Thankfully the password I use for there is the only place that I use that password, so I'm not too worried.

Well, that's certainly odd; but worries about password security shouldn't be too prominent, anyway, unless the storage system was completely inept, like it is here.

Last night, some poser named Optikal "hacked" LUElinks. It was an attack in several steps:

1. He played with our usernames, changing them from Llamaguy to LlamaGAY to i eat cake to other things, including some sort of hash.

2. He started messing with topics by changing the names of a bunch of sticky topics and clearing out whole boards. Then, as people made new topics, he began changing their titles.

3. He probably got tired of the hacking - which by then had become very old for everyone -, so he just banned everyone and assigned them to the same plea topic, which zoomed through 64 pages before LL died. (Incidentally, the plea topic might be the fastest-growing topic in LL's history. Several of the pages were composed entirely of same-time posts.)

During the hacking, there was some concern that logging out would prevent you from logging back in, as some people believed the users table in the database was truncated. Though this was false - people were having trouble logging back in because they were using their old usernames, not the ones the hacker assigned everybody in [1] above -, it didn't stop people from trying to trick people into logging out.

Ultimately, it seems the episode was permitted by an exploit in another one of the sites Llamaguy was hosting on the server alongside LL. The hacker was able to gain direct access to the database through the server itself.

EDIT/ASIDE: I, being a pathetic life form with nothing useful to do with my life, actually witnessed the whole thing, from the very beginning up until LL died completely and redkillroy told us Llamaguy had risen from his eternal slumber for the purpose of making things normal again.

Why do all hackers nowadays fail at life?

In all fairness, he couldn't really have done much. The database was for the most part backed up, and whatever data couldn't be restored automatically could be restored in a relatively short time manually. In order to do something really interesting, you have to have access to the source code itself, and I don't think he did.

LUELINKS? Where the hell is that at?

Don't exist, foo'.

Yes, but he could've at least dismantled the boards one by one or something. I mean, changing user names? WTF does that accomplish? o_O;

LL is liable to dissolve into a violent, chaotic mass of enthusiastic lunatics at the slightest provocation. Something as crazy as everyone's username changing suddenly, topics disappearing, etc., turned the main board into a cheap imitation of /b/ in short order.

Nobody goes to the other boards, so they were fine.

You can't.

Seriously, new moderators are only chosen a few times a year, and the minimum requirements for applying are very steep. Even so, hundreds apply, but only a few are selected. If you seriously want to be a moderator, you'll need to be an active, TOS-following board user for well over a year to even be considered. Pestering the current moderators or administrators to become a moderator essentially guarantees that you won't be selected

LL is closed; you can only get an account there if you get an invite from someone on the inside, and I don't think too many of us can afford invites. Especially now that we can't buy them the easy way.

Anyone else have problems changing their password?

Not me. LG said there might be some difficulty, but then he made another sticky telling us to "try now".

I'm still not sure if I'd want an account there.

On one hand I doubt it could hurt.

On the other, I still get pissed when LL goes down and idiots flood LUE talking about how it sucks.

LUE may be weakened by SecLUEsion, but it's still awesome.

LL is essentially LUE, except less stable and even more ambiguously legal. All the anti-LUE spirit is derived from the same elitism that makes LUE great.

It sends me back to the password edit page, saying the "Old password is incorrect" or some sort of manner like that. I know the password is right, because when I logout and log back in with that password it logs me in, but redirects me to the password edit p
