

there doesn't seem to be any reasonable solution.

How about "stop thinking like that"?

Yeah, sorry. >_>;

I know, I really should try that. =/

Your edition of Orthello must really suck, because mine doesn't contain this introduction.

Both mine and my teacher's contain it, so meh.

Ditto, except my work was just plain bad.

Well, mine was terrible, just not for someone as young as I was. >_>

So, what pit of angst was this?

Combination of a lot of things, most of which I'd rather not talk about. If Cross shows up, I'm sure he'll be happy to bring it up. <_<

...You must be the worst writer ever.

Hey, I liked Catcher. =/

How about "stop thinking like that"?

I'm fully aware that it makes no sense and I should just stop thinking like that, but I seem to be unable to.

Mine's from Oxford Press. I win. >_>

Sixth grade:
I've come to the conclusion, after all this deliberation and gut spilling, that I don't really want to go to Saskatchewan. To me it seems to be a wheat heavy wasteland that freezes in the winter for no apparent reason. So, now that I got that off my back I can talk about my report.
I rest my case.

Combination of a lot of things, most of which I'd rather not talk about. If Cross shows up, I'm sure he'll be happy to bring it up. <_<

Fair enough.

Hey, I liked Catcher. =/

Perhaps you did, but it's the product of literary movement famous for churning out a bunch of crap. The book is by no means extraordinary.

but I seem to be unable to.

You'll grow out of it. >_>

I haven't even read Catcher yet (been meaning to), and I still agree with Ogor. >_>
