That's likely because it has been romanized as both dpending on whther it's the Manga or Anime. In the [English] Anime, it's Sohryu, in the english Manga, it's Soryu.
See now, here's our first problem. I believe you meant to say "3rd" as opposed to "2nd".
If it's a problem, it's because I forgot to mention how Asuka v Kaworu isn't fair, because Kaworu shows up in Ep24, Asuka shows up in Ep8, Kaworu only needs to be awesome for a short period of time, Asuka is in the show for 2/3 of the series.
Another problem. You seem to be under the impression that Kaworu is the best character in the series, which he clearly isn't. The character you're thinking of is Ritsuko.
Kaworu = Asuka > Gendo > Ritsuko
No, she seems to be in 4th, and honestly, Kaji, Fuyutsuki, Rei (Ep1-23.5), and Shinji are all right around there, particularly the first three, so even the 4 is ambiguous.
