I am totally stealing Kenri's topic idea except replacing video games with anime music. And I don't care!

There are lots of animes I want to watch and even more I know nothing about. So I thought a good way to learn more about them would be to share some favorite openings and endings. I'll be trying to post one each day, but you're welcome to post whatever you want whenever you want really.

Here's a format I'll be using. Change it up however you want though.

Music Title - Anime Name: Number Opening/Ending
Link to video of opening/ending

Thoughts on it.

Music Title - Anime Name: Full Version
Link to video of full music piece

Lyrics in English if possible to find.

That last part is in case someone likes the piece enough to want to hear its full version and what it translates to. Anyhow, I'll start things off.

Duvet - Serial Experiments Lain: Opening
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gnGppxxyN94

This is my personal favorite anime opening out of all of the ones I've seen. It just fits the premise so well and sets the perfect mood. When I first started Serial Experiments Lain, I was a bit skeptical since I knew nothing about it at the time. Then I saw the opening and was dedicated to finishing it from that point on. It took quite a bit of time to actually do so, but I never gave up on doing it.

Serial Experiments Lain is probably the most confusing, but one of the most interesting, animes I've seen. You might notice that Lain's the only character to show up frequently in this opening. That's because there really aren't any other characters that take a huge spot in the show. Alice is the only one I can think of who comes onto the screen a lot. That's not to say there aren't characters who do important things, they just aren't around much. So I don't see that as a con to this opening.

The scenes shown are intriguing enough to catch interest but never come close to ruining just what is going on in here. And the music is amazing. I love listening to it. It's strange to have such a good English opening, they aren't that easy to come by. And while I like all of it, my favorite parts are when she appears in all of the televisions and the very end, where she just keeps on walking despite the huge WTH most people would feel in a situation like that.

Duvet - Serial Experiments Lain: Full Version

And you don't seem to understand
A shame you seemed an honest man
And all the fears you hold so dear
Will turn to whisper in your ear
And you know what they say might hurt you
And you know that it means so much
And you don't even feel a thing

I am falling, I am fading
I have lost it all

And you don't seem the lying kind
A shame then I can read your mind
And all the things that I read there
Candle lit smile that we both share
And you know I don't mean to hurt you
But you know that it means so much
And you don't even feel a thing

I am falling, I am fading, I am drowning
Help me to breathe
I am hurting, I have lost it all
I am losing
Help me to breathe

I considered making a topic like this, but then I decided I'd use up all my material in like a month (and I don't really watch anime anymore so there's no new material coming in), and plus I really didn't want to have to keep up with another daily topic.

That said, I'll probably still contribute... occasionally. <_<;

Dream Island Obsessional Park - Paranoia Agent: Opening
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-anabfAg06U

Apparently it also goes by the name Dream Wild Obsessional Park. I couldn't get a reading on which was correct.

I'm going to be honest even if it makes me feel like a wuss: this is probably the creepiest anime opening I've ever seen. It probably doesn't seem that way by looking at it, but the way all of those people are laughing, laughing, laughing with absolutely no trace of actual happiness in their expressions... Brrr.

That said, I really enjoy this one. The song is great too. Then you find what the lyrics translate to. Some make it even creepier. Yay! (That's just an opinion though, because when I think mushroom cloud I think... ...yeah.)

I actually feel a bit awkward posting this after Serial Experiments Lain because they kind of reside in the same vein of anime. In other words, they're mind screws. Lain is a lot more so than Paranoia Agent but the principle stands. Either way, they're great animes and I'd recommend them to anyone who doesn't mind having their brains picked.

