You know, "Rei" means more than one thing in Japanese.

It also means "zero", for instance. IIRC

and I alluded to it in the flavor text

Yes, because you expected people to think of that. Moreover, in the construction {NP}'s X, where NP is some sort of noun phrase and X is an object, X is immediately parsed as something pertained to or possessed by the NP, as we see in the following, taken from Google ("*'s *"):

PANS LABYRINTH
U.N.'s statement
Grays Anatomy
GEs Aaa
Turing's relay-based
Frink's exclamations
Corporation's S-PLUS
Insightful's S-PLUS
Google's Brazil
Groups offer
PGWs contracts
(fill in your name)'s Writing

(Notice that none of these can be re-rendered "{NP} X" without changing the meaning slightly or rendering the whole phrase completely foreign: see ?Pan Labyrinth, *Gray Anatomy, [the] U.N. statement vs. [the] U.N.'s statement, etc.)

Assuming the reader knows of NGE, the first parse of Rei's Gun will render Rei a proper noun. It makes the most sense. The idea of "Spirit Gun" doesn't enter the picture until you're told that's the intended meaning.

1. Generally, the MMORPG community, especially any sort of MMORPG community we would attract, would have at least a basic Wapanese vocabulary. They'd be able to tell you the Japanese words for "damn", "idiot", "cute", and, yes, "spirit", considering it's somewhat prominently featured in (yes, I'm going back to this) MULTIPLE fighting games and shounen anime. "Reiki", especially, is a common term, meaning "spirit energy".

These people also know of NGE, and of the character Rei. Granted, they should also be quite capable of grasping "rei = spirit", but that's not how they would process the name at first glance.

2. Do you know why Rei is named Rei? Because it means "spirit", which, if you've seen NGE (as you seem to assume everyone who's reading the name of the spell has), you'll know describes her very well. This, again, draws back to point #1 - and you've very thankfully backed it up by saying that upon hearing "Rei (nonspecific)", they will immediately go to "Rei (NGE)", at which point they will, if they're like most anime viewers, immediately go to "Rei (spirit)".

[the | a] spirit's gun != spirit gun : in one instance you have a spirit which possesses a gun, in another you have a gun whose properties denote spirituality.

Furthermore, yes, they'll probably understand that Rei means spirit, but due to the construction, they're more likely to see "Rei's Gun" and stop there.

Because I know of at least one - Void shares its name with a villain from the Sonic series as well as a Marvel supervillain.

Context clues prevent those two from being confused. The Sonic villain is not a spell that costs like 60 SP. >_>

And considering you used to play YGO, I defy you to cast the spell "Scapegoat" and not picture your cleric summoning sheep tokens.

Honestly... I don't see it that way. I chose the word scapegoat because I wanted a spell that had the caster jump out in front of the party and take one for the team. The word just seemed to fit. :\

And before you say "Yes, but YGO chose that to be clever, using the already established definition of scapegoat", I redirect your attention to point #2, where I stated that Rei's name was picked for the same general reason.

You've a point there.

EDIT: All this being said, I see these names (Rei's [gun | cannon]) are important to you, so I will keep them.

Yes, but the Wapanese crowd Kenri alluded to will most likely not know that.

I knew this, but it was not really relevant.

A valid point.

[the | a] spirit's gun != spirit gun : in one instance you have a spirit which possesses a gun, in another you have a gun whose properties denote spirituality.

True, however, you overlooked the third one, which would be something like "a gun of the spirits".

Context clues prevent those two from being confused. The Sonic villain is not a spell that costs like 60 SP. >_>

Another valid point. This is the kind of stuff I was expecting from you in the first post. <_<

EDIT: All this being said, I see these names (Rei's [gun | cannon] are important to you, so I will keep them.

Surprisingly not. I just: 1. did not get much sleep last night and am therefore irritable and 2. expected better reasoning from you, which you have now shown, so do whatever. >_>

Yeah, you're right. :\

Surprisingly not.

Ah well. I'll put them in anyway.

did not get much sleep last night and am therefore irritable

=(

I sympathize. However, I'm always irritable, so sleep doesn't really play a part in that for me.

My lord - every time I think I'm done with spells another huge set pops up to screw me over.

I have about 27 spells left, give or take a few I decide not to do. As it is, I've been skipping spells that were way the hell too complicated, and I've altered several to make them simpler (and usually far more powerful).

And I haven't even touched 75% of the items I have left.

This will take about twice as long as I expected.

Finished all the spells I intend to add in this update. Now to get to items, and consequently, database work.

(Which reminds me - I'm going to be skipping items with additional effects for this batch.)

UPDATE - February 9th, 2007

System Updates
- None at this time.

Story Updates
- None at this time.

Content Updates
- Because it might cause errors in the system, I have avoided apostrophes in spell names. Thus, Nature's Wrath is rendered Natures Wrath, etc.
- Several spells were simplified. In many cases this made them stronger.
- Trees that got nothing: Summoners, Arcane Knights, and most hybrid classes.
- Masters as a class made off like a bandit.
- Apprentices etc. got several spells.
- Samurai got a pile of items and a couple of spells.
- Bards/Dancers etc. now have spells throughout that class tree.
- Berserkers got a few spells, including Rally the Horde, which summons THE HORDE for a pretty penny.
- Horsemen etc., a woefully neglected tree, got a few magical goodies. Joust might be particularly useful, if it even works.
- Dragoons and Warlords got at least one spell each.
- Paladins got a bunch of spells and items.
- Pikemen etc. got a bunch of stuff. Crowd Control is currently not up to par with the new influx of multi-targeting spells, but it will be eventually.
- Dragon Knights are now a more-or-less legitimate class.
- Weavers etc. got some items in addition to the patently insane Magic Burst.
- Jonin got some new tricks, and Assassins got one spell, Terminal Wind.
- Sages are now playable, and if you play them enough you'll eventually get Planetary Shift, the third most expensive spell.
- Hermits got a few Squirrel-oriented spells but no items.
- Dawnbreakers got two spells, Rekindle and Nature's Wrath. The Spellbinder tree got some low-level items.
- Shamans got a few items.
- Clerics got a few items.
- Archers etc. got some spells.
- Spiremages got one spell, Freeze.
- Tamers got... one spell. Yeah: Cobra Fang.
- Liches got one spell, Lifeforce Syphon.
- Commanders got I believe one spell, Summon Soldiers.

World Updates
- None at this time.

Bug Updates
- No bugs were fixed this time, but I'm certain plenty were added!

Scheduled Updates
- [Unknown Time] A system update introducing the framework for the storyline (i.e., Quests and "cut-scenes") and fixing some problems. At this point I will introduce the first story updates.
- [Unknown Time] A large-ish world update.
- [Unknown Time] A content update in the way of monsters.

I won't be available for debugging until later today. In the meantime, post bugs in the main topic.

I'm saying it's a good thing I have another greatly developed MMORPG to occupy me, or else there'd be post long rants about this mockery of justice.

Ah, well, I can't say SS is developed, or will ever be as developed as WoW, but I can say that there'd be plenty of AK items/spells if somebody would come up with some. >_>
