I "proved" this to my math teacher and he showed it to the class.

Algebra was awesome.

yes. Easy proof

0.9999999999~ = 9/10 + 9/100 + 9/1000 + ... + 9/10^n

so, you get your geometric series: Σ (9(1/10^n),n,0,∞) which equals An*(1-r^n)/(1-r) => (9/10)/(9/10) = 1

...Or...

.999~ = x
9.999~ = 10x
9 = 10x - x = 9x
1 = 9x/9 = x
1 = .999~

how do you know 9.9~ - 0.9~ is 9?

It's like 0*infinity or infinity^1 or infinity/infinity

No... It's like (9 + infinity) - infinity, because 9 + .999~ = 9.999~.

If you're talking about Pavel's babbling, I'm in precalculus, and I know more about the letter sigma than I do about the rest of his formulae.

(Funny; I suck at math, yet managed to skip a year of math and get an A(-----) in the first semester of precalculus. Must not be too tough.)

(9 + infinity) - infinity = infinity, smart one.

If you're talking about Pavel's babbling

Hey, at least I give real proofs.

Remember that formula for geometric series: a/(1-r) that you learned this year? Yea, in calc, you'll prove that formula, and do lots of fun stuff with it, like prove that 0.9~ = 1 in a non-gay way.

Yeah, Tiger's method is more "correct".

Ogor's "works", because it is right, but Tiger's right, infinity is the rebel of math, every rule that should be obvious for it to follow, it ignores, so trying to use it in proofs usually fails for some inane reason.

Ogor's is easier to follow, but if you got anal about it, you could debunk it.

Tiger's is perfectly correct, and the "true" proof, but almost no one can follow it, hell, there are people on the intarweb who can't follow Ogor's and that's basic algebra. >_>

(9 + infinity) - infinity = infinity? My God, I knew I hated math.

Remember that formula for geometric series: a/(1-r) that you learned this year?

Remember that all the fun series garbage starts in Q4 and we just finished trigonometry?

I think it's more that I can't wrap my mind around two entirely different numbers being the same thing. But I'm also the person who argues that you could, theoretically, add something to infinity to make it larger, so don't mind me.

I think it's more that I can't wrap my mind around two entirely different numbers being the same thing.

I'm tempted to be an ass, and say, "They aren't different though. They are equal.", but I know what you meant by it.

>_>

But I'm also the person who argues that you could, theoretically, add something to infinity to make it larger, so don't mind me.

I said earlier in the topic. Infinity is a rebel. It doesn't play by the rules. It just is. There's probably a reason for it, but I like my way better.

Infinity - infinity can be any amount of things, depending on what infinity stands for. Because you can't actually be at infinity, you can only go to it.

And Ken, he's dead already.