Raaiiyaa ra ra i yo ra a magnificent mushroom cloud in the sky
Raaiiyaa ra ra i yo ra on an afternoon of small birds eating feed on a path

Touching our hands to a lawn dappled with light, let's you and I talk
Look, over a lunch bench, my dream will bloom
Take the roar of the sea into your heart; submerge your depression
Stretch a bridge to tomorrow; never worry about any tsunamis

Raaiiyaa ra ra i yo ra such a magnificent jet stream
Raaiiyaa ra ra i yo ra on an afternoon of people going as popularity dictates

When I smile for a moment and take your hand, let's you and I take a walk
Listen, the wind erases even the voice that says, "There's nothing more that can be done"

Without caring about tomorrow, leave the future to me
Lock up your heart; never believe in any avalanches

Raaiiyaa ra ra i yo ra a rain of flames I'm used to seeing in my dreams
Raaiiyaa ra ra i yo ra on an afternoon where I awaken by an office window

Enticed by a lawn dappled with light, let's you and I head out
Look, over a lunch bench, my dream will bloom

Listen to the wind blowing in the grass; discard your depression
Believe that tomorrow will be sunny too; never worry about having any dreams

Raaiiyaa ra ra i yo ra a magnificent mushroom cloud in the sky
Raaiiyaa ra ra i yo ra an afternoon of small birds eating feed on a path
Raaiiyaa ra ra i yo ra a dream reared on a lunch bench
Raaiiyaa ra ra i yo ra oh, an afternoon born on a day dappled with light

Tank - Cowboy Bebop
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T6zDfxZ4NcE

Do I even need to explain this choice? The best anime opening theme for the 2nd best anime ever created.

Cowboy Bebop is a must watch for anyone into anime, especially the English dub. The series' director has even stated he preferred the English voices!

I've heard all sorts of good things about Cowboy Bebop's opening. Since I'm already dedicated to the idea of watching it, I will wait until I pop my CDs in so I can see it there. That and this computer just sucks. >_> But thumbs up.

Yeah, I'm kind of in the same boat as Kenri here, only it's probably an even smaller boat, and if I tried to get involved we'd probably destroy each other's material. So I'm probably going to stay out of this. >_>

As for Tank, I'm not sure I ever fully got the hype. Bebop is awesome, yes, and a must watch. But Tank? It's good, yes, but best ever? I don't think I ever really thought that. Personally, I'd probably give that to Rise from Ghost in the Shell SAC 2nd GIG.

*WARNING: The following opening has full girl nudity with non-censored breasts. It is advised that you watch it alone, or if you are not comfortable with that, listen to the full version and leave it at that. YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED.*

Lilium - Elfen Lied: Opening
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=00PzuuuLHJU

This, on the other hand, is definitely the weirdest opening I've ever seen. Just... what the heck is all of that supposed to be? Why mannequins? They're freaky darn it. And that color scheme makes me uneasy. It has a really unsettling effect.

Of course, this is also one of the most R rated anime openings ever. I mean, with other R rated anime, I could at least show the opening. But this? Hello there naked girl. ._.;;;

On the other hand, the song is one of my absolute favorites. It's Latin and incredibly pretty to listen to. So even if you're leery about the naked girl thing, check out the full version. It's amazing.

...At least they didn't include the gore and flying off limbs in the opening, I suppose. <_<

The mouth of the just shall meditate wisdom
And his tongue shall speak judgement

For when proved he shall receive the crown of life

How benevolent, how comforting,

Loop - Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicle: First Ending
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BpMRTIi0PHs

Since I hadn't posted any endings yet, here's one. It was kind of hard to choose between the opening and the ending since I like both. I've only watched the first ones though, so I'm not sure how the others fare.

I wound up going with this one because I think this ending is one of the best I've seen for displaying true love. It's a beautiful song and the animations with it really reinforce how much Syaoran and Sakura love each other. CLAMP in general can be lulzy in the romance category, but I think they did a great job with Syaoran and Sakura in this one. Mainly because they set up a totally horrible scenario. "Save the girl you love and have her forget you forever, or don't save her and have her leave your life anyway. You're screwed either way!" The question through all this is will their strong bonds prevail? And I think the last part especially, with their totally joyful expressions when embracing, fits it well.

Amazing how many people forget these two are the main pairing. Sorry yaoi fangirls, Fai/Kurogane isn't the focus here!

Loop - Tsubasa Reservoir Chronicle: Full Version

Hey, while this town is covered by twilight,
The morning sun is shining down somewhere else in this world.
As that flower withers away in your hand,
A little seed probably falls into the ground somewhere.

If the trodden soil is called a path,
Then is shutting my eyes love?

