Dude was on the wrong side of history re: video games, but I've still got a ton of respect for him as a critic. RIP.

There was very little I actually agreed with him with. (Video games being one)

He was frankly too hard on certain types of movies, like action movies and shit. Generally he would pass it off as worthless to see because you don't "get" anything from it.

On the other hand, if you don't get anything from it, what is there to criticize except for that? "I thought the explosions could have been more explosive"? "Megan Fox should have worn fewer clothes and had no lines whatsoever"? Whether or not you're entertained by action movies etc. depends on factors irrelevant to criticism. You don't go to a Jackie Chan movie for the plot and depth of character development!

Yeah, that's the kind of shit he criticized.

Oh whats that? It's a movie about America blowing up aliens and shit? Oh this could have been so much more, blah blah blah.

IT'S A MOVIE ABOUT BLOWING UP FUCKING ALIENS IF YOU EXPECTED ANYTHING MORE THAN THAT YOU'RE AN IDIOT AND YOU'RE AN IDIOT FOR CRITICIZING IT FOR THAT FACT.

Pretty sure he didn't dislike movies about blowing up aliens, he disliked dumb and bad movies about blowing up aliens. There's a difference.

A good one has good pacing, believable characters, witty dialogue, excellent choreography, and a romantic subplot that is either well-executed or nonexistent.

Lots of movies fail this test. Being in the action genre doesn't excuse that, in fact it makes it more of an issue than otherwise.

Action movies should absolutely NEVER have a romantic subplot. ever

That's true, it should be all one-night stands with interchangeable Barbie/Ken dolls.

Well. It's true. I can't think of ONE movie that had a tolerable love subplot hacked on. Ever hear the term "cringeworthy"? That's what 99% of love subplots are in any film.

I liked Titanic's romantic subplot.

This says more about me than anything else.
