I lost a game of Scrabble over this, so I'm asking you fellars. I always thought a proper noun was: a noun that is the name of a specific individual, place, or object.
And since "Jains" can describe any group of adherents to Jainism it was therefore a common noun, although still capitalized by some obscene convention. The argument of my opponents was that "Jains", "Christ" and "Islamists" were all capitalized in the dictionary, so they all must be proper nouns. A counter-point to this was that there are other words which are derived from a proper noun that sometimes are and sometimes aren't capitalized, Christlike or draconian, for example, so their argument was silly and I was right. Anyway, I'd like some kind of excuse for why I lost, or even the truth, as horrible as that might be. So anyone know?

Proper nouns describe particular entities: the United States, Jesus Christ, the Necronomicon. Because "Jains", whatever the hell that is, is not the name of something specific, it is not a proper noun. As a rule of thumb, capitalization is a convention of style, not a factor in grammar, so don't use that as a grammatical argument.

also how does the lexical category of a word affect scrabble plz

That much is obvious. What Jainism is is less obvious. Crazy Indian religions and all that.

How is it a stupid rule? If that rule weren't there, people could play, like, "Kqrrjiw" and say that it's a name, so it's allowed. <_<

That's silly. For people names, use a naming dictionary. For other Proper Nouns, use an encyclopedia. Hell, even Google works as a reference. "Kqrrjiw" gets zero hits.
