I think my dictionary pre-dates the use of 'poka' as 'buh bye', as that definition isn't even in there.

That's an odd way to do it. Assuming the sound is "uh" as in "run", there is no language that I can think of which represents that sound as "a"; English might have a few obscure representations, but most of the time the sound is rendered in spelling as "u", or maybe "ough". The sound represented by "a" is the schwa, as in English "about", and is actually quite different, so either way, you're getting an incorrect pronunciation. Write it normally and at least we can fathom a guess... and look up the word in a dictionary.

see, in Russian, most "O" sounds in words are pronounced "ah." Milk is pronounced: "malako" with the first syllable stressed and the 'a' as in "ma" (can't think of an English word, so I'll go with the thing Southernors say for 'mother'). Its spelling is totally different than its pronounciation. And most people don't use dictionaries. >_>

I know how it's pronounced. The technical term is an open-mid back unrounded vowel, and yes, it's in the word mother.

EDIT: Actually, it seems there are conflicting pronunciations: this paper on children's acquisition of phonemes in Russian lists it as two open back unrounded vowels with the accent on the final syllable - i.e., /mala'ko/ - whereas this friendly site lists it as /mula'ko/, where "u" stands in for an open-mind back unrounded vowel. This source agrees.

So you should write it mulako or molako if you want to be more accurate in terms of its pronunciation. But that would be stupid. So write moloko.

That means you speak the same dialect of Russian as the guy in the paper, except he put the stress on the "ko" rather than the "mo"; whereas, the others speak a different dialect, as their pronunciation is entirely different.

EDIT: Actually, for a concrete analysis, you could follow the links to both the open-mid and open vowel articles, and then follow the links to listen to the sounds. You can determine what vowels you personally use in moloko via that method.
