| Level: 49 Liberal Arts Major | http://www.thefluxnet.com/articles.php?view=189 So due to all the work I was putting into the site (lol) I didn't get to an article on Glenn Beck's Divine Destiny Restoring Honor whatever like I had intended, and when I got some free time I didn't feel like doing the research necessary to write that article, so I decided to savagely attack Kenri instead! Though this was technically submitted on Sunday, I started it on Saturday (and took a long break to watch TV) so I'm going to count it for last week and continue claiming to have been issuing a weekly article. I can do this, because I'm the webmaster. |

| Level: 43 Editor | I'm too lazy to write a whole other article about this subject - and it would really just be beating a dead horse anyway - but I feel the need to make this post to say, this is exactly what I was talking about: http://wii.ign.com/articles/112/1122068p1.html The crux of her argument seems to be: 1) I haven't read the Metroid manga. 2) I haven't played Metroid II. 3) I didn't pay any attention to Metroid Prime 2, Metroid Prime 3, Super Metroid, or Metroid Fusion. 4) I am still qualified to evaluate this character and determine if the new entry in the series keeps her character consistent with previous portrayals. And then, more specifically: 5) If six soldiers are in a unit, the five men should have to follow orders, but the one woman shouldn't have to. If the one woman WANTS to, in order to not get kicked out of the situation prematurely, well, too bad, real women never follow orders. 6) ****ing character development how does it work 7) Women in their early twenties are not allowed to show any emotions whatsoever and should always be perfectly rational. Throw in a handful of flat-out lies and wow, crazy awesome article. --- "There's a pony in the shop, but don't buy it. | Level: 49 Liberal Arts Major | I stopped reading early: The moment a cutscene begins to roll, however, she is transformed into someone completely new and unrecognizable. Someone who is insecure about what a former employer thinks of her, gets hurt when called an outsider, has serious daddy issues, and even, at times, chokes in the face of fear. The duality of her character within Other M is confusing in and of itself, and only lends to the feeling that the Samus of the cinema scenes simply doesn't belong, and just plain isn't the woman I grew up idolizing. In a videogame landscape filled with helpless princesses and brainless bimbos, the concept of a woman who was indiscernible from her male counterparts was novel to say the least. She wasn't the wide-eyed, innocent damsel-in-distress, nor was she the objectified, scantily-clad hussy (you never so much as caught a glimpse of her outside of her armored Power Suit until the end of the game). Instead, the Samus of past titles was a rare example of a female character whose actions, and not her gender, were what defined her, and who was as uncompromising, steady and in control as any other hero out there. Other M takes these formerly defining traits away from her, making her into just another generic, overly emotional female character. Where she once broke gender stereotypes, in Other M she exemplifies them. Her independence is reduced to subservience, her fearlessness to panic. I bolded the parts that, together, made me fear for humanity. ___ ~ Ogordemir ~ "The sciences have hitherto harmed us little; but some day the piecing together of dissociated knowledge will open up such terrifying vistas of reality that we shall either go mad from the revelation or flee from the light into the peace and safety of a new dark age." ~ H.P Lovecraft, The Call of Cthulhu |

| Level: 49 Liberal Arts Major | I actually recently read a feminist screed about this very idea. It may have been directed against Joss Wheden, but I'm not sure. Anyway, the premise was that, in an effort to not appear sexist, fictional portrayals of women have begun objectifying them as robotic heroes with no emotions, no fear, and wills of pure steel, so the sexism is more concealed but it's still there, in the sense that it's obvious no effort was made to generate an actual character and the woman is just there to conform to the expectations of the audience. It made a lot of sense, for a feminist screed. Then we have poor little Audrey complaining about how female video game characters should be more like one-dimensional cardboard cutout versions of their male counterparts. Score one for women!

| Level: 43 Editor | I am fascinated to be the same gender as these idiots. While a lot of the more popular stupid complaints have come from women (presumably because woman + video games = omg traffic), I've seen plenty from men as well. And the articles written by women seem to have a distressing number of replies that say something like "stupid wh0re go back to the kichen", so yeah, I think both genders are having some... issues... here. --- "There's a pony in the shop, but don't buy it.