If our star was flat, the two of us wouldn't have met.
We were running without slowing down,
As if from each other. No matter how far apart we are now,
We will surely face each other again in this revolving miracle.

Hey, when the twilight passes from this town,
Take my tears away too.

If a story of words is called a novel,
Then are these words that can't reach it my dream?

Carried by fallen leaves floating in the river that flows without faltering,
Became clouds with the sea and fell with the rain,
I will raise this seed that fell near the distant you.
If only you would notice me from your distant location.

Because our star revolves without stopping,
The sceneries outside the tiny opened window,
And the flower I loved, we will surely face each other again,
In this revolving miracle, in this sprouting season,
We will surely face each other again.
Round and round I go,
Round and round around you.

Kinjirareta Asobi - Rozen Maiden: Opening
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oyGRtbx6_uY

Rozen Maiden is one of my favorite animes. The plot is questionable, but the characters are so endearing, and the art style intriguing to the point that I got quickly hooked. This opening is just perfect for Rozen Maiden. It captures the feeling of the anime without flaw.

The song itself has some... interesting lyrics, but they are in place as well. What I find the best is the tone and feel of the song, which is, simply put, right for the art style. It's also good enough for me to listen to frequently by itself.

Note that this is the first season of Rozen Maiden. It has a few other openings, but none for the first season besides this. The other seasons have additional subtitles. I will make that distinction for other anime in similar categories too. As in, if I were to post the second season's opening, I would call it by its official title as well.

Put on the collar of roses, and bite upon the silver chain
Another one will die tonight--you are despicable
Kneel down and lick the bitter drops of love
A blue dressage performed for the Angels

Within the casket called Myself, my soul yet moves
Torn wings revive in the moonlight and grow wet
More than darkness solitude is to be feared
Under the Cross, let us indulge in the proof of our union

Taking off the rose handcuffs, and holding each others white wrists
It is the miracle of our embrace--you are beloved
Kneel down and offer the painful words of love
A red arabesque soaking the bandages

Even if it's a sin, say that you love me with your forbidden lips

The World is a looming castle, its gates opened by God
In that way I will lead you, and if you fill up my eyes
More gently than anyone call out my name
When that happens you will know the meaning of eternity

Cross the rose rings and tie the leather ribbon
It's a ball held in the Room of Mirrors--everything is maddening
Go astray and be enlightened in the history of turning love
A black marriage decorated with tears

I hate lies--tell me you love me with chaste lips

Put on the collar of roses, and bite upon the silver chain
Another one will die tonight--you are despicable
Kneel down and lick the bitter drops of love
A blue dressage performed for the Angels

Taking off the rose handcuffs, and holding each others white wrists
It is the miracle of our embrace--you are beloved
Kneel down and offer the painful words of love
A red arabesque soaking the bandages

Say that you truly love me with a pure kiss!

Disillusion - Fate Stay Night: First Opening
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VQvs2OzJF0U

Fate Stay Night has two openings for the anime. Both are good graphically, but the second one's song is a big step below this one, IMO. So I went with this one to share.

It does a nice job of showing most of the major characters, which I always enjoy in an opening. The part that syncs best with the song itself, for me at least, is where Saber shows up. I always picture her standing like that when I hear this piece.

If I have any complaints about it, I'd say this doesn't sound like music that should go with a battle, and a couple of the opening clips are fight scenes. But this really isn't a big enough issue to detract from it. Other than Lancer/Archer and Rider, there aren't that many action scenes at the start. It also leaves out the comedy, thankfully, because the second opening has a comedy scene which really bugs me due to how out of place it feels. Is it in the anime? Yeah, comedy's in there. But it has no business in an opening that sounds like the two here.

In any case, I really need to play Fate Stay Night. I'm hoping to when I get back home.

