| Level: 49 Liberal Arts Major | There are a few obstacles, from my perspective, to getting TFN to be successful. The boards are really not a primary distinguishing feature. They're just sort of there. The site could only carve out a niche by means of SS (and potentially other games, like the version of scum I've been failing to produce for a few years) and the contribution system. The problem with that plan is that it's already surpassed by the likes of e.g. Kingdom of Loathing and Helium, respectively, just to name a few. Moreover, I'm pretty neurotic with the site's deficiencies: even if I knew anybody in Seattle I would be weary of trying to promote what is presently (and because I'm the only programmer, what will be for the foreseeable future) a very rough version of an already questionable platform. (Add to that the fact that I have no way to monetize traffic and the prospects for money leaving other peoples' pockets and entering my own are rather slim.) This is just from my perspective, though. One of you could always come up with, say, 100 new users out of the blue. But it's extremely unlikely I will be rounding up any new membership myself. EDIT: I was quite a bit more optimistic about the prospects for TFN when I was in high school and had (curiously?) a lot more patience for the drudgery of coding stuff, but since I sort of hate coding and the next 6-7 years of my life are basically spoken for already, it's all taken the perspective of "gosh I wonder how/if this would work!" rather than "maybe I can make something useful out of this void". And like I described to MA in another topic, I tend to view TFN like a sort of clubhouse instead of a potential commercial platform now. Making TFN successful (in a financial sense) requires the following three elements: (1) A much-upgraded code base. This goes without saying. (2) Some kind of marketing strategy. Since I have no funding and no way to advertise for free this would have to evolve either through word of mouth or word of mouth plus something like CafePress. In following the above, for me to be confident enough to involve myself in this process (1) would have to be pretty awesome, which is a hilarious unlikelihood. (3) Some kind of cash flow mechanism. Options are ads (which, because AdSense is closed to me, would require an enormous amount of traffic), microtransactions through the gaming arm of the Network, and/or merchandising through CafePress or an alternative, as above. Theoretically I could find some people willing to work on the site for free to get through (1) quicker, but then I run into a conflict of interests, because part of the appeal of the site for me is the opportunity to experiment on my own. That would be a real all-in move that I don't feel like bothering with. ___ ~ Ogordemir ~ "The sciences have hitherto harmed us little; but some day the piecing together of dissociated knowledge will open up such terrifying vistas of reality that we shall either go mad from the revelation or flee from the light into the peace and safety of a new dark age." ~ H.P Lovecraft, The Call of Cthulhu |

| Level: 49 Liberal Arts Major | ...like the version of scum I've been failing to produce for a few years David and I already wrote programs that pretty much play the game for us. We input the cards and the best possible combinations are printed out. --- Alestra77: you seem to have glossed over the fact that you treat all women like prostitutes Alestra77: "k, so, I bought you coffee... when do I get my handjob?"
