I've been reading a lot of Freud lately, and must do an RPG! What my RPG ideas have to do with Freud is absolutely nothing, but I'd like that to be out there.

Make HP "Eros/Libido" and ATK "Thanatos", and then somehow incorporate Id/Superego/Ego as a separate system... Maybe an alignment system.

There, then you can market it as revolutionary despite the only difference being changed names. >_>

Yeah, Freud's works have been out there for almost a century. They're hardly revolutionary now. I was thinking more of an RPG that didn't work with stats but rather as a story.

The few times I've tried making an RPG, they haven't been based around stats. The stats have been there, yes, but they're rarely the deciding factor in a battle/puzzle/what have you. >_>

Thanatos > Id for a substitute for ATK.

I still say making Ego an alignment system with Superego and Id playing sort of the roles of Dark Side and Light Side similar to games like KotOR would work far better than implementing it into ATK/DEF/SPD

Actually, superego and ego should be switched around in that. The ego is what regulates between doing what the id wants to do and what the superego wants to do. Granted, superego shouldn't be speed either, but ego for defense makes more sense.

Getting back to the topic at hand:

My basic idea is that the game takes place in two "levels", the sky and the sea. No matter which you're in, the basic idea to go from island to island (the sky has floating islands ala Baten Kaitos/Skies of Arcadia) and doing whatever - capturing bounty-heads, defeating pirates, upgrading your ship, searching for treasure, etc.

In the beginning you'd buy a small, one person airship or boat, and be immediately in debt. After working off the initial debt with some starter missions, you can upgrade your ship and eventually get a Dual Engine, converting your airship or boat into an all purpose ship, which would mean immediate access to both the sky and the ocean. From then on you go around, earn money, upgrade your ship with new parts, find a crew, and battle other players.

Your character, your ship, and each crew member of yours would each of stat values - however, simple "stat vs. stat" match ups would be frowned upon in favor of actual tactics. If you have no chance of beating the enemy's ship directly, you could try boarding it and fighting the crew, of course. However, you could also choose to steer into clouds to lose the enemy and ambush them later.

In addition to your normal attack, defense, speed, luck, intelligence, and what-have-you stats, you'd also have skill stats, such as Bartering/Trading, Sailing/Captaining/Direction, Mapmaking, Pillaging/Theft, Marksmanship, Cooking, Doctoring, Stargazing, Hunting, Persuasion, etc. If you've played Runescape, think that, only less tedious and stupid.
