For those who don't know, it's a thing where people attempt to write a 50,000 word novel in one month.

Today's the 2nd, so I should be at over 3000 words.

Instead, I'm at about 500.

...

This is gonna suck.

Somebody tried this in my senior year of high school. I forgot how it turned out. She's an English major at Boise State now, so probably not so well.

I wonder how viable this would be for yours truly. Let's see, it took me probably an average of three hours to come up with each of my articles in October. So that's 15 hours for 13.7k words, or 913 words per hour. That means doing this would take me roughly 54.77 hours. If I write a maximum of four hours per day, that's 13.69 days, or half the month. With an average word length of 4 characters written in a solid block (i.e. there is no dialogue, ever), that also comes out to 73 pages in Word if my use of copy and paste can be trusted.

Of course, since I have nothing in mind for said novel and I tend to obsess about the details, I would never finish. That's no fun. And either way the final product would be awful, though I guess that's an acceptable cost in the NaNoWriMo world. I don't think I'm going to do this, but I'll maybe start it and then stop appropriately shortly thereafter.

2k words? You sir are on a roll!

I'm honestly wishing to try it some of these years, but i'm too wrapped up in anything to give it a shot at the moment.

I'm gonna give you a root!

If I can produce 5k words by Monday (haha) in addition to all the other things I need to do (failing midterms is now officially not one of those things, as I have successfully failed them all), then I will attempt to go for this as well. Then Kenri and I can support each other with Internet high fives.

Day 3: At 3334 words now, which is where I should have been at the end of day 2. Which means I'm actually more behind than I was yesterday. Which sucks. But it's better than not writing anything today, which is what I was tempted to do because headache. So there's that. <_<

And it would be totally awesome if you joined me in this venture, but I honestly wouldn't blame you if you didn't, or started and then went "screw it". It kinda sucks, like I said in the first post. >_>

Day 4: 5255 words. Had a free period today, took my computer to school, banged out ~2000 words. Still plenty of daylight left to hopefully do another ~1600 and put me back on schedule.

If I can then pull off another 2500+ tomorrow, it'll give me a nice little buffer in case I need more time than anticipated to write a term paper this weekend. <_<

As an aspiring author, I don't know what to think about this, because I really shouldn't use a holiday as an excuse to write more. Hm.

Broke 1,000 words. Not having a plot or more than one character is turning out to be less detrimental than I had thought.

And the worst part is, I'm fairly sure I'd have the free time to do this, and I have the feeling (and it doesn't matter if it's terribly inaccurate or not so long as I have that feeling) that if I got on a roll, it wouldn't be that difficult based on your earlier Word count. Which only means it'd be easier to lure me into this.

Well, my word count was based on my own writing, which is completely thoughtless and arbitrary. So I may write faster than people who, you know, take the time to consider what they're saying instead of just vomiting it all out onto the screen.

Anyway, if you and CG7 join in we can have four incomplete novels! That's a sweet 100% increase in activities of questionable merit! As the owner of this website, I am clearly for such things.

Day 4, revisited: Just over 6700 words. Day 4's goal is 6667 words, so this puts me ahead of schedule if only slightly. I'll take it, though. Now I just need to coast by at 1666 words per day, minimum, and I've got this in the bag.

(Until I give up mid-week 2 out of frustration, but yeah.)

Day 5: Goal for today is 8335, or thereabouts. I'm at 8358. Will probably try to knock out another ~500 tonight, if possible, but I'm on schedule as is, so that's nice.

Edit: Incidentally, I sure hope "50,000 words of a novel" still counts, because I haven't even introduced my entire main cast yet. Ugh.

Day 6: Goal for today is roughly 10k. I've got a little over 10,700, which puts me in a nice place even if I am finishing today's writing at 1:30 AM.

Who are you, Stephen King? Throw some random characters in there and be done with it. You know, like Stephen King.

I'm presently stalled at around 2,200 words - not because it's hard to come up with something to write about, since I'm taking the Stephen King approach myself, but because the story I have sort of put together is incredibly boring, to the point where it's hard to write (and, it goes without saying, impossible to read). I don't know, maybe I should add in some giant spiders and tentacle monsters... like Stephen King does.

Day 7: Technically it's like... the morning of day 8, but whatever. I'm at ~13,200. I'm counting this for day 7, but my goal for day 8 is ~13,333. So yeah. Awesome. And I only lost several hours of sleep because of it!

I'd be more disappointed, but I can't say I expected anyone to join in to begin with. <_< So, I consider this a success regardless!

Day 9: 15,470. This, I believe, exceeds my goal for day 9, which should be ~15,000 words. Technically I'm into day 10 but whatever, that's really only going to matter on the last day. (I will be so, so sad if I miss the end of November, 50,000 word goal by 1,666 words. Not surprised, but very sad.)

In regards to plot progress, I've now introduced all the main characters (except the villains and important supporting characters) and am ushering them towards the plot as quickly as they will permit. Which, it turns out, is quite slowly, because they're huge whiners, and I didn't expect this.

I took whining to be a plot device. Many a batch of several hundred words emerged out of whining! It's truly a wonderful tool.