Disillusion - Fate Stay Night: Full Version
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I4poryDakX0

My cry cannot reach the shadows I dreamt of on that day
No matter how I depict myself tomorrow, I am drenched in wishes that cannot disappear

Catch the fallen scattered fragments with those hands
Hold my swaying heart, and leap towards the night

Because even if I am depending on someone, there is nothing else that I wish for
"My true self is right here", don't close your eyes

Spread things which look like junk into the wind, things such as that nostalgic smile
"No matter how much I pray for myself tomorrow", those answers going towards the distance will still fade

Before I completely decay
And become a frozen body and a flake of my feelings, lets leap past the night

Because even if I am depending on someone, there is nothing else that I wish for
"My true self is right here", don't close your eyes

To live for the sake of someone, wouldn't it be nice if we let this moment count for everything?
Lets gently throw our fake selves away, and just be who we are

Higurashi no Naku Koro ni - Higurashi no Naku Koro ni: Opening
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nRtsIJXrhqc

Yeah, the song has the title of the anime. No, that wasn't me being lazy or something.

Out of what I've seen anime wise, Elfen Lied was probably the goriest. But it's in a hilarious manner, so over the top that I can't help but laugh as people's heads explode. The appealing part of Elfen Lied is the characters and story behind it. No, if I want serious gore, Higurashi's the place to go. (Which I don't, mind you, but I just wanted to set up that distinction.)

This is another anime based off a visual novel that I haven't gotten to play. It does a great job of being creepy in general, and is the only anime up to this point where I have had to look away while watching due to how disturbing something was.

[Spoiler for Higurashi no Naku Koro ni, click to show]I am referring to when a girl gets three of her fingernails ripped off. O. U. C. H. No wonder she went a bit crazy after that... (Okay there's more to it than that but UGH. *Shudder*)
</spoiler>

This opening captures the eeriness of the anime perfectly. If you can avoid being squicked by anime violence, including but not limited to a girl impaling her head on a knife, I highly recommend it. It has some amazing plot twists and really fleshed out characters. One of my favorite series despite not being a gore-loving person. The opening actually foreshadows some things as well, making it fun to come back and watch again after you learn more about it.

Higurashi no Naku Koro ni (When Cicadas Cry) - Higurashi no Naku Koro ni: Full Version
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aDM0P6TH1JI

Behind where I looked back (Who's in the front?)
I raised my claws at the darkness (and ripped the night apart)

Raindrops turn into droplets of blood
and run down my cheeks
If there isn't a place for me to return anywhere anymore

Take these fingers, my fingers
I'll take all your fingers away
To the unopenable forest where cicadas cry
There's no turning back anymore

People disappear one by one (blue flames)
On the other side of the darkness (the morning won't come anymore)

With countless wriggling and stretching hands in the mirror,
Come on, lure someone here

Oni-san, come here, to where my hands clap
No matter how you run away, I'll catch you
The voice that was coming from the animal trail
where cidadas cry, is no more

Take these fingers, my fingers
I'll take all your fingers away
To the unopenable forest where cicadas cry
There's no turning back anymore

Oni-san, come here, to where my hands clap
No matter how you run away, I'll catch you
The voice that was coming from the animal trail
where cidadas cry, is no more

(Translator's Note: In one of the traditional Japanese children's play, the "Oni" covers his or her eyes with a blindfold, and tries to catch the other players just by the sound of their hands clapping. This line is repeatedly said by the other players to encourage the "Oni" to come and try to get them.)

Cruel Angel's Thesis - Neon Genesis Evangelion: Opening
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A62011nyXNI

Everyone's probably seen or at least heard this opening at some point. It's one of the more famous ones. I heard it before I started watching Evangelion, though it was a remix that someone gave me.

To be honest, I'm not sure it fits Evangelion that much, but boy is it a good song. I always enjoyed listening to it. By this point it's also sort of an icon for Evangelion as a whole, so I can't exactly say it should be changed either.

My favorite part is probably at the forty to fifty second mark. All of it does a good job of hyping up what's to come though. Lots of action sequences and flashes of foreshadowing clips. They throw a bunch of terms that you won't immediately recognize, and that got me interested my first time watching. This is actually one opening where I think I prefer the TV version to the full, but I'd have to listen to the full some more before making a conclusion. Usually I like the full more, but in this case... *Shrug* Not to say it's BAD, it just sounds a bit different.

So yeah, I can see why this became iconic. Good opening.

Cruel Angel's Thesis - Neon Genesis Evangelion: Full Version
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Do4ktA87qQ

Like a cruel angel,
young boy, become the legend!

