This theory is easily torpedoed:
1. Taub is a pussy.
2. Taub is a pussy.
3. Taub and Kutner were good friends and Taub had recently shamelessly used Kutner to advance his career; no motive.
4. The scene with Taub during the dopey music with him sitting in a chair and crying or whatever it is pussies do, that whole good friends thing, and the magic of bad writing indicate Taub was ignoring Kutner as a form of denial and trying to save the patient(s) as a substitute for Kutner, who he was unable to save. There's a psychological term for that, I think it's "being a pussy".

This show is so incredibly cheesy and ridiculous and awesome. I used to watch it when I was like 3 and it was on prime time. Also the X-Files, which was almost as cheesy but way more ridiculous.
But like all great shows on fox that's not animated it eventually turns to the stupid side.
The X-Files was missing from your list, but it adheres to this quite closely. Post-Dogget-and-Moronica X-Files was blegh.
