Characters can now change classes at the beginning of chapters, so you can have your Cavaliers turning into Soldiers or Myrmidons or whatever
also, the requirements for Gaiden chapters require that you kill off a number of your characters
Luckily you get tons of shitty characters (JEIGAN/JAGEN)

I HAS CASTLEVANIA: ORDER OF ECCLESIA
THIS IS GOING TO SERIOUSLY IMPEDE MY VESPERIA TIME
[Spoiler for CV:OoE, click to show]"Castlevania: Order of Ecclesia is based on real battles that actually took place in Transylvania... So here's this giant enemy crab. And I drop an elevator on it for massive damage."
That attack cost me 599 US Heart Points!
Seriously though, ****ing crab, I was sitting there pounding on for like 5 minutes waiting for it to turn red and attack the elevator, dropping it on itself. Without realizing I could just jump up there and manually activate it.
Game designers, don't make bosses like this one. It's just not nice.
The earlier skeleton boss was kinda broken too. I don't know why game devs don't get this, but Konami AND Nintendo have both made this mistake. If your boss relies on grabbing something on the ceiling and using it to catapult over and behind the boss, make sure the boss ISN'T TALL ENOUGH TO KILL YOU IF YOU DO SO. I cannot stress this enough. Nintendo, your goddamn Ball & Chain Knight in Twilight Princess was harder than the final boss. EASILY. Because you couldn't ****ing do what you were supposed to be able to do. Konami, your giant skeleton boss has THE SAME PROBLEM. If the boss gets too close to you, you can't jump to reach the magnet point without it dealing touch damage. DON'T ****ING MAKE BOSSES LIKE THIS. IT IS STUPID.

He's one of the easiest bosses in the game to get a medal on, besides one other which is like they got Bomberman in my Castlevania

Or, you know, I'd like to be able to land more than two hits before having to retreat.
This could be alleviated by making the room bigger, or giving the bosses about a third of their current HP, or making bosses you don't have to run away from.
You know, like they managed to do in every other recent Castlevania.
Another solution is just to not make stupid bosses like that!

There's a boss pretty soon that you're going to absolutely hate.
IMO he's the hardest boss in the game, even worse than the optional bosses and the final boss.

Now, see, THAT was a good boss. It was hard, but I never got the feeling that it was broken. His attacks didn't do stupidly huge amounts of damage, there was no annoying magnet gimmick, and I didn't need to retreat every 5 seconds or wait for him to climb a goddamn lighthouse.
So, yeah.
I guess Order of Ecclesia has at least ONE good boss.
Mind you, Barlowe would still be one of the worst bosses if he was in, say, Dawn of Sorrow.
Or any other game with bosses that are actually good.

At least you figured out there WAS a free-roam mode. Took me like 3 hours to figure that out. >_>
But, yeah, the battle system gets better and easier as you adjust to it and get more Artes/party members/other stuff.
Eventually I figured out that Blocking doesn't exactly suck >_> <_<

It heals you, restores your TP, or provides a meager bonus to a stat for one battle. Depending on the recipe, of course. The latter isn't very useful. The former are sorta useful. However, you can only carry 15 of each ingredient, which makes it not so useful. <_<
Also, some recipes are required for certain sidequests, and you need to master every recipe with one character to access a cooking battle sidequest. (Which I am still working on, myself.)