A blue wind is now
knocking at the door to your heart, and yet
you are merely gazing at me
and smiling.

Something gently touching--
you're so intent on seeking it out,
that you can't even see your fate yet,
with such innocent eyes.

But someday I think you'll find out
that what's on your back
are wings that are for
heading for the far-off future.

The cruel angel's thesis
will soon take flight through the window,
with surging, hot pathos,
if you betray your memories.
Embracing this sky [universe] and shining,
young boy, become the legend!

Sleeping for a long time
in the cradle of my love
The morning is coming when you alone will be called
by a messenger of dreams.

Moonlight reflects off
the nape of your slender neck.
Stopping time all throughout the world
I want to confine them, but...

So if two people being brought together by fate
has any meaning,
I think that it is a "bible"
for learning freedom.

The cruel angel's thesis.
The sorrow then begins.
You held tight to the form of life
when you woke up from that dream.
You shine brighter than anyone else.
Young boy, become the legend!

People create history
while weaving love.
Even knowing I'll never be a goddess or anything like that,
I live on.

The cruel angel's thesis
will soon take flight through the window,
with surging, hot pathos,
if you betray your memories.
Embracing this sky and shining,
young boy, become the legend!

Fukai Mori - Inuyasha: Second Ending
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0wJNzxh9r30

This is actually what got me into anime. No joke. It wasn't Inuyasha itself, though I was interested enough in the first episode I watched. But when I saw the ending, I was hooked. The song just struck me so powerfully. It remains one of my favorite Japanese songs to this day.

As for the animation, it isn't too special. Some generic shots of the cast, not bad but not worth commenting much on. What I do approve of is the star of it, Sesshomaru. This is sort of an ending focused on him, and since he's easily the best character in Inuyasha, that makes this ending superior to any other in the series. (I'm not counting movies in this because I've only seen one of them.) As a funny note, when I first saw it, I had no idea who Sesshomaru was, so I was left wondering if Inuyasha had an alter ego or something. lawlz.

Fukai Mori (Deep Forest) - Inuyasha: Full Version
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LHg9AzBI2QM

I'm sure that the heart I left behind
still lies hidden in the heart of the deep, deep forest.

Exhausted, without the strength to search
people vanish into the infinite darkness.

As we live on,
we lose a little bit more.
Shrouded in falsehoods and lies,
we stand frozen to the spot, unable to cry out

The days pass by and change,
without us even realizing how blue the sky really is.

Overcoming that made-up scheme, we live the present,
and our rusted hearts begin to beat again!

If we can find the rhythm of time, we can fly once again

We live our lives
wandering to the ends of the earth.
Believing in you, now I begin my journey with you,
in search of the light.

As we live on,
we lose a little bit more.
Shrouded in falsehoods and lies,
we stand frozen to the spot, unable to cry out

We live our lives
wandering to the ends of the earth.
Closing off
the way back,
we walk on for eternity.

We live our lives standing frozen to the spot,
unable to cry out, for eternity...

Inuyasha revived anime in Canada during 2003 basically. It doesn't shock me so much. Inuyasha's first season was actually decent. It's just that after that it goes to complete shit and filler hell.

I think Dragonball Z is what really got me into animu. For a 10-year-old child it was extremely epic to watch.

There was another good show for getting people into animu though...

My Will is probably my favorite Inuyasha ED in terms of animation. Love that Ferris wheel.

For just the song choice, it's like a threeway tie between Fukai Mori, Dearest, and Every Heart. The actual anime may be mediocre at best, but it has some damn good music! <_<

It's not that it's Inuyasha, Epy, it's that the same flipping ending got us into it. >_> I do like the music overall. My Will is a nice ending too.

SAMURAI PIZZA CATS

...Yeah it never really goes away after you see it. Way to get it in my head forever Epyon. (Livestream educated me in this regard, in case anyone wonders how I know of it.)

...Now I'm trying to remember what caused me to start watching anime.

I'm not sure I can remember if it was any particular anime. I think it was just Toonami in general. I can still vaguely remember the whole plot with TOM.

And that doesn't really narrow it down.

