| Level: 44 DSB Moderator | Since Scifi is basically the only channel I watch regularly, it's the only show I can really critique. Every show has its flaws, but this one has the Star Gate name attached to it, which is basically what Scifi built itself around for the past decade and a half or so. With how successful the original series was and how... well, Atlantis was ok too, but not quite the same... Universe is completely different. It's like they wanted to take the backstory from the original and Atlantis and put the writers for Battlestar Galactica on it. First off the cast. Each series in Star Gate has a charismatic leader, like MacGuyver, John Crichton, um... what's his name from Atlantis, and a supporting cast of characters with their own somewhat unique attributes and such. Universe does not. What it has is a ring of conspiracy for the sole purpose of adding drama to the show. There are less than five characters on the show that actually matter to the story, which is disappointing for a show who has the name "Universe" in it. A lot of the times, it doesn't matter which character they plug into a scene, it really doesn't matter who is doing what. They're equally forgettable. Although I did cheer at the end of the first season when that dick got knocked out and left for dead. Too bad they had to bring him back. Second is the camera. It's constantly shifting, doing weird profiles and framing, all of which is not needed but still gives me a headache. There is not a single scene where the camera does not move or shake. That's not a special effect, it's incompetence. Third is the setting. Sure it's unique in the series that the cast is stuck on a ship that they can't control, but there's only so much you can do with a setting like that. I give it another season at best unless something happens. --- "Critics of lemmings tend to overlook how awesome it is to run off of tall things." |
