I've always wondered why the record industry didn't ever consider diverting the funds it spends on legal bills with the RIAA to developing their own, presumably superior filesharing platforms whereby they could profit from advertising revenue and/or iTunes-like music sales.

Oh, that's right. It's because the RIAA makes a killing in extortion.
