| Level: 44 DSB Moderator | So I decided to upgrade my RAM today since I recently got Windows 7 and figured it might recognize more than 3 GB of usable memory. Now I have 6 GB, but still only 3.25 GB of usable memory. I looked up this issue and discovered that this problem was with the version of Windows 7 I bought. Apparently they sold me the 32 bit version, which caps out at 3.25 GB of memory, when my receipt says they sold me the 64 bit version. Is manslaughter a justifiable solution to this? --- "In the best relationships, nobody wears the pants." |

| Level: 37 Advanced | No, but yeah, I would be pretty pissed. You could try going back to the store, but that sucks they sold the 32-bit version. ... 32-bit version of W7 shouldn't even exist >.< --- SIEG ZEON, dood! |

| Level: 44 DSB Moderator | Tengu doesn't care about that stuff. But I went to return it and apparently they have a six month return policy that I exceeded by two weeks. I didn't realize I had bought it that long ago. Going to wait until around November when Diablo 3 comes out and I actually need to free up some memory for it. --- "In the best relationships, nobody wears the pants." |

| Level: 49 Liberal Arts Major | 3 gb of RAM should be plenty, I'd imagine. Especially on Windows 7, which is supposed to be less resource intensive then Vista. Also, are you sure it's reading 3.25? Because 32 bit windows OS are supposed to allow 4 gb max. I know what having low RAM is like though. This computer came with Vista Home Premium, an integrated graphics chip (A decent one though, Nvidia GeForce 6600) and it only had 1 gb of RAM >_> (So I only had like 200~ mb of free RAM at any time after Vista (512 min, 256 mb for the Graphics chip) I just recently upgraded it to 3 gb and it's been a dream since. <-> "What the fuck is Alice doing in Wonderland anyway? | Level: 49 Liberal Arts Major | I have 4 GB of RAM, don't play any video games, and still have occasional lag. | Level: 37 Advanced | Huh. didn't know that about Windows 7. Then again, i haven't gotten techy with my PC for a long timeand played it safe. meh. Anyway, it's all about the videocards these days, not necessarily the RAM, but RAM helps when running giant games like World of Warcraft or the Flight Simulator games. the biggest problem though is finding out which videocard works with which game. blizzard these days usually doesn't push the videocard, but with games that require you to have physic engines (Starcraft 2) and advanced lighting/shadowing (Diablo 3 mightbe a huge example). these things can get tricky sometime and it ain't always about the videocard's RAM or speed, but the two things you should focus on a videocard is actually the memory and the GPU by default before finding out if they can support the game. --- "But friends, i ask you. | Level: 49 Liberal Arts Major | You can have the best video card in the world but if your RAM sucks good luck with that. ___ ~ Ogordemir ~ "The sciences have hitherto harmed us little; but some day the piecing together of dissociated knowledge will open up such terrifying vistas of reality that we shall either go mad from the revelation or flee from the light into the peace and safety of a new dark age." ~ H.P Lovecraft, The Call of Cthulhu |

| Level: 37 Advanced | RAM is something you need for overall performance. It's usually not as bad as the Videocard for videogames, but it does help. But if you're choosing the videocard, you gotta choose it carefully. I went for 6 Gigs of RAM for example since i knew i would be playing MMORPGs like World of warcraft alot. As for the videocard, when that eventually goes out, i plan on going for something better than a Radeon 4300 like a 4800 maybe afterwards. I usually prioritize Videocards over RAM since i don't seem to think RAM is hard for anyone to upgrade, honestly. --- "But friends, i ask you. What is a GameCobra? From where does it come? | Level: 37 Advanced | About 2-3 years now. I don't keep track of what goes on with Videocards now because i feel like i got everything i need in a PC >_> EDIT: Funny thing is, upon saying that, i just realized that the 4800 series is 3 years old now XD way to go, GC! http://www.kinetic.net/Radeon/ Meh. not really that worried right about now about videocards anyway. --- "But friends, i ask you.