I remember Bebop, Gundam Wing, Gundam SEED, Inuyasha, Zoids, Kenshin, DBZ. ...But which was first? I can't recall. I think it was Gundam Wing, but, I dunno.

As for Inuyasha, Come is the best ending, I have no doubt of this. Fukai Mori is second, and also amazing. I think I ranked Every Heart 3rd. Can't recall what I preferred between My Will and Dearest for 4th/5th.

to be technical my first anime was Sailor Moon because it's the first one that was shown in Canada ever

but i won't count that because it didn't really get me into anime, just incredibly nonsensical plots.

Come? Needs more Sesshomaru TBQH.

But that is quite something, that for such a mediocre anime it has so many good music choices. The openings are good too.

My first anime was Pokemon, but that didn't get me into anime because I didn't know Pokemon WAS an anime. Digimon, then Card Captors, then... Uh, probably Inuyasha came after those three, and the ending hooked me.

*WARNING: The following opening has brief flashes of magical girl nudity. In other words, it's not very revealing, but you may want to be cautious around others. Nowhere near as adult-oriented as Elfen Lied's.*

Eternal Blaze - Magical Lyrical Girl Nanoha A's: Opening
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C19C1ns_kcM

Magical Lyrical Girl Nanoha is, to this point, my favorite anime, mainly for the characters. I got attached to them very quickly; Fate herself is my favorite anime character so far.

All of the openings for the three seasons (there's one for the first, one for the second, and two for the third) are great. This one is for the second season, which is my favorite season, and fittingly this is my favorite of the openings. It's action packed, shows all the important characters, has some good battle scenes, and the song is fantastic. Very high on my list overall.

One of the cool things to note is that (the Japanese) voice actor of Fate sung the openings, while the voice actor for Nanoha sung the endings. I really liked that touch!

The place where I got the translation for this song noted that it sounds like Fate talking to Nanoha, while the first opening was Nanoha to Fate. It's an interesting idea. Not sure if it's true or not, but I can see what that person's getting at.

Resonating in the far sky are your prayers turning into miracles.

My overflowing tear drops dissolved into the blue midnight,
and without hesitation, I was drawn in and met you in a warm encounter.
Your honest words where as white as now,
I collected my iron feathers and started to move.

Each time you get hurt, you become nicer.
I just want to protect that smile of yours till the end

Come? Needs more Sesshomaru TBQH.

Everything in Inuyasha needed more Sesshomaru. And I meant the songs, obviously.

(Actually, I think Yu-Gi-Oh showed up in between Card Captors and Inuyasha for me.)

Since you said ending, I figured you meant the actual ending clips, not the songs. Out of what I've heard, I'd probably rank them Fukai Mori>My Will>Come>Every Heart>Dearest, and seeing as I like Dearest too, that says a lot.

(Actually, I think Yu-Gi-Oh showed up in between Card Captors and Inuyasha for me.)

Oh darn, I knew something was being forgotten. Yu-Gi-Oh came between Card Captors and Inuyasha for me too.

Gundam 08th MS Team Opening
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iE4ELJIHwgw

This is a unique gundam series because for once it's not about ace pilots fighting endless series of mooks or other ace pilots. The people in this series are almost mooks themselves, and it's a real change of pace to see them have to actually think through battles as normal people.

It's also Romeo & Juliet with giant robots, so if you don't like it you're just retarded lol! Recommended for everyone to watch, but keep in mind that the final episode is beyond shit.

Have you ever wanted to see giant robots mixed with Dragonball Z?

No?

Then you don't know SHIT about anime, fuckface. This opening and show is awesome and will make you feel awesome.

SHINING FINGERRRRRR!!!!

Under Star - Hajime no Ippo
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XAAB5A2ZBaU

Best opening for the best shonen sports anime ever created. It's a great show as almost all the characters are believable and few are downright unlikable. The only drawback is that the series is 76 episodes followed by a movie, an OVA, and a 26-episode sequel, and has still not covered even half of the manga storyline, barely.

Long series but worth keeping up with if you enjoy animu. There are a lot of episodes but they're about 20 minutes each. Be sure to watch it subbed, the dub of it makes me want to die.
