"They Fought. For Our Right. To Paaaaaarty?"
Broken backs and bloody knuckles,
Forgotten fathers and long lost uncles,
Who fought for freedom through piles of lies,
It was for our rights our ancestors died.
War brings profit and profit breeds greed,
For those who died in vain, God speed,
And to those who rewrite the constitution,
Fuck off and die motherfucker,
It's our revolution.
"Domination" by Biohazard
Fourth of July. To the rest of the world, it's just a date. To this country however, it marks our independence. To celebrate the occasion, fireworks are set off, mass amounts off beer is drank, grills are used to cook huge quantities of meat, limbs are blown off from the fireworks that are set off because the mass amounts of beer that get drank.
Once again, I'm sitting here at work during a holiday when I would much rather not be. Actually, almost any day I would rather not be, but the bills must get paid somehow, and I got tired of standing on the street corner all the time. This is one of the worst days to work as well. Not just because of all that gets sold, but because of all the people that come in. Something about this day seems to lower the IQ points of everyone around by 180.
We Hold These Bottle Rockets and Brewskis To Be Self-Evident
"Men, before we go out and engage in battle, I just want to remind you what were fighting for. We're fighting for our freedom, and one day, people will look back on this and celebrate. This celebration will be marked with people blowing things up. It will be marked by people smashing carriages together for fun. It will be marked by people getting drunk, and I'm not talking "normal" drunk. I'm talking "rip-roaring, why is that cow wearing my pants and how come my nipples hurt so damn much and whos this hooker that has an Adams Apple" kind of drunk. So let's go out there and fight to every man's last lungful of air!"
I highly doubt such a thing was ever said before a battle during the Revolutionary War. If it was, then I hope that someone questioned his mental faculties. It does seem odd what is done when it is presented how it really is done, doesnt it? Why isn't it done in a more dignified manner? What does celebrating independence have to do with beer-bong hits? Very little, it would seem to me, but whatever.
I Gotta Take A Wicked Yes
If there's one country that almost everyone loves to bash, its France, especially now because of their refusal to back the US going into Iraq. That is just the most recent thing however. They seem to be the butt of a ton of jokes the world over. People seem to enjoy bashing France the most because they have not been one of the best countries in terms of combat. Okay, forget Napoleon like so many others have and that holds true. However, if it wasn't for France, the US would not have stood a very good chance of overthrowing the power that was Great Britain. This fact is somewhat glossed over today, but its true. Go look it up at your local library, I dare you.
It's been said that if Hitler wasnt stopped during World War II, we would all be speaking German, or if we hadn't stopped the Japanese, then we would all be speaking Japanese. Well, if the French hadn't of stepped in and gave us a huge hand, then we would all be speaking English. Hm...that sounded better in my head. Don't mind my idiocy (you are so fucking stupid; why I put up with it is beyond me). At any rate, while we may not be thrilled with them right now, we still owe a huge thanks to France on this day, because without them, it may not have even happened. Let us not forget the cheese eating, cigarette smoking, wine drinking, no deodorant using surrender monkeys and all they've done for us that one time and very little since.
Such Cute Mortar Explosions
Fireworks...yeah. Just seeing the throngs of people who are incredibly impressed by pretty lights makes me shake my head and think that there is no hope for mankind. It also makes me shake my head because while we are shooting things into the air to watch them explode and be dazzled, there are soldiers out there who are watching thing get shot into the air and praying that it doesn't hit near and kill them. What they are lobbing is intended to hurt, not impress. It just blows what's left of my "mind" that here we are doing this for fun when there are people out there that are having to do similar things for survival. Granted, I know that it is a stretch going from some bottle rockets to actual rockets, but it can be made. To me, it just seems a tad bit disrespectful having basically a staged shell attack while there are men and women out there who are facing real shell attacks. Of course, I'm sure that I am in the extreme minority of people who think that something more reserved might be better.
Bottom Line
Over two hundred years ago, we as a nation fought back against our oppressors for our rights. With a little bit of help, we succeeded, and look at us now. However, somewhere along the way, we seem to have lost sight of that fact and now use the day that commemorates it as nothing more than an excuse to get drunk and have demolition derbys. While those things are all well and good, there are days that I'm sure are better suited for such things. So next year, just take a moment to reflect on what had to happen to we have what we have today. If you still insist on trying to brand yourself with a sparkler, then at least do so with some dignity and remembrance, and have a toast to those who are in the armed forces who are fighting across the globe.
