| Level: 49 Liberal Arts Major | http://rawstory.com//news/2008/Missouri_Police_taser_injured_boy_19_0726.html So some probably deranged kid "falls" off a highway overpass and ends up on the ground with a broken back and without part of his heel. Sounds like your everyday attempted suicide and/or schizophrenic outburst, eh? The police apparently believed this was too routine, so when they showed up they decided to taser the guy for, I suppose, the funnies. Really. The reasons offered are just as meaningful: "He refused to comply with the officers" I couldn't possibly imagine why a guy who just fell thirty feet onto some concrete wouldn't be in a rush to comply with orders! "officers had to deploy their Tasers in order to subdue him" If you have to use tasers to 'subdue' a teenager with a broken back, what do you have to use to 'subdue' a healthy adult? A howitzer? "He is making incoherent statements" Tasers: They Improve Motor Coordination "he's also making statements such as, 'Shoot cops, kill cops,' things like that. So there was cause for concern to the officers." Let's give the police the benefit of the doubt and say he actually was saying that. Was he armed? No. Was his back broken? Yes. Was there "cause for concern"? Only if that concern includes depriving some schmuck of the experience of being tasered. [From the video, the police were also concerned about keeping "this guy out of traffic" and to "keep him from getting hurt".] The way you keep a guy with a broken back from wandering into traffic is to taser him. The way you keep him from getting hurt is, not coincidentally, also to taser him. The undeniable logic that got us this far serves us well up until the very end! But it's not until you get to the last few lines that you really start to appreciate this police department's absolute dedication to justice. To quote: Ozark police say that while there remains unanswered questions in the case, the reason for the use of the Taser is not one of them. Oh yeah. ___ ~ Ogordemir ~ "The sciences have hitherto harmed us little; but some day the piecing together of dissociated knowledge will open up such terrifying vistas of reality that we shall either go mad from the revelation or flee from the light into the peace and safety of a new dark age." ~ H.P Lovecraft, The Call of Cthulhu |
